We all have those moments when we need a bit of a pick me up. Whether it’s work or school that’s got you overwhelmed or maybe you just need to check out from the hustle and bustle of modern living, we all need something to restore the balance. That’s where comfort series come in, and when I’m not binge watching Law and Order SVU for the umpteenth time, I’m diving in to one of my tried and true comfort series!
There are a handful of series that I turn to whenever I just need to check out and chill. I’ve already shared my comfort manga and now it’s time to share my comfort anime!
Hitorijime My Hero
High schooler Masahiro Setagawa is a fairly helpless delinquent, so much so that the neighborhood bullies use him to run their errands. His life changes when he meets high school teacher Kosuke Oshiba.
Official Synopsis
When I say I love this series, I mean I LOVE this series and it’s not even because it’s especially good or anything–the comedy can be a bit over the top and I’m not really a fan of the beta couple. But, whatever it is, I really enjoy watching Hitorijime My Hero, the romance between the main couple is cute and Masahiro is the kind of guy you just wanna protect…
Hitorijime My Hero is one of those shows where you can kinda just chill and watch over a weekend, it’s cute and there isn’t too much drama.
We All Need A Hero: Hitorijime My Hero Series Review
I swear Hitorijime My Hero is the only reason my Amazon Prime account gets any use, I must have watched this series like 10 time already…
Haikyuu
Inspired by a championship match he sees on TV, junior high schooler Hinata joins a volleyball club and begins training, despite his short height.
Official Synopsis
It’s no secret that I love Haikyuu, it’s the series that really made me fall in love with sports anime. I watched the first episode on a whim and that was all it took to get me hooked, I’ve watched this series so many times over the years and each time I find more reasons to love it. Whether it’s watching Karasuno claw their way to the top of the volleyball world or the fun character dynamics, there’s a lot of heart packed in to the series. Besides there’s something to be said about a series that gets you to root for the rival teams…
Whenever I’m having a bad day and need a pick-me-up I definitely watch a few a few episodes of Haikyuu and I’m A-OK!
10 Reasons You Should Be Watching Haikyu!!
I binge watch the entire series every couple of months and no matter how many time I watch this series I find my self falling even more in love
Mushi-Shi
Ginko, a Mushi master, travels from place to place researching the Mushi and helping people who are suffering because of the Mushi.
Official Synopsis
Mushi-shi is just such a chill series that just kind of goes with the flow–each episode follows Ginko, a Mushi master as he tackles a new case involving people who unwittingly cross paths with the mysterious and elusive Mushi. Sometimes he’s able to arrive just in time to restore the balance, sometimes, he doesn’t and that’s okay too. Whatever the outcome, you’re bound to be left with a new respect for life… among other things.
Also, Ginko is hot, like ridiculously good looking…
Fangirl Moment: Mushi-Shi
I love Mushi-shi, in fact it is one of my favorite series, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve re-watched the series over the years…it’s just so calming.
Yamishibai
Yamishibai is a picture-story style of animation whose motif is surrounded and based off the rumors, and urban legends throughout the history of Japan.
Official Synopsis
Okay, I am a diehard horror fan, slasher flicks, psychological thrillers, even campy 80’s horror–you name it I’ll probably sit down and watch it. But, what I love most of all are urban legends, so you know I was all over Yamishibai. Short 5-minute horror stories that range from deeply unsettling to oddly satisfying, the series is full of great spooky stories to make any horror fan giddy!
Even when you know the outcome, it’s still fun to watch and with October right around the corner, it’s the perfect time to give this series another look!
So What Are Your Comfort Anime?
That’s my list and it’s definitely much more chill than my list of comfort manga, but that’s a discussion for another day… Now, I wanna turn things over to you! What are your comfort anime series? What are the anime you watch when you need a pick me up?
I think Howl’s Moving Castle and Junjou Romantica. I think I’ve watched 10 times haha
Oh my god, I didn’t even think animated movies! The Ghibli movies are my jam and now that they’re on HBO Max I watch one a weekend
When I’m feeling down I can always go for some Lucky Star, and, another movie, Night is Short, Walk on Girl.
Haikyuu is definitely one for me too! It’s so uplifting and most of the cast really are very likeable (sometimes I like the rivals more lol)! I haven’t watched Mushi-shi but I love Natsume’s Book of Friends and that has a similar chill vibe.
