Episodic Otome Games and Visual Novels You Totally Should Be Playing

Happy Monday!! What better way to kick of the week than with some game recommendations?!

Despite my aversion to cliffhangers and my love/hate relationship with ongoing series, I’ve really been getting into episodic games lately… There really is something to be said for playing a game at your leisure, with new episodes released every few weeks (or months). It gives you something to do between game releases or while your procrastinating on a project without losing hours of your life… It’s like a gaming snack rather than a whole meal and with my crazy schedule, episodic games offer the perfect fix for when I’m craving some gaming time, without the a long gameplay commitment.

So, I compiled a list of some of my favorite episodic games, from life sims, to puzzle games, to visual novels, and more! These are the 8 episodic otome games and visual novels you should totally be playing!!

Love Ritual – English Otome Game Review

Last week, Xand Arts released their debut title, Love Ritual, a richly imaginative detective fantasy that blends together the team’s seductive characters and designs with an immersive investigative narrative. Love Ritual follows Riilai, a young Ritualist hired on as a consultant for a local police investigation tasked with uncovering the truth behind an illegal summoning ritual. The police currently have two suspects in custody, a Necromancer and a Druid, both of whom have retained counsel to help prove their innocents. The two delegates, a suave Necromancer named Kalaseth, and a naïve good-natured Druid named Shanrae will do anything to get their clients off the hook. But, the deeper Riilai delves into the case the less black and white things become, and with two handsome advocates working so closely Riilai has a rough road ahead.

Xand Arts markets Love Ritual as an adult otome, and it’s easy to see why, with its captivating mystery adventure narrative and seductive character designs, Love Ritual delivers a sophisticated gaming experience.

Witches Need Love Too – First Kiss at a ~Spooky~ Soiree Review

Hey Hey Heroes, Travelers, and Wandering NPCs, it’s the spookiest time of year and I’ve been gearing up for a month-long celebration of all things spooky. Throughout the month of October, I’ll be bringing you guys tons of great Halloween-themed game reviews, lists, and other posts to get you guys in the mood for Halloween!

Today, I’m covering a super cute Halloween-themed yuri visual novel, First Kiss at a Spooky Soiree, from indie developer Nami. The game was originally created over the course of just one month for the annual game jam, Yuri Jam 2016. Like most game jam titles, First Kiss at a Spooky Soiree is rather short with playthroughs taking anywhere between 10 and 15 minutes, so you could probably finish the entire game in under an hour if you’re a fast reader or if you don’t die from the cuteness over load. The game takes place within the same universe as Nami’s Yuri Jam 2015 entry, Syrup and the Ultimate Sweet and features a new cast of characters.

In First Kiss at a Spooky Soiree, you play as Marzipan, a witch that specializes in light magic as she attempts to find someone willing to share a kiss with her. So, she and her BFF, a catgirl named Jam hit up a nearby party in hopes of helping Marzipan lock lips with some mysterious stranger.

Game Details

  • Available for Windows, Mac, Linux
  • 5 pursuable characters (female)
  • 7 unique endings
  • Free to Play
  • Gameplay Length: 30-50 minutes

Murder, Mystery, and Meddlesome Mind – When the Shutter Stops Alpha Demo Review

Hey Hey Heroes, Travelers, and Wandering NPCs, I recently discovered this really great demo and I just had to share my thoughts about it! Unlike most of the games I cover here on Nice Job Breaking It, Hero this one isn’t a romance per se, I know, le gasp. This time around I’m covering a visual novel that’s more akin to investigative adventure games, like Ace Attorney and Professor Layton but with the grittiness you’d find in the film noir of the 40’s and 50’s. When the Shutter Stops is an upcoming mystery detective game and the debut title of the up and coming indie developer Remort Studios. The game follows Priscilla “Pri” Vate a former child detective who finds herself being dragged back into the city’s gritty underbelly when the serial killer she put away years ago suddenly has his conviction overturned.

The game is currently on Kickstarter and I strongly suggest throwing your support their way while they work to reach their $10,000 USD funding goal. When the Shutter Stops is a mid-length commercial release, with the final asking price of just $25.00, but, if you support the game during the KS campaign you can snag a copy for just $20.00. This is an alpha demo so there are a few assets that aren’t fully realized yet, but, it does cover a good bit of the expected gameplay, including the investigative and interrogation portions of the game.

Demo Basics

  • Available for Windows, Linux, Mac
  • 4 Paths, 3 Endings per Route
  • Commercial (Demo is FREE)
  • Demo Length: 30-50 minutes

Let’s Show Our Support for When the Shutter Stops!!

Hey hey Heroes, Travelers, and Wandering NPCs, I’m back with another crowd funding campaign!! There’s a Kickstarter campaign for an upcoming mystery detective visual novel, When the Shutter Stops that I think you guys should definitely check out! There are less than a month left in the campaign and they need a little help hitting their goal! The campaign ends on October 23rd, 2018!

For those of you new, here, Let’s Show Our Support posts highlight current crowdfunding campaigns for indie games (usually VNs and OELVNs). I give you guys the basic rundown of the game and the perks of supporting the game’s campaign, as well as links to all the relevant game related pages and sites.

I am a sucker for detective and investigative adventure games, and When the Shutter Stops definitely puts me in the mind of adventure games like Cing’s Hotel Dusk series and Capcom’s Ace Attorney franchise. And then the Kickstarter page even compares the game to the classic noir film The Maltese Falcon and one of my all time favorite films Chinatown, so let’s just say I am more than a little hyped to see this project become a reality!

Wishes in Pen: Chrysanthemums in August Demo Review

Afterthought Studios the folks behind the supernatural romance, Purfectly Ever After and the fantasy visual novel, When Our Journey Ends have decided to put their hat into the otome ring with the announcement of their new otome focused subsidiary, LunaniereThe first title in their new otome line is a supernatural fantasy currently on Kickstarter (they’ve already exceed their goal), Wishes in Pen: Chrysanthemums in August. An ambitious undertaking to say the least, Lunaniere has teamed up with game production company Sekai Project to bring their vision to life.

Recently, I sat down and gave the demo for Wishes in Pen: Chrysanthemums in August, a try and while I am impressed with the execution, I couldn’t help but feel like, Lunaniere is playing it safe with their debut title. Wishes in Pen is a fantasy historical romance otome in which a 20-something young woman is magically transported back in time to 1860’s Japan at the end of the Tokogawa Shogunate, following our heroine as she navigates her way through political and social unrest as the legendary Boshin War unfolds. This isn’t a new concept, not by a long shot, historical Japan has been the subject of many otome games, from mobile games like Voltage Inc.’s Sakura Amidst the Chaos and NTT Solmare’s Sengoku Darling, not to mention Two-Five’s Yo Jin Bo and Idea Factory’s Hakuoki franchise. Historical romance otome games are a dime a dozen and guaranteed some success, especially given the popularity of the Hakuoki series in the West.

Demo Basics

  • Available for Windows, Linux, Mac, and Android
  • Five Potential Love Interests
  • Demo Length: 30 mins- 1 hour (Prologue)

A Hauntingly Addictive Visual Novel – I Woke Up Next To You Again Review

Hey Hey Heroes, Travelers, and Wandering NPCs, I’m getting back into the swing of things by going back and working through all of the game review requests I received while I was on hiatus. First up is a rather surreal and surprisingly deep short psychological thriller visual novel from Angela He (Zephyo). This is a game unlike anything I have ever played before, with it’s dream-like visuals and stream of consciousness like storytelling, Angela He paints a rather startling picture of the psychological toll addiction and depression can have on one’s life, through the lens of a toxic more-than-one-night stand relationship.

“You’d told me,
Hey, this is a one-time thing, and I said yeah, of course –
Yet here we are.”

..who, exactly, am I waking up next to?

A romance about a more-than-one-night stand;
A psychological thriller about toxic addiction.

Synopsis (Game Site)

I Woke Up Next to You Again is a pay what you want PC game available for Windows, Mac, and Linux over on itch.io. It’s a rather short game, with playthroughs lasting anywhere between 15 – 30 minutes, depending on your reading speed.
