Exciting news! Newly established company Medium announced that they’ll be releasing the joseimuke adventure game, Chronicles of Refugia episodically on Steam in 2022! The game is set in Hourei Island in the aftermath of a world ending event, and after years of conflict most of the surface is uninhabitable–forcing most of humanity into secure shelters. At release, Chronicles of Refugia will be available in both Japanese and English, with Molly Lee serving as Localization Producer on the project (so you know this’ll be a fun read). Details are still coming in on the game, but here’s what we know so far from the official Twitter and website!
In the year 23XX, the world as we know it has come to an end. Global warming has caused the sea levels to rise, submerging coastal cities in every nation—a mass extinction event that forever changed life on what remains of the surface.
This extreme climate change sparked violent conflicts in which android soldiers and drone strikes destroyed even more of the land. Now that the last dregs of humanity live within the confines of designated shelters, for the first time, they are forced to accept outsiders in order to secure their own safety.
You see, not everyone who looks normal on the outside is human on the inside. And while the rest of the world sleeps, these non-humans are slowly taking over…Official Site
Chronicles of Refugia follows the stories of three very different Alices, each with their own unique personalities and motivations. While there are three “main characters” on release the story will focus on the Alice plotline.
The Iron Willed Proprietress
Owner of the Wonderland Casino Club. Over the past 10 years, she developed Hourei Island into a thriving place. Unfortunately due to her harsh personality, the residents of the island see her as a tyrant and generally give her a wide berth.
The Rare Ordinary Human
A man of unremarkable looks. He originally worked as a doctor at a clinic located on an archipelago hundreds of miles away. He is rather pessimistic and generally avoids conflict.
The Unsinkable Ball of Sunshine
Hails from Tokyo. Rumor has it she used to be a small-time pop star. This peppy social butterfly visits the island during summer break.
Team Behind Chronicles of Refugia
There is an all star team behind Chronicles of Refugia including artist Kazuki Yone (Hakuoki and Kagami no Aosbi), story direction by Kano Takako (Diabolik Lovers More, Blood and Ken ga Kimi), scenarios by Ninomae Nikai (Norn9 Norn+Nornette Last Era), and the English localization will be handled by Molly Lee (@verdelishJP)–who worked on the translations for Taisho x Alice and Sweet Pool.
The soundtrack is being produced by ZIZZ Studio and the opening theme, “Refugia” is performed by Kanako Ito and Stella Lee Jones!
While it’s still early and we’re still getting new details, I am super excited to see what Chronicles of Refugia has in store for us! The art is absolutely gorgeous and with such a phenomenal team I know that the final release is going to be amazing!
