Hey Hey Blerdy Tribe, I have some amazing joseimuke news hot off the presses!! Moonchime Studios is pleased to announce a collaboration with the Japanese publisher Poni-Pachet to bring their latest project to English-speaking audiences, this project is Haunted Obachestra!
Poni-Pachet will publish the game and Moonchime Studios will localize it and be directly involved in the Kickstarter campaign management and other publishing efforts. Our friends at Poni-Pachet hope that this will help them connect with the community outside of Japan.
Haunted Obachestra is a fully-voiced joseimuke adventure for everyone, and will be made available for PC. The focus is on creating an immersive experience for the players by centering them in the story as the human protagonist, with options to select a gender and change the name. Music is a pivotal aspect of this multimedia project, and each song is crafted to reflect the characters and enhance the story.
There is even more news for the joseimuke community! Yesterday, Japanese publisher, Primula (the team behind the much beloved, Taisho x Alice series) launched the official site for their upcoming title, “Qualia/Δ” for PC. While there has been no official localization announcement, the site launched with tentative English and Simplified Chinese support. So far, what we know is that this is not an otome game, but a romance title focusing on three main protagonists.
Release Date: TBA
Languages: Japanese (English and Simplified Chinese tentative support)
Exciting news! Newly established company Medium announced that they’ll be releasing the joseimuke adventure game, Chronicles of Refugia episodically on Steam in 2022! The game is set in Hourei Island in the aftermath of a world ending event, and after years of conflict most of the surface is uninhabitable–forcing most of humanity into secure shelters. At release, Chronicles of Refugia will be available in both Japanese and English, with Molly Lee serving as Localization Producer on the project (so you know this’ll be a fun read). Details are still coming in on the game, but here’s what we know so far from the official Twitter and website!
So, apparently there has been some discourse in the otome games community—I mean, when is there not drama—concerning using the term “otome” for more inclusive titles. There have been some folks in the fandom who are upset that folks are using otome as a catch all term for any game that fits the otome mold, ie. a protagonist who romances pursuable characters. Some, use otome to encompass idol and card-raising mobile games, like A3!, and more recently Tears of Themis. While others feel that LGBT+ indie games to be otome.
This is not the first time this issue has cropped up over the years and it most definitely won’t be the last, but I think this new wave of discourse is just disheartening. Times have changed, games are becoming more inclusive and more people are seeing media that speaks to them and their truth, so it only makes since that the language we use should grow and change with the media. So, today I’m going to talk about what makes an otome an otome and where I stand on including LGBT+ games within that otome umbrella.
