Melanin Friendly Games – Afterparty

Hey there Blerdy Tribe, it’s Melanin Monday here on Blerdy Otome and that means I’m spotlighting another Melanin Friendly Game! For those of you just joining the party—every Monday I spotlight games that feature Black and brown characters for anyone looking for titles with just a bit more representation. As a blerd and a gamer, I am always on the lookout for representation in my games. This is largely a personal project for me—there are almost no “diverse game” tags on major game sites—so, it can be pretty difficult find games with characters of color… unless you already know where to look.

In last week’s post I spotlighted Mission: It’s Complicated, a superhero themed dating sim from Schell Games. This week I’m looking at the hilarious adventure game, Afterparty from Night School Studios.

In AFTERPARTY, you play Milo and Lola, recently deceased best buds who suddenly find themselves staring down an eternity in Hell. But there’s a loophole: outdrink Satan and he’ll grant you re-entry to Earth.

Milo and Lola are now dead, thirsty, and roaming the streets of Nowhere, the outermost island of Hell.

It’s time to:

  1. Go on the best bender ever
  2. Party with dangerous demons and the not so dearly departed
  3. Best and impress Satan’s Monarchs to gain access to the big guy
  4. Drink Satan under the table

What adventures will you stumble through in the underworld? Every step is up to you. Time to go on the best bender ever, uncover the mystery of why you’ve been damned, and drink the big guy under the table.

Afterparty is a supernatural comedy adventure where your main goal is to outdrink the Prince of Hell! Follow Milo and Lola as they navigate the colorful hellscape of the underworld—which operates like an after hours college town. Drink your way through various bars, downing cocktails that not only get you buzzed, but also grant you “special” abilities that will help you as you smooze up dangerous demons and even Satan himself.

I picked up this game on a whim when I bought my Switch and it was love at first sight!! I mean, come on, who doesn’t want to challenge Satan to a drinking contest?! But, what really sold me on the game was it’s witty dialogue and how your choices don’t just affect Milo and Lola, but ALL of Hell. You spend most of the game wandering around Hell, hitting up bars as you work your way up to the Big Man himself and while the end goal is to meet Satan and challenge him to a drinking contest. But, there is so much more to Afterparty than just that—there are a whole host of demons and damned souls to interact with and each one is more interesting than the next! Most of whom will help you on your journey… for a price.

Complete various quests that range from collecting souls, breaking and entering, and of course TONS of drinking games… and trust some of those drinking games are pretty challenging. But, what I love about Afterparty is that the game seamlessly weaves the various quests and mini-games into the narrative, which makes for a much more natural feeling gameplay style.

Of course the real stars of the show are the leads, Lola and Milo, this dynamic duo wakes up in Hell with no memory of how or why they’re there. It’s up to you to help them piece together their fragmented memories while playing as both Milo and Lola. Your choices don’t just determine their personalities, but also the nature of their relationship with one another. Lola is definitely much more confident than Milo, but I really love their dynamic–from the personal jabs and playful banter, they really feel like a pair of besties on a night out. They don’t feel like characters in a game, but rather real people you might run into at a bar or on the street.

There are so many reasons you should give this game a try—with it’s hilarious premise, smartly written dialogue, and fun diverse cast—Afterparty is a must for your gaming library!

You can play the game now on Steam, Nintendo Switch, XBox One, Playstation 4.
