Bustafellows Otome Review – Romance with a Bit of Danger

Blerdy Tribe, the much anticipated crime noir otome game, BUSTAFELLOWS is here and it is one of the best otome games of 2021! Yes, I am saying that before the Aksys releases later on this year, but BUSTAFELLOWS is the otome game I have been waiting for—developed by Japanese publisher, Nippon Cultural Broadcasting eXtend Inc.(the folks behind Side Kicks!) and localized by PQube, BUSTAFELLOWS is an addictive crime drama that mixes together mystery, intrigue, and steamy romance with not one, but five dangerous men. Dive into the seedy city streets of New Sieg as Teuta, a rookie reporter as she crosses paths with Limbo and his associates, the Fixers a group of not so squeaky clean men who work outside of the law to exact their own sense of justice.

The publisher asked that we not share any story points after chapter one, so this will be a largely spoiler free review—everything I mention is revealed in the Chapter 1—besides, why deny you the chance to uncover the mystery for yourself?!

Confessions of an Otome Gamer: Indie Otome are BETTER than Otome Games

I know, potentially polarizing opinion incoming–don’t @ me.

But, if you’ve been following me for awhile it shouldn’t be such a big shock that I prefer indie otome games over the more “traditional” Japanese otome games. I mean on a very basal level, indie otome games are much more accessible and available than Japanese otome games. Sure, we’ve been getting tons more otome games than we have in the past, but given the volume of otome games being released in Japan annually, what we get through localization is merely a drop in the bucket. Not to mention localization titles are selected and curated by companies that at the end of the day are protecting their bottom line. So the games that do make their way to the West are ones that are considered the most “financially viable” (read: safe).

Shy Cuties Need Love Too: 5 Dandere Otome Guys

If you’re just joining the party, this is the fifth post in my Character Archetype series, where I spotlight five otome LIs from each of the major character archetypes. These posts are a complement to my Beginners Guide to Otome Games posts, particularly the one on Common Character Archetypes in Otome Games. There I give a very general rundown of the most common character archetypes that appear in otome games with a few examples of characters that fit each trope.

I know it’s been about a year since my last archetype post (my bad), last time around I covered one of my favorite character archetypes, Kuudere characters. Which you can check out by clicking the link: ‘A Little Tough Love: 5 Kuudere Otome Guys’. This time around I’m covering the cute and shy dandere character types!

The Basics: What Are Dandere?

Dandere comes from the Japanese word “danmari” (黙だんまり) meaning “silence”, and “deredere” (デレデレ), which means “lovey dovey”.  These characters are quiet and antisocial, and are often described as being emotionless. Dandere characters are often confused with the kuudere character type, as both archetypes describe characters that are perceived as being distant. When pushed a kuudere character has absolutely no problem talking, usually in a very direct manner. On the flip side, dandere characters will go out of their way not to talk and when they do talk, they become extremely flustered and it can be hard to make out what they’re saying.

The big take away from dandere characters is that their aloofness stems from their shyness. They are typically, very slow to open up to people, especially strangers and it can take quite some time for a dandere to warm up to a heroine. Dandere are often described as being gloomy and may have a low self-esteem.
