Collar x Malice Otome Review – How Do You Define Justice?

These last few years have been pretty good to otome games fans, with tons of new English language releases of Japanese otome titles and two upcoming otome anime adaptations. One of the games that has been getting the most attention lately is Idea Factory’s mystery/detective visual novel, Collar x Malice. Within the span of a month fans were treated to an upcoming anime announcement and at Anime Expo 2019, Aksys Games announced that they would be releasing both Collar x Malice and it’s new fandisk, Collar x Malice: Unlimited for the Nintendo Switch in 2020. So, after dragging my feet for two years, I finally carved out some time for the game and I am kicking myself for waiting so long to jump on the Collar x Malice hype train. This is by far my favorite localization release to date!

Collar x Malice was published in Japan by Idea Factory under their Otomate brand of games in 2016 and release exclusively for the PS Vita handheld. In 2017 Aksys Games released an English language edition of the game. 2017 was a huge year for western otome games fans, with a ton of great titles making their way stateside, but of all of them Collar x Malice stood out the most for me. The game follows a rookie police officer, Ichika Hoshino living in Shinjuku. The city is currently under a mass quarantine after the terrorist organization, Adonis commits a series of violent crimes known collectively as the X-Day Incidents. One night while on patrol, Ichika is kidnapped and fitted with a collar set to dispense a lethal dose of poison into her neck. A voice from the collar instructs her to investigate the X-Day Incidents and uncover the “truth” behind Adonis and their plans for Shinjuku. With her life and the fate of the city on the line, Ichika must rely on the help of five strangers, each with their own reasons for wanting to solve the X-Day cases. Together, they might be able to remove Ichika’s collar and liberate Shinjuku from Adonis’s grip.

First Thoughts-Norn9: Var Commons

Before I start this review I have a confession to make, I didn’t buy this game when it first came out… I actually waited until it went on sale during one of PSN’s Flash Sales, so I don’t have any buyers remorse like some folks do. In fact I think I came out like a bandit with this game, because to be honest, Norn9 is worth exactly what I paid for it (and let’s remember that I paid $35 for Alice in the Heart)!

I try to remain neutral when starting a new game, that way I can be as unbiased as possible in my reviews. However, with Norn9: Var Commons that was easier said than done… Since it’s release in the West, Norn9 has been met with some pretty mixed reviews.  On one side of the spectrum are the positive reviews which praise Norn9 for it’s unique plot and interesting characters. Then there are the negative reviews, that point out the various inconsistencies between routes and the gratuitous liberties Aksys took with the translation from Japanese to English. So, I didn’t know what to expect when we in That Game Club decided to pick up Norn9 as our next group gaming experience.

*Disclaimer: All images and screenshots from Norn9 used in this review belong to Idea Factory and Otomate. Please if you are interested in the game, purchase a copy from your local game shop,  Aksys, Amazon.com,  or the PSN Store!*

[News] Upcoming Games from MangaGamer and Aksys

Okay, first I want to apologize for being late with this post! I am currently out of town for the holiday weekend and there is no wifi where I’m at… so I am literally reliving my childhood. It also seems like every time there is a big announcement in the otome community,  I’m away on vacation or something…

Mind you all, I’m still on vacation…I am literally writing this from my Galaxy S7. So forgive me for a few errors/weirdness, as it is hard to post from this thing and I avoid it when I can!

Toma…Toma, Toma, Toma…sigh…Toma…I know I said this before, but I really have mixed feelings about childhood friend routes. Some are amazingly sweet, especially when executed well, while others…not so much. I don’t really like childhood friend stories at the best of times and from what I’d seen of Toma in Shin’s route, let’s just say that I was not overly thrilled to play his route. I didn’t need to get the end of Shin’s route to suspect that beneath his big brother act was a seriously twisted and messed up individual. The first indication that this route was different from the previous three was the addition of the Doubt indicator on the Parameters screen. The second indication was the fact that his Suspicion indicator is maxed out from the beginning. None of the other guys started at 100% Suspiscion, not even Shin, and he was accused of pushing the MC off a cliff. And even then I had to work for it! So then, I began wondering: What makes Toma so special? Why is his route so different? Well I’m afraid the answer is simple…he’s batshit crazy psycho insane in love with the MC.

*Side Note: I will not have an MC/Heroine section in this review…I feel that there just isn’t enough about her to fill an entire section in this game. I was actually really disappointed by the MC in this game.

So my Spring Break was not wasted…I finished Kent’s route…and let me tell you, I am so glad I didn’t play him first…he would have spoiled the rest of the game for me. I love, love, LOVED Kent! He is by far the best route of the game so far, I was so surprised by how much I liked this adorkable math whiz! There wasn’t really a “mystery” in this route…instead a good deal of the focus is put on the relationship between Kent and the MC, this is probably why I liked it so much. There was no over the top drama or conflict, which was refreshing given the plots in some of the other routes. I got the Normal Ending on the first try, as I did with the other routes in this game and then I got the Good Ending…and then I stopped…I couldn’t bare to get any of the Bad Endings…but then I came to my senses and for the sake of you guys and this review I went back and played for them… *mutters darkly* The things I do for reviews… Aside from that bit of torture, Kent’s route was amazing from start to finish!

*Side Note: I will not have an MC/Heroine section in this review…I feel that there just isn’t enough about her to fill an entire section in this game. I was actually really disappointed by the MC in this game.

Of all the routes available in this game, Ikki’s is probably the one that I was least looking forward to. I really don’t like the flirty, playboy types at all, I go out of my way to avoid them when I can. It was actually due to a mistake that I clicked Ikki’s route in the first place, I mixed up his route and Toma’s…not that I was looking forward to Toma’s route any more so than Ikki’s. He’s the typical playboy, good looking and always surrounded by women, but for some reason he’s dating a normal (mute) girl like the MC. So, the route itself, I want to say that despite my reservations his route managed to surprise me, but I’d be lying. While I didn’t outright hate Ikki’s route, I didn’t really enjoy it either, he’s just not my type.

As I did with Shin’s route, I did not get the Good Ending on the first try, I got one of the Bad endings, but weirdly enough I liked Ikki way more in that ending than I had in the entire game.

*Side Note: I will not have an MC/Heroine section in this review…I feel that there just isn’t enough about her to fill an entire section in this game. I was actually really disappointed by the MC in this game.
