Project: Perfectly Normal BL Game Review

Project: Perfectly Normal is an indie action-comedy boys love visual novel developed by Peaceful Pastel. In the game you play as a retired killer for hire, who is tasked with his toughest mission yet—navigating the ups and downs of a normal life. The game was originally intended to be a part of a one-month game jam, but during development was extended. After the go I’ve been having with boys love games, I am happy to say that Project: Perfectly Normal is just an all around sweet and wholesome game and a welcome reprieve from some of the… ah, questionable(?) boys love games I’ve been playing recently.

My Dangerous Life BL Game Review – F*ckboys in the City

My Dangerous Life is a boys love dating sim, that was originally released by Hituzigumo in 2018 on mobile as He and My Dangerous Life. The game follows a college student named Hinata who travels to New York to fulfill his life-long dream of studying abroad. His dream becomes a nightmare when in the span of one day, he is swindled out of his apartment and a stranger steals his identity to enroll at his university. At a loss for what to do, Hinata is approached by a group of handsome men who offer to help him by giving him a place to stay at their shared apartment…and so begins his dangerous new life in the Big city. The game was panned for it’s subpar translation… among other things, and not wanting to let such a “phenomenal” story go to waste, the powers that be teamed up with Giiku Games to overhaul the localization for a Steam release.

Full disclosure, I bought this game without having read the synopsis or the character bios–I saw the pretty art, the BL tag, and that it was on sale for $9.09 (the perfect alignment for an impulse buyer, such as myself) and I threw my money down. So, I didn’t vet this game before buying and surprise, surprise, this game isn’t exactly “high art”, but there is some enjoyment to be had from a “bad” game and My Dangerous Life is a trainwreck I just can’t help but watch…

First Impressions – NIGHT/SHADE Demo

NIGHT/SHADE (not to be confused with this Nightshade) is an upcoming 18+ cyberpunk BL visual novel developed by indie studio KingAsphy. This is the team’s first project and from what I’ve seen so far it definitely puts me in the mind of some of Nitro+Chiral’s works, particularly DRAMAtical Murder.

Set in 2040 in the fusion city of Sobena, NIGHT/SHADE takes us on a trip into the neon lit underworld of the city; where crime syndicates own the streets and back alley deals and strange murders are the norm. The only way to survive is to either turn a blind eye to the unsavory goings on of the city or become one with the city’s dark underbelly.

KingAsphy launched a Kickstarter campaign for the game and there are just a handful of days left to fund the campaign and they are soooo close to reaching their goal! There is a short demo available, so I decided to give it a look see and if it’s worth throwing my money at (spoiler alert: totally worth it).

Togainu no Chi~Lost Blood~ BL Game Review – Finding Love in a Hopeless Place

Say what you will about Nitro+Chiral and their games, but beneath all the angst, leather, and dubious consent are some pretty introspective stories. Sure, their games tend to be on the darker and edgier side of things, taking readers to some less than savory places, but when it really gets down to it there is always an underlying message that serves as the lifeblood of their stories. In Sweet Pool the story explores the inevitability of fate and the difference between being pulled along by forces beyond your control or embracing your lot in life. While Dramatical Murder takes a few notes from Freud in its exploration of the human psyche…among other things… So, going into Togainu no Chi I was prepared for a dark, yet thought provoking story… and let’s see if it lived up to expectations.

Hashihime of the Old Book Town BL Game Review – A Never Ending Trip into the Bizarre

Hashihime of the Old Book Town is a psychedelic murder mystery boys love visual novel developed by ADELTA and published by MangaGamer. I’ve seen other reviewers throw around the phrase “existential horror” when discussing this game and after finishing Hashihime of the Old Book Town I agree that is a pretty fucking accurate description of this game.

Time plays a huge role in the plot of Hashihime of the Old Book Town, with the schtick being Tamamori using his time traveling ability to jump between several timelines each with wildly different outcomes. However, unlike your typical visual novel, where the player makes several in game choices that guide the course of the story—Hashihime of the Old Book Town is surprisingly linear. The game consists of five routes, each comprising of one chapter of the overall narrative—following a very strict story progression. After completing each chapter you are presented with a single new choice that “gently nudges” you onto a new path.

Hashihime of the Old Book Town - Fantasy

There are quite a few twists and turns throughout the game and while you don’t actually make any choices, it damn sure feels like it. From the moment you enter the game it’s a nonstop rollercoaster that takes you further and further from reality with each new revelation. Each route builds on the last, uncovering just a bit more of the mystery until the big reveal in the final chapter—and trust me, you want to finish this game.
