Hakuoki SSL ~Sweet School Life~ to be released in English for the first time on Nintendo Switch in 2025!

Otome Fam we have won!! Independent developer and publisher Eastasiasoft Limited, the same folks that brought us Hakuoki Chronicle of Wind and Blossom, announced today that Hakuoki SSL ~Sweet School Life~ will be coming to Nintendo Switch in late 2025! Pre-orders for physical editions of the game will open with online retail partner Playasia later this week! The game headlines today’s Spring 2025 Showcase presentation from Eastasiasoft Limited.

Hakuoki SSL ~Sweet School Life~ is a visual novel adventure centered around heroine Chizuru Yukimura and the handsome legendary warriors of the Shinsengumi, but unlike most of the series that’s set in Edo period Japan, this standalone entry casts the characters as members of a school in modern Japan. This Nintendo Switch release will include English language support for the first time, which should be welcome news for the many otome fans that have long requested localization of this particular game.

Hakuoki Sweet School Life will have a Limited Edition

Physical copies will be available to pre-order through Playasia this Thursday, April 10th at 11:00pm Hong Kong time (11:00am ET / 8:00am PT / 4:00pm UK). Only 2000 Limited Editions will be produced and will include the game, manual, soundtrack CD, art book, mini case, Joy-Con sticker set, acrylic character standees and a numbered certificate in a collector’s box.

About Hakuoki SSL ~Sweet School Life~

The long-running Hakuoki otome visual novel series enters a new era! Hakuoki SSL ~Sweet School Life~ puts a modern spin on the Edo period romance of the main series, instead casting heroine Chizuru and the handsome warriors of the Shinsengumi as students and teachers living in modern Japan. School life antics ensue as these beloved characters hold a school festival, stress over midterms, get into watergun fights and more!

Experience a fun slice-of-life story through unlockable event scenes, engaging dialogue and beautifully illustrated character portraits, all localized in English for the first time. Explore unique endings with each character and enjoy mini-games that make this standalone entry extra special!

Key Features

  • Take the role of Chizuru as she’s surrounded by familiar faces in a new modern setting!
  • Engage in fun mini-games with the handsome warriors of the Shinsengumi.
  • Make key choices and discover unique endings with each possible love interest!
  • Enjoy voiceovers in Japanese and newly localized text in English.
  • Navigate scenarios with ease using a variety of UI controls and preferences!

  1. Dunno what happened with the Hakuoki rights, if they’ve indeed truly left Iffy for good, but Eastasiasoft is doing a lot for the fans right now 🙂 If I had a nickel for every post I’ve seen over the years lamenting the lack of an SSL localization, I could probably buy said localization at release :DD
Hakuoki is still in my backlog right now (for shame) but I might have to finally start playing this behemoth! So I don’t know squat about the main game version of Chizuru but holy moles is her design in this one the cutest thing 😮 (Watch me ignore the guys and constantly fawn over the heroine instead!)
In any case, this news is proof miracles truly do exist :))) Now fingers crossed for other long-held localization hopes to come to fruition, like Yoshiwara Higanbana finally getting an official English patch like the CN localization company once floated years ago, or who knows, Kenka Benchou Otome??? (Yeah right – I’m being fully delusional at this point)
Thank you for the serotonin boost, Blerdy, and hope you’ve been doing fine!

    1. FRIEND!! HI!! You are so right! I swear we could have bought the rights ourselves in the 10 years we’ve waited lol

BUT IT’S HERE!! And now I can demand Clock Zero and Side Kicks exclusively now lol

I played Hakuoki years ago (and never reviewed it), then I got Chronicle of Wind and Blossom (and didn’t review that either). So maybe after all these years I should join you in playing Hakuoki to get myself pumped for the SSL release!

I think the fluffy school life romance will be a nice palette cleanser after all the angst and darkness of the main game.

If we can get SSL the sky is the limit on otome localization!!

Glad this was able to boost your day, it’s hard out here in these streets!! Thank you for always popping in and leaving such wonderful comments!!

      1. Super late reply, sorry, but these are some preeeetty accurate additions- Clock Zero in particular I recall being the reigning champ of everyone’s localization wishlists way back when (and I get why, it really seems unique). Fingers crossed to get our wishes one day 😀 (maybe in another 15 years)
… I always feel bad when you mention switching up your review schedule, since I figure it has to be pretty packed – all the moreso since Otome Summer’25 is slowly but surely creeping on us 😮 But it does seem like a nice way of fueling the hype!
To be honest I’ve been in an otoge slump for a while, now. Gensou Manege was a bust for me save for a few routes and I’ve been feeling ambivalent about getting Battlefield Waltz even as someone who actually enjoys the writer’s other games. I expect this to be temporary but I’ve just been playing Ni no Kuni and virtually anything else lately Oo So maybe tackling The Ultimate Classic would be a nice way to get back in the grove?
Wouldn’t say no to any review you’d wanna write on the series in *any* case – considering both its history and yours with it, I’m pretty sure it would be interesting.
And awww, shucks (no u :D)

Gush about cute otome boys~
