It’s wild to think that I have been running this site for 10 years… a decade just feels like a long time to be doing anything. When I started this site I was in my 20s, struggling through grad school and had no expectations that my ramblings on the internet would become “Blerdy Otome“. I started this site as a way to procrastinate on a research project and now it’s kinda snowballed into something bigger than I ever could have imagined. It started with a dumb Pokémon reference and now I’m a go to source for a lot of folks for game news and reviews…
Your very own Pokémon legend is about to unfold! A world of dreams and adventures with Pokémon awaits! Let’s go!
I have been meaning to do something with this blog for awhile now, but could never find the energy time to do anything about it. To be honest there won’t really be any rhyme or reason to this, I’m just going to post what I like when I like. Most posts will be about otome games,…
Blerdy Otome (or Nice Job Breaking It Hero, as it was called back then) was something I just did between homework and classes and everyday life. I played games that interested me, covered shows, books, movies, random thoughts… there wasn’t a rhyme or reason to most of the stuff I covered other than I liked it. Now, I have partnerships with publishers, do collaborations with other creators, have developers email me to cover their titles. I’ve even branched out from just writing reviews to streaming on Twitch and making video content on YouTube.
Not gonna lie, it’s a smidge overwhelming at times, but I honestly wouldn’t change this journey for anything. It’s been hard and there were parts that were discouraging, but there have been so many more positives that make everything so worthwhile. I’ve met so many great friends, had some crazy opportunities, and played some really amazing games. I’ve grown so much as a person and a creator and I’m still learning and growing.

In the lead up to the 10th Anniversary of the site, I went back and looked at some of my older content and it’s wild to think of how far I have come since those early posts. Some of them are downright cringey. But, I keep them up as a reminder of how much I’ve grown as a writer and creator over the years. So, I thought it would be fun to go back through the years and pick out some of my favorite posts from each year and share my thoughts on them…

Dramatical Murder First Impressions
DRAMAtical Murder is a 2012 Nitro+chiral BL game (same folks who made the delightful Sweet Pool among others…). The game takes place in the not too distant future and follows protagonist, Aoba, a blue haired junk shop worker with beautiful long blue hair. He lives with his grandmother…

This was my first ever review on this site! Yup, my first review was for a BL game, not an otome. Dramatical Murder was my first ever BL game and considering the other Nitro+ titles… this was a pretty tame start. I originally started documenting my playthrough over on Tumblr through some pretty cringey live blogging. You can actually still find the whole thing over there…
Hit me right in the Childhood: An Ode to Pokemon
So recently I’ve been having a strong bout of childhood nostalgia. Maybe it has something to do with my graduation date looming menacingly on the horizon or maybe it’s my inner adult trying desperately to win against my dogged reluctance to admit I am an adult (if that…

The Pokémon series are my first ever video games and I have a lot of nostalgia for the series. But, despite being from the Gen 1 generation, my first Pokémon game was Crystal. I still have fond memories of staying up late with my electric purple GBC hunting Pokémon late into the night with the help of my trusty light attachment…

Wait, Are those Guys Kissing?!: My Yaoi Journey- Part I
So, there’s something that I have been meaning to get off of my chest for awhile now and it is important that I say it now. …I…like…y…i…. Ah, there I said it, I feel so mu-, oh, you didn’t quite catch that? I’m sorry, let me say that again…

I have always been and will always be a proud fujoshi. In fact I was well into the BL fandom even before I ever knew what an otome game was… This was a fun personal post about my intro to BL media and the series that made up my early experiences. (and no, I never did write that part 2 lol)
So You Wanna Chat with Hot Guys? There’s an App for That: Mystic Messenger First Impressions Review
Mystic Messenger is a free to play real time mobile game from Cheritz, the company behind PC otome games Dandelion- Wishes brought to you and Nameless- The one thing you must recall. In the game while looking for a new game in the app store, the MC (you) accidentally download a strange…

Mystic Messenger, the game that had all of us sleep deprived over a 2 minute phone call with a fictional 2D man… I was so sleep deprived playing this game that I vaguely remember anything about those chats. But, I did walk out on a date to make one of the chat sessions with Zen–and I am not ashamed to admit that.

I Date Hot Guys on My iPad: A Love Affair with Virtual Bishies
This post has been a work in progress for over a year, but I could never quite work out how write it out, until the other day when I went to play a game in my backlog and I actually groaned… can you believe that?! Lately, I’ve been so…

I was hitting otome burnout hard when I wrote this, so I wanted to do something to remind me why I loved the genre. My first otome games were f2p mobile games and Voltage pay per route stories and even now I still have a lot of love for those cringey early otome. Sometimes it’s nice to remember where it all started.
[OWLS Blog Tour] It Just Is: Relationships Don’t Always Need Labels
Hey hey all you Heroes and Travelers out there today I’m bringing you all another super special awesome OWLS post!! If this is your first time here at Nice Job Breaking It Hero, you were probably linked here by the lovely Arria’s blog tour post… and I welcome you with…

I LOVE BANANA FISH!! I read this series during my freshman year at Howard and y’all it had me BAWLING by the end! To this day, BANANA FISH is still one of my favorite series. When I wrote this I was apart of a blogging group called OWLS that came up with monthly blogging themes and you picked a series that you felt applied to it. So, of course I had to write about my fave couple, Eiji and Ash…

A Beginners Guide to Otome Games: Part 1 “What Are Otome Games?!”
Hey there newbie! Welcome to the amazing world of Otome Games! It can be a bit daunting starting out, what with all the terms and references out there. So, I’m here to help with this handy dandy, Beginners Guide to Otome! So, you might be wondering, “What makes…

Gah, this feels like a lifetime ago… Starting a new fandom can be overwhelming, there are so many terms and tropes to keep track of, so I created this to help new otome gamers out as they take their first steps into the fandom. I have gone back and updated it a few time to keep up with new trends and things and plan to do that far into the future too.
How To Woo an Otome Guy in Five Easy Steps!
Contrary to what some of you may believe playing otome games is hard work. Wooing 2D hotties is no easy feat, in some cases it’s harder than actually going out and getting a real lover… go figure. There’s a trick to it that can only be mastered through…

Okay, this was a dumb funny post I came up with after playing an otome and belatedly realizing that otome games were making us into yandere! I had a lot of fun writing this and honestly, I plan on making it into a video one of these days…

Sweet Pool – BL Game Review
Sweet Pool is the third Nitro+Chiral title and by far one of the more surreal titles from their lineup, which really isn’t saying much seeing as this is the same company that gave us Saya no Uta (under their Nitroplus branch) and Togainu no Chi. There is a degree of grotesque body…

Sweet Pool is a game that I will never forget. I came for the booty meat monster babies, and stayed for the introspective story and heartbreaking conclusions. No notes, just vibes.
[Melanin Monday] Diversity in Otome Games
Hey Hey Heroes, Travelers, and NPCs, out there it’s Monday, and that means another Melanin Monday post!! I know its been awhile since my last Melanin Monday post (I’ve been slacking off), but, for those of you just joining the party, here’s a little refresher. Melanin Monday is…

Melanin Monday is a bi-weekly post series that I started for Black History Month, where I talk about Black and Brown skinned characters in anime, manga, video games, etc. So, of course I wrote a post about diversity in otome games and how that extends beyond just having people of color in these games. We need more rep!

5 Reasons You Should Give Indie Games A Try
In recent years indie games have started to surpass their mainstream counterparts, in popularity. Once a niche genre only talked about among small circles on the internet, indie games are now regular features on most popular gaming outlets, with some even dedicating whole segments to spotlighting the rising stars of…

I have been playing indie games for just as long (if not longer) than I’ve played mainstream games. There is a level of accessibility and immersion that I don’t always get from bigger titles. So, I wanted to give the five reasons I think everyone should play more indies!
5 Games That Have Had The Biggest Impact On My Life (So Far…)
A little while ago Lizzo from Soulcial Dreamers included me in one of those Twitter tags that are always making the rounds. I usually ignore most of these, because the Twitter notifications for these can get into the triple digits… and they’re a pain to clear out. But,…

This started as a prompt from a fellow content creator from Twitter. It was so much fun thinking back on the games that impacted my love of gaming and how different they are from each other. I kinda want to do a replay of some of these to relive some of the nostalgia.

Voices of the Community – Game Devs on LGBTQ+ Representation in Games
Hey Blerdy Tribe! It’s Pride Month and that means every site and major company is decked out in all their rainbow colored branding and for one short month the LGBTQ+ community is on the front page of everyone’s newsfeed. It’s a time of celebration for how far the…

This was so much fun to do! I do a lot of talking and sharing my thoughts here on Blerdy Otome, so it’s rare to get insight from someone else. While, I could have done another list for Pride Month I thought it would be more impactful to hear from actual developers. Collaborating with so many amazing game developers to get their thoughts on LGBTQ+ representation in games. They gave some great insights into their personal and professional experiences creating the games they want to see in the world.
Is This Otome? – Inclusivity in the Otome Games Fandom
So, apparently there has been some discourse in the otome games community—I mean, when is there not drama—concerning using the term “otome” for more inclusive titles. There have been some folks in the fandom who are upset that folks are using otome as a catch all term for any…

There always seems to be discourse in the otome community, but one topic that seems to ALWAYS come around is “inclusivity in otome”. It’s actually funny that I wrote this 4 years ago and it is STILL relevant… we need to do better.

Throwbacks to Bring Back: Old Games I’d Love to See Get a Re-Release
During one of my streams I got to talking about some of my fave “older” games–as I am want to do from time to time. While reminiscing about the good old days I realized that a lot of great games are tethered to outdated consoles and thus inaccessible…

There is always hope for oldies getting a remaster and so far from this list we have Apollo Justice and Ghost Trick… I need someone to swing around and give us a remaster of Time Hollow, because that game is too good to be locked to the DS!
Women and Femme Identifying Indie Devs You Should Know About
Hey there Blerdy Tribe! Today is International Women’s Day, the day when we spotlight the achievements of women and femme identifying individuals past and present. I’m sure many of you are or know some phenomenal and inspiring creators who are out there everyday shining their light on the…

Celebrating the amazing women and femme game devs in the indie space! Each of these creators have made some great games that you definitely need to add to your to play list! And they are all around awesome human beings!

2022 Otome Localization Survey Results
2022 has been a fantastic year for Western otome fans! We were literally swimming in otome localization releases and announcements and for the first time in forever, I had a hard time keeping up! Voltage Inc surprised us all with their first Switch exclusive otome title, Even If…

This was such a HUGE undertaking and I’m still surprised that I managed to pull this off by myself. Which is probably why I didn’t do one last year, because the setup was insane. But, it did provide some unique insight into what the community liked and didn’t like from the otome releases that year.
Skip or Play: Is Charade Maniacs Worth Buying?
The Western otome fandom is currently in the middle of an otome boom! Since February, we’ve seen at least one otome game release a month. Now otome lovers are finding their backlogs filled to the brim with a variety of new game… June has been especially tough, with…

So, I wanted to try something new since I tend to get games early for review purposes. Kind of a way to give my first impressions of a game before the in depth review. It’s fun to see how my thoughts on a game change over time, and I’d love to do more posts like this. Unfortunately, I am a terrible procrastinator, so I usually wind up barely finishing a game in time for the release.

Romance Visual Novels with Black Heroines
Happy Monday and Happy New Year! Let’s kick off 2024 with some melanin friendly games! As a Black woman and a gamer, I love seeing characters that look like me in the games I play. But, a lot of the time, finding representation in games can be a…

We need more Black heroines in visual novels and otome games! As a Black woman and gamer I want to see myself represented in the games that I love!
Unhinged Yandere Romance Visual Novel Recommendations
Some of y’all like a little spice with your romance and I can respect that. Yandere characters tend to elicit a different kind of doki dokis compared to most potential partners. (Terror… it’s called terror.) And while their methods may be questionable, there is no devotion like the…

I was an unapologetic yandere hater, but over time I played more yan games and I’ve since changed my tune. Would I want one in real life? No. But, in a video game, I guess I see the appeal. Unwavering love and support and they’ll take out your enemies… what’s not to love?!
10 Years of Blerdy Otome and Beyond
10 years of this site is crazy to think about, since it was only meant to be a short term thing I did to procrastinate on my research project. I fully expected to give this up after a few weeks, but here I am 10 years later and it’s still going… Will I still be running this site in 10 years? I don’t know. Life is funny that way. Maybe I will, maybe I won’t. But, one thing I do know for sure is that I don’t regret starting this site. It has been a constant in my ever changing life.
I’ve made great friends. I’ve made enemies (I’m exaggerating… kinda). I’ve made people laugh. I’ve pissed off quite a few people. I’ve had insane opportunities. I’ve missed out on opportunities. I’ve felt insecure. I’ve felt empowered. There have been so many highs and lows.
Honestly, starting this site has been the best and worst thing I have ever done, because it has forced me to grow and sometimes that isn’t an easy thing to do, but it’s kind of a part of the experience. So, whether there will be another 10 years or I end things tomorrow–thank you for being on this awesome journey with me!

CHEERS TO TEN MORE YEARS! Congratulations and thanks for being a staple in the Otome community 🙂
AW THANK YOU FAM!!! 💜Still insane to think this site has been around for a decade lol
AND THE TIME HAS FLOWN 🫨
All the work you’ve put into this space is incredible, truly. You represent the best of us, and I’m so happy to still be in (loose) contact with you through to this day. From Tsukishima Kei and OWLS to all things otome—and everything in between—I’m thankful for every chance we’ve had to laugh and cry together! Congrats on 10 years, and onwards to many more! 🥹
Wow~ Congrats, Naja! It’s been so fun watching your content & chatting with the tribe! I discovered games through your videos and reviews! Also, learning the lore about your experiences (mochi, coffee / barista, teas, your grandpa’s scary painting, and the hen / chicken 🐓 emote on Twitch, etc) has been very entertaining! Listening to you talk about your fanfic favorites and chatting with you + the tribe about Kpop Demon Hunters has been exciting, too! 😂
10 years is impressive! 🙌🏻
Have a great week! I will catch up with your content when I can! 😆
I’ve only been around for the last couple of years but it’s been a blast! I am glad to be around such a great community, and seeing all your successes. Otome and BL games is thirsty work lol. May you have 10 more years of fun and looking forward to see what the future brings you. 🤩
Congrats on 10 years!!!
Congratulations on 10 years, and love to see how the blog has grown!!!
Congratulations on your 10 year anniversary!! It’s thanks to your series of different male archetypes (like my fav tsunderes) that I was able to get into otome as much as I did. I’d honestly love to see an updated version 😂
But I hope you know that you’re such a blessing to the community and I appreciate your criticality and coverage on representation and indie games.
Can’t wait to see what else you have in store – here’s to the next 10 🎉
You are my go to for reviews on new otome! Being on a tighter budget lately means I can’t afford nearly as much as I did so it helps. And the pokemon reference! So nostalgic. I’m a Gen 1 myself but my heart is in Johto.
Congrats on blogging for a full decade! I hope everything is well with you!
A little belated on my end, but congrats on 10 years blogging!! Wishing you continued success!!
Let’s hope you can aim for 11 years. You got awesome talent!
