Diverse Games to Keep an Eye Out for in 2022

Hey there Blerdy Tribe, it’s a brand new year and there have been some huge strides within the gaming community. Indie games are becoming more prominent, with more mainstream sites covering them much more frequently than they have in the past. But, for me the most exciting is the shift towards more visibility for traditionally underrepresented groups in games! Don’t get me wrong, there is still a ways to go, but, I’m happy to see that there has been an effort to create more representative games and a lot of that has to do with a diverse creators stepping in to create games that reflect their own experiences, identities, and cultures.

As a Black gamer I am always on the look out for diverse games, so once again I did a call for games with planned 2022 release dates that feature characters and stories centered around often underrepresented groups–and as always the community provided!

Thank you to everyone who sent me their projects or shared the tweet–you guys are the real MVPs! So, I spent some time shifting through all the responses and checking out game pages for this post and y’all I am excited for all of these games! If you’re like me and you’ve been craving more diversity in your games, this is the list for YOU!

Indie Girls Love Games You Should Be Playing

Hey Hey, Blerdy Tribe! If there was a genre of games that I’m not as well versed in it would have to be Yuri/Girls’ Love. I’ve just never been especially drawn to the genre and growing up in a more traditional Southern Baptist household didn’t lend itself to exploring more niche genres—I’m a grown adult living on my own and my mom still isn’t “aware” of my love of BL media, which is a wonder seeing as it’s all over my Insta account.

It’s only been in recent years that I’ve started to seek out more GL series, particularly games and I’ve had the opportunity to play some really good ones! So I’ve compiled a list of some of the indie otome games I think you should add to your gaming library!

Indie Boys Love Games You Should Be Playing

Hey Blerdy Tribe, if you’ve been following me for awhile you are well aware that I am a lover of boys love media for everyone else… surprise, I’m a proud fujoshi! I won’t bore you here with the details of my hilarious introduction to the boys love genre, but if you’re curious definitely check out one of my earliest posts, Wait, Are those Guys Kissing for all the deets!

But, long story short, I enjoy most things BL from manga to anime, fanfics and yes, even games—and because this is a game review site I figured why not take a look at some of my fave indie BL games! Yes, indie. If I did a list of my fave Japanese BL games, it would just be a list full of Nitro+Chiral games and while I love them, that just seems a bit one-sided and variety is the spice of life, don’t ya think? And trust me there are tons of great titles out there to delight even the most seasoned fujoshi and fudanshi! It can be a bit daunting, so today I’m narrowing down the list to include a handful of my absolute favorite indie boys love games!

5 Free Indie Otome Games You Should Be Playing

I don’t know about you dear readers, but hobbies can be pretty expensive! I can’t even begin to tell you how much I spent on manga just last month alone, but even that pales in comparison to the amount of games I buy each month. Most indie games are pretty cheap, anywhere from two bucks to $25, and some of the more mainstream releases can sometime take you back $40 or more and that can add up! Not everyone has the disposable income to buy every new game that comes out, and no that doesn’t mean I condone piracy, because NO

But, rather than pirating a game, there are some free indie game options that are just as good if not more so than the bigger budget games on the market—and who doesn’t like saving a bit of cash and getting a quality game? So, whether you’re an avid gamer or someone who plays only a handful of games a year, here are some free games that’ll be a welcome addition to your gaming library.

While these games are free, throwing the devs a few bucks in tips is always appreciated~
