Coyote Vol. 1 BL Manga Review – ‘Romeo and Juliet’ with a supernatural twist

So, some background on this one— A few months back I decided to gift some manga to one of my oldest IRL friends for her birthday. Like me she is a lover of anime and manga, with a soft spot for boys love media. She’s partial to some of the steamier boys love titles, so I compiled a list which included: two works by Scarlet Beriko The Fourth Generation Head  and Jackass, Rihito Takerai’s Ten Count, and Ranmaru Zariya’s Coyote. She’d already read Ten Count so I took that off the list and rejected Coyote because she found it boring (her words, not mine), so I got her The Fourth Generation Head and Jackass and that should have been the end of it, but I couldn’t for the life of me understand what she didn’t like about Coyote.

“A forbidden romance between a werewolf and a human whose passion conceals a dark secret…”

I mean, a forbidden supernatural romance is right up my alley, so I bought the first two volumes for myself and y’all I WAS HOOKED!

Cherry Magic!: Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?! – Vol. 1 BL Manga Review

I’m not gonna lie, the only reason I picked up Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?! is because it had one of those obnoxiously long light novel-esque titles. It’s absolutely bonkers and I love it—especially the idea that staying a virgin for 30 years would somehow be rewarded with magic powers. I missed out… but, let’s not talk about that right now…

This is my first Yuu Toyota series and a quick look at her Baka Updates profile revealed that she’s penned a hell of a lot of shoujo series and a single seinen series about a single dad raising his daughter alongside his recently divorced friend, that looks like it might have some boys love leanings. But, since I’ve never read that series I had no IDEA what to expect, but based on the premise and the title, I figured this was going to be a fairly lighthearted read.

Therapy Game Vol. 1 – BL Manga Review

I couldn’t help myself. After reading Secret XXX, I was eager to read more works by Meguru Hinohara and lucky for me I had volume 1 of her spin-off series Therapy Game sitting pretty at the top of my TBR pile. I planned on waiting until volume 2 was released to review the series, but September 8th is just a little too far off for my tastes, so I succumbed to the siren call and read the entire volume in one sitting… and I didn’t think it was possible, but Hinohara really outdid herself!

Therapy Game is a spin-off of Meguru Hinohara’s debut boys love manga Secret XXX, this time around the story focuses not on Shohei and Mito, but on their brothers, Shizuma and Minato—both of whom appeared as side characters in the prequel series. Shizuma was relegated to a background role in Secret XXX, but we spent quite a bit of time with Minato, so I was eager to see him stepping into a more prominent role in this series.

Secret XXX – BL Manga Review

Being stuck at home for what is going on five months has been great for my TBR list (my gaming backlog not so much), so I’ve been on a bit of a manga buying spree. Granted almost all of my new buys have been BL manga, but lets chock that up to the boom in legitimate boys love releases and not on my status as a self-proclaimed fujoshi.

During one of my more recent hauls I snagged a copy of Secret XXX by Meguru Hinohara and I’m going to keep it real with you guys, I have never read anything else by this author. In fact, I wasn’t even planning on buying Secret XXX, the manga I actually wanted to buy was volume 1 of her ongoing series, Therapy Game—which I totally bought btw. It was only after I hit the order button that I discovered that Therapy Game is a spin off of Secret XXX, and not wanting to miss out on any details, I placed a second order and I am so glad I did! I wasn’t familiar with Meguru Hinohara’s works before this, so I had no idea what to expect from this one volume story—what I got was a cute story that was equal parts sweet and spicy.

Castle Mango – Boys Love Manga Review

A love hotel, the adult film industry, and a high school aged uke… sounds like the set up for a really sleazy, cliche boys love series. But don’t let the synopsis fool you, Castle Mango written by Narise Konohara and illustrated by Muku Ogura is a surprisingly heartfelt read. A hidden gem in an otherwise sex heavy genre, Castle Mango is a breath of fresh air! 

The series follows Yorozu Shirosaki, a studious high schooler whose family runs the love hotel, Castle Mango, where for a few hours, couples come to let off some steam. Yorozu sometimes helps run the front desk, but otherwise keeps his family’s business a secret from the rest of the world. His “quiet” life is interrupted when an adult film director, Togame, decides to use Castle Mango as the set of their next porno shoot and he is mistaken for one of the “extras” in the film. Embarrassed and ticked off, he vows to give the director a wide berth, but when it seems like Togame has his eyes set on his younger brother, Yorozu devises a plan. So, he tricks a drunk Togame into believing they slept together, in hopes of diverting his attention. Yorozu thought it would be enough to scare Togame off, he never imagined Togame would actually ask him to be his BOYFRIEND?!
