The release of Lover Pretend is right around the corner and if you’re looking for a cute, lighthearted otome game, you are definitely going to want to give this a go! Aspiring scriptwriter, Chiyuki dreams of breaking into the industry and one day finding her father. When she lands a job as an assistant on the set of a major film she takes one step closer to realizing her personal and career aspirations. As she searches for information about her father a twist of fate has her crossing paths with four men who may have the answers she need. And through a twist of fate she finds herself entangled in a pretend relationship with one of them?! This is a pretend love role, not true love. Can Chiyuki create a script about fake lovers, while not knowing anything about falling in love herself?

Lover Pretend is set to release on December 1, 2022. But, if you’re still on the fence about picking up the latest Aksys Games otome localization, I have five reasons I think you should totally play Lover Pretend!

Fake it till you make it, in a romance that begins with a lie

Forget meet cutes and sweet serenades, in Lover Pretend the greatest love affair starts with a teeny, tiny white lie. In each route small misunderstandings lead Chiyuki and her chosen boy to pretend to be lovers. But, even a pretend relationship takes work, so they’ll have to fake till they make it as they navigate the ups and downs of their pretend romance, their careers, and just everyday life.

Whether they’re pretending to be lovers to avoid a scandal or just to gain a bit of romantic experience, they’ll have to keep on their toes if they’re gonna keep up the charade. And, maybe along the way that pretend love will blossom into something real!

Hone your acting skills in the Pretend Time Mini-Game

Every otome game nowadays has a “gimmick” and in Lover Pretend you can hone your acting skills by completing missions in “Pretend Time”. Answer a series of timed questions and prove that your fake relationship is legit in this interrogation styled mini-game. Correct answers clear away puzzle pieces obscuring the screen, while incorrect answers will cover it up. If you successfully complete your mission the story progresses, but failure can often lead to Bad Endings, so be sure to have your wits about you.

Pretend Time is a lot of fun, definitely giving the Ace Attorney Psyche Lock vibes and I am always down for more interactive gameplay in my otome.

Fall in love with these colorful Love Interests

It’s all about the love interests in otome games, and Lover Pretend has some of my favorites! A hair and makeup artist, a talented young actor, the son of a popular director, and a gorgeous model—there is plenty of eye candy in this game. While most of guys are used to living in the spotlight, everyone is surprisingly down to Earth and I love that all the LIs feel like dudes you’d meet IRL. It gives Lover Pretend a chill homey vibe that has been missing in some of the more recent otome releases.

Also, this is another otome game that lets the guys actually interact with one another, Riku and Yukito have a really cute love/hate bromance and Kazuma is the group hype man, always down to cheer everyone up. There are also a lot of scenes with everyone together hanging out and those were some of my favorite parts of the game.

Chiyuki is a really genuine heroine

For better or worse otome heroines are meant to be relatable, and Lover Pretend‘s Chiyuki is definitely a leading lady gamers are gonna love. She’s a hard working third year college student taking her first steps towards her dream of becoming a professional scriptwriter. Chiyuki juggles multiple part-time jobs, school work, and an internship all in the name of reaching her goals. The undergrad hustle is real and Chiyuki navigates the ups and downs of her life with grace and a bit of sass. Don’t be fooled by her sweet innocent appearance, Chiyuki is the Queen of Clapbacks.

The girl is not afraid to call the love interests out when they step out of line. Whether she’s dodging Yukito’s flirtatious advances, reigning in her besting Kazuma, or telling off a famous director, Chiyuki can hold her own. Because of her family situation she is used to handling things on her own, so she’s one of the more independent heroines.

Chill Vibes and Romance Only

Not gonna lie, there are a lot of intense otome games out there and don’t get me wrong I love me an angsty drama filled story, but every so often I need something chill to balance things out. Lover Pretend is the fluff filled slice-of-life otome game we’ve been waiting for! Chill vibes and lighthearted romance only. For a game that takes place in and around the entertainment industry, Lover Pretend is surprisingly low-key. There isn’t any doom and gloom, no out there world ending conflicts, just regular (slightly famous) folks living their lives.

Even in Riku and Yukito’s routes where Chiyuki is thrust into the spotlight and their fame leads to issues, the focus is always on the characters and their relationships. There’s a teeny bit of drama in some of the routes, but for the most part it’s kept to a minimum or grounded in reality. So if you’re for looking for a super chill otome game to pick up, Lover Pretend is definitely a must buy.
