Thoughts on Dusk and Dawn
Balance your everyday life as a college student with your super secret career as a super hero in Dusk and Dawn. Follow Rene, a member of the superhero team, Dusk as she thwarts the evil schemes of Dawn. However, all is not as it seems and the line between good and evil isn’t as black and white as we’ve been led to believe. Will you choose to stay on the side of the heroes or will you join the villains?
Much like the magical girl otome, Paradigm Paradox, in Dusk and Dawn players can choose to stay on the path of justice and fight evil as a hero or if you’re feeling spicy join forces with the villains! I love a game that lets me be a little evil and the prospect of joining the baddies speaks to my chaotic soul! Of course when one of the baddies is the leather wearing hottie Shadow, I can see wanting to cozy up with the dark side.
There are two love interests in Dusk and Dawn; choose to romance your superhero partner, Bastion or the baddie with a body, Shadow. Each romance option ties in with Rene’s choice to stay a hero or become one of the “villains” and trust there are more than a few twists! Uncover the truth behind the conflict between Dawn and Dusk and decide where you stand.
Y’all know the biggest draw for me is the gorgeous ebony goddess, Rene. A Black superheroine led romance game? Say less! Rene is such a fun protagonist and I love her design. Her hair is adorable, doubly so when she is in her Bolt, hero form which has a distinct magical girl style. Black girl magic in action and practice!
Of course Dusk and Dawn has more than a few fun references to existing hero media—one of the villains has more than a passing resemblance to Spider-Man‘s Doc Ock and another looks very much like Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow. If you’re a fan of hero stuff, you’ll enjoy spotting all the little references.
Dusk and Dawn is on the shorter side, running you a few hours of gameplay, so its a nice quick play for a lazy weekend or after work. The game does feature a full English voice cast that help bring the world of Dawn and Dusk to life. I really enjoyed the voice acting and I especially love that the heroine is voiced too, so Rene feels like her own distinct character and not just a stand in for the player. All in all, Dawn and Dusk is a fun hero themed romance with a nice balance of action and mystery

Wait so I can be a villain AND look at cute artwork? Sign me up
Right! We can be a baddie and date a baddie too!
Even though I haven’t played romance games, and the last VN I played was Planetarium which was years ago, this does sound like an interesting concept with the superhero stuff.
I hope you check it out when you’re ready to dive back into VNs again.
No problem. I’ll keep that in mind.
