Melanin Friendly Games – Later Daters

Hey there Blerdy Tribe, it’s Melanin Monday here on Blerdy Otome and that means I’m spotlighting another Melanin Friendly Game! For those of you just joining the party—every Monday I spotlight games that feature Black and brown characters for anyone looking for titles with just a bit more representation. As a blerd and a gamer, I am always on the lookout for representation in my games. This is largely a personal project for me—there are almost no “diverse game” tags on major game sites—so, it can be pretty difficult find games with characters of color… unless you already know where to look.

In last week’s post I spotlighted Afterparty, a hilarious supernatural adventure game from Nigh School Studios. This week I’m looking at Later Daters from Bloom Digital Studios— the dating sim where you play as sexy seniors.

Old souls of the world, this is your time to shine – and potentially get a little action in the romance department!

You’re the newest resident at Ye OLDE retirement community, where you’ll meet a cast of sexy seniors who are all dying (not literally) to meet you. It’s a lot like summer camp, but with orthopedic shoes, bridge clubs, and more jell-o. Later Daters, the sexy yet wholesome gaming experience you never knew you needed!

Hashihime of the Old Book Town BL Game Review – A Never Ending Trip into the Bizarre

Hashihime of the Old Book Town is a psychedelic murder mystery boys love visual novel developed by ADELTA and published by MangaGamer. I’ve seen other reviewers throw around the phrase “existential horror” when discussing this game and after finishing Hashihime of the Old Book Town I agree that is a pretty fucking accurate description of this game.

Time plays a huge role in the plot of Hashihime of the Old Book Town, with the schtick being Tamamori using his time traveling ability to jump between several timelines each with wildly different outcomes. However, unlike your typical visual novel, where the player makes several in game choices that guide the course of the story—Hashihime of the Old Book Town is surprisingly linear. The game consists of five routes, each comprising of one chapter of the overall narrative—following a very strict story progression. After completing each chapter you are presented with a single new choice that “gently nudges” you onto a new path.

Hashihime of the Old Book Town - Fantasy

There are quite a few twists and turns throughout the game and while you don’t actually make any choices, it damn sure feels like it. From the moment you enter the game it’s a nonstop rollercoaster that takes you further and further from reality with each new revelation. Each route builds on the last, uncovering just a bit more of the mystery until the big reveal in the final chapter—and trust me, you want to finish this game.

Mizuchi Game Review – Slow Burn Yuri Romance

I have said on more than one occasion that I’m not really much of a yuri fan, and yet Aikasa Collective, still saw fit to send me a review copy of their debut visual novel—and I’m glad they did! Mizuchi 白蛇心傳 is an emotionally compelling story loosely based on the Chinese folk tale, Legend of the White Snake. Unlike most games that seem to rush towards their romantic resolution, Mizuchi takes its time building up the relationships between its female leads, and it is this slow burn approach that I find most appealing, as it allows for more natural story.

But, what is perhaps most intriguing about this game is how it weaves together the stories of three very different women while also delivering a rather thoughtful criticism of restrictive social norms of the time. I’m not going to lie, Mizuchi is a dense story that doesn’t lend itself to quick playthroughs… this is a game that is meant to be savored.
