30 Day Haikyuu Challenge- Day 3: The Character You Gradually Warmed Up To

Alright, it’s Day 3 of the 30 Day Haikyuu Challenge, so far, I’ve been able to keep up with these posts (but, it’s still early in the challenge). I read through the challenge prompts before I started and I realized that I’m going to be double dipping quite a bit, since at least one character in particular *cough* Tsukishima *cough* fits the bill for quite a few of the daily prompts (I’ll try to keep the posts he appears in to a minimum, but no promises).

I say all of this because, when I first read this prompt my mind, as it often does, immediately turned to Karasuno’s salty middle blocker, who I absolutely hated at the start of the series… but, that seemed like a bit of a cop out since I already wrote about him on day 1, so I did a bit of soul searching and settled on a different character…. *drumroll*

Yeah, it’s Daichi Sawamura… I can hear the collective gasps from all across the internet, but hear me out before you start grabbing your torches and pitchforks. When I first started watching Haikyuu I really didn’t feel one way or the other about the team’s captain. I mean he’s a great character and the heart of the team and all, but the show was mostly concerned with fleshing out the first years and the overall development of the team, so poor Daichi (and a number of other characters) kind of fell to the wayside in those earlier seasons.

In fact, one could argue that Daichi is one of the series’s underrated characters, everyone else gets their time in the sun (granted if your name isn’t Hinata or Kageyama, the screen time is relatively limited), but Daichi doesn’t really do much of anything until season 3… The only reason I’m not saving him for Day 23’s prompt is because there’s another poor soul that is even lower on the Haikyuu totem pole, than the team’s fearless leader. It took me quite awhile to notice let alone warm up to Daichi, but when he and Tanaka collided during Karasuno’s match against Wakutani in season 2, I think my heart actually stopped for a moment.

I think the looks on everyone’s faces says it all…

Up until that point I didn’t realize how integral Daichi was to the team, nor did I realize that I’d grown to actually care for the guy. I guess it’s true what they say, it takes losing something to truly know how much they mean to you… Okay, Daichi didn’t die, but it sure felt that way, and I actually had to pause the episode to figure out when exactly I started liking Daichi, he just kind of snuck up on me. Reliable, fair, a true leader, Daichi Sawamura just kind of weaseled his way into my heart without me even noticing. Like, damn, give a girl some warning first!

I am now a Daichi fan and I know I’m going to lose it when he and the other third years graduate… *wipes tear* I hope they never leave! So, which character did you guys gradually fall in love with? Was it a Karasuno player or one of the players from the other teams? Let me know what you think in the comments section. 1. OMG when Daichi collide with Tanaka, I screamed at my laptop and I got really worried (I’m saying that perfectly knowing what I made him go through in one of my fanfic).
He is indeed underrated and it’s only when he wasn’t there anymore the team really struggle. Like if their base was cracked.

Gush about cute otome boys~
