Snowkissed Romance is for the Shoujo Lovers!
I will admit that I was a kid in the 90’s so I wasn’t getting into any heart pounding romances back then. But as a lover of 90’s shoujo classics like Marmalade Boy, Wedding Peach, and Fushigi Yugi, I have a bit of nostalgia for the romance of the decade. So, I was ALL IN for Snowkissed Romance—from the hilariously cringey sayings and dialogue to the small design details to the delightfully endearing characters. It’s clear Kayla and Yana really put their all into crafting the perfect 90’s romance experience. From little things like, the yellow text, reminiscent of the yellow coloring of subtitles in 90’s anime to the gorgeous retro character designs.

On top of that the team managed to snag some of the top English VA talents for their cast; including David Matranga (Ren), Kaiji Tang (Yoh), Aaron Dismuke (Kichirou), and Jessie James Grelle (Shinichirou).
In this nostalgic winter romance, we are transported back to 1994 for an unforgettable holiday getaway with your bestie. (Un)fortunately, your girl’s trip is turned on its head when your brother and his three college roommates crash your cozy retreat. As if that wasn’t enough, you discover that his roommates are actually your three childhood friends, and in the time apart they have had quite the glow up!
And y’all the boys are plucked straight from the pages of my shoujo manga fantasies~ There’s Ren, the sweet, blonde, boy next-door heartthrob, who had me giggling like gremlin as soon as he said “hey”. Next is Yoh, who is definitely giving skaterboy energy, man is here with the comedic cringy lines—he took me out with “dead-ass”. Then there is my boy, Kichirou, he is very tsundere, man is always ready to throw shade, but he is so much fun to tease and I am gonna steal that man’s sweater (it looks cozy AF).

There is even a fun teen magazine styled personality quiz at the start of the game that helps not only craft your player character, but also determines which of the guys you might be most compatible with. For my playthrough, the quiz predicted Ren would be my ideal and I doubted it, because he looked a bit too choir boy for my tastes. But, you know what, the way that man had me giggling, sighing, and actin’ a whole fool when I played the demo—it was not wrong! That silly quiz unlocked a whole new type for me… That said, I still fell hard for Kichirou’s snarky ass and I know I’m gonna have fun making that man weak for me in the full game~ Yoh, despite being voiced by the VA of my toxic fave, Gojo, is still growing on me, but he’s cute and dumb, which is my ultimate type in the end.
However, the one that stole my heart the most is Shinichirou, the super mega foxy hot barista from the café downstairs. Man slick slid in and blew all the other boys out of the water, with his soothing voice, that gorgeous smile, and access to hot cocoa and snacks. Say less! Them other dudes are little boys, Shin is a man.

While Snowkissed Romance is a visual novel, it does have some “light” stats building elements to it that make for a more engaging experience and you can go on dates around town with the boys. There are a lot of really fun winter themed activities to choose from, like skiing on the slopes, ice skating, shopping in town, and even cozying up in the hot springs~ Unlike most otome where you kind of pick a guy and stick with em, Snowkissed Romance has a fun harem romance gameplay style. You can go on single or double dates with up to two of the love interests.
During the double dates you pick two guys to go on a date with and watch them vie for your affections. Of course the boys don’t exist in a bubble and depending on their relationship with each other, they can decide to decline. Which is exactly what happened to me when I invited Kichirou and Yoh on a dinner date, Kichi straight up said “If Yoh is going, I’m out” and I had to spend the night hungry and alone in my room. I was devastated! But, my double ski date the next day with Kichirou and Ren was perfect, because they at least get along enough to suck it up for an afternoon on the slopes.

I’m not really one for love triangles, because they tend to drag on entirely too long. Especially when we all know the protagonist is not gonna choose the sweet megane second lead who has been there all along… YES I AM TALKING TO YOU RIIKU! SOSHI WAS RIGHT THERE!! But, it’s a lot of fun watching the boys fight over me and who would say no to two hotties showering you with praise? NO ONE!
Outside of the romance, you also can spend time with your bestie, Suki who is the best girlie to have in your corner! Sis is giving Tomoyo from Card Captor Sakura vibes. While I’m not 100% cool with her crushin’ my brother Toma, she is so much fun and I love her energy! We really need more platonic besties in our otome games. There is definitely a great chemistry amongst the cast. They’re all friends and even when I wasn’t flirting my ass off, there was really a nice casual atmosphere in the game. All of the characters play off each other well and some of my favorite moments were when the boys were joking and teasing one another. I will never forget those dorks struggling to open that jar~
The demo covers the first three days of your trip, which gives you plenty of time with each of the boys and to try out the gameplay mechanics. I was so sad when this demo ended, because I wasn’t ready to say goodbye! I needed more time with Kichi, Yoh, and of course, my boy Ren!

There is seriously so much to love about Snowkissed Romance! This game is clearly a labor of love both for 90’s romance and otome! Yana and Kayla aren’t just amazing creators, they are otome lovers and they bring their love of the genre into every story they craft. They have been working hard and that comes through in the quality at the heart of Snowkissed Romance!
I wanna see the community go as hard for Snowkissed Romance as you have for some of these other otome games in the past! So, please play the demo, share the game on your feeds, and support Lovely Inc and the Kickstarter!

90’s Sailor Moon romance, specifically. Angelique the original otome game came out in 1995 and that’s not the style. Honestly kinda wish there was more 90s shoujo styles than “Sailor Moon Anime”
Lovely Inc has been very active on their socials promoting Snowkissed Romance and sharing the inspirations for the game and aesthetic. A few games they directly reference being Angelique and Tokimeki Memorial, which I saw more as inspiration for the gameplay and design of Snowkissed Romance. That said, there is a lot of great media from the 90’s that inform the “shoujo style” that Snowkissed is replicating. So, I recommend checking out the team’s socials for more details.
To your point about Sailor Moon, it is a hugely influential shoujo series, so you’d be hard-pressed to find a 90’s shoujo ANYTHING that doesn’t draw inspiration from it, even in passing. However, as someone who played the demo, I actually think Snowkissed Romance has more of a Marmalade Boy influence, than Sailor Moon…
