Fox-Colored Jealousy Manga Review

Fox-Colored Jealousy is a one volume fantasy boys love manga by Machi Suehiro and published in English by Yen Press.

Akiha Konno has a secret—he’s a fox boy. Well, it’s more of a fox spirit that shares his body, so sometimes he sprouts canine ears and a tail when he gets worked up. Whiiiich is exactly what happened the day he first met Yukuri Takahashi, the cute guy who saved him from the perv groping his butt on the train. Turns out, he’s the solution to Akiha’s problems. The fox wants to cuddle Yukuri, and Yukuri thinks Akiha’s body is cute, so…everything is A-okay, right? Wrong. Because Akiha is jealous of his inner spirit that’s enamored with Yukuri’s kindness, it’s only a matter of time before the feelings he has been bottling up explode…

Fox-Colored Jealousy Manga Review

Okay, this manga is absolutely adorable. Akiha has a secret, his family line is susceptible to possession by fox spirits. One of the quirks of their possession is whenever they get flustered they sport cute fox ears and a fluffy tail. What’s worse, the fox spirit inside them can take over their bodies at will, leading to some sticky situations. Fed up with being at the mercy of his own pesky fox spirit, Akiha leaves his home in the country to stay with distant relatives in the city in hopes they can help with his little problem.

But, on his first day in the city, overwhelmed by the crowds, he gets on the wrong train and ends up being the unwitting victim of a pervert. Thankfully he is saved by a good Samaritan just in the nick of time. Unfortunately for Akiha, the fox spirit is so grateful that it pops out and gets cuddly with their savior right there in the train station. Embarrassed, Akiha takes back control and books it outta there. But, that’s not the end of his troubles, turns out his savior is Yukuri Takahashi, one of the (distant) family members Akiha is supposed to be living with.

Yukuri is amused by the whole situation and doesn’t mind getting close with Akiha—in fact he finds his foxy features adorable. It also doesn’t help that being around Yukuri stirs up complicated feelings in Akiha that triggers his foxy transformations. Embarrassed and confused, Akiha doesn’t know what to make of his feelings for Yukuri, but if he doesn’t act fast his inner fox spirit will start making moves of its own…

This is the wildest love triangle romance I have ever read. It’s one thing to have a romantic rival, it’s another thing entirely for that rival to be a thirsty fox spirit inhabiting your body. But, instead of being messy, Fox-Colored Jealousy is super cute and wholesome.

Akiha is one of those people you just want to protect at all cost. Baby boy has had it rough because of his condition, so he’s big ol ball of insecurities. He desperately wants to connect with other people, but with how unpredictable the fox spirit is, it’s hard to really open up to people. So when Yukuri starts taking an interest in Akiha he’s unsure if he likes him for him. While, the fox is not shy about showing its affections for Yukuri—constantly throwing itself at the poor boy (not that he’s really complaining).

The fox is less a malicious entity and more of a mildly annoying one, popping out at random and putting Akiha into increasingly more ridiculous situations. Like making Akiha dig holes in the back garden at midnight or stealing kisses from Yukuri. But, as the story progresses the fox kind of becomes Akiha and Yukuri’s wingman. It fills Yukuri in on Akiha’s true feelings and when Akiha is too scared to make a move on Yukuri, the fox does it for him.

The romance in Fox-Colored Jealousy is fluffy and cozy and just so sugary sweet. The book was shrink wrapped so I thought there’d be more hanky panky, but aside from a short sex scene in the final bonus chapter, everything is pretty PG. Not a complaint, because I love me some sweet fluff every now and again and with Akiha’s ears and tail all the cuddling is adorable.

Fox-Colored Jealousy is the super sweet fluff we deserve. It’s a chill cute self contained fantasy romance that give you all the doki dokis. Yukuri and Akiha are adorable beans and the fox is an absolute delight! This is a fun, sweet fantasy with a cute premise that’ll keep you entertained from start to finish! (Also Yen Press will be licensing the spin-off, Kind of a Wolf later this year too!)

  1. I’m not going to lie… this one has me tempted. A cute fox spirit, and a goofy premise? I’ll have to see if my library has it or something…
