[First Thoughts] Love Brings You Home

Voltage Inc. games make up about 45% of my gaming backlog. The company was my first introduction to the world of otome games and over the years I have amassed quite a few stories from each of the many, many Otome Romance titles they produce. Because I have so many stories I tend to have a hard time deciding which routes to play… So, rather than making the agonizing decision on my own, I ran a Twitter poll and let you guys decide for me. Unfortunately, that backfired since the poll ended in a tie between Diary of a Step Sister and Love Brings You Home, so I still had to choose in the end and I went with the latter.

Love Brings You Home is one of the “newer” Otome Romance titles, having been released exclusively on the Love 365 app and not as one of the standalone apps (at least here in the west). Given all the fantasy romance games I’ve been playing lately, I was looking forward to diving into something with a slice-of-life vibe and Love Brings You Home was exactly what I was looking for; something grounded in reality (at least for an otome game). If I had to sum this game up in one word, it would be ‘wholesome’, no gimmicks just a wholesome romance…

It’s Okay Because “Romance” – Otome Games With Questionable Storylines

Otome games offer women (and men) a fantasy romance experience of their dreams, but sometimes they stretch the limits of “fantasy” and delve into some questionable territory. These games play around with your suspension of disbelief, dropping you head first into scenarios that most of us would find downright frustrating if they happened to us in real life. From lowkey abusive love interests and dubious consent, otome games are known to toe the line between what is acceptable and what isn’t.

no.gif

There have been times while playing an otome game where I had to step outside myself and check my self respect at the door in order to achieve my happily ever after with my chosen love interest. Of course, that isn’t the case with all otome games, there are some perfectly lovely ones that don’t force players to wave a hand at less than savory story elements. However, there are still quite a few that’ll raise a few eyebrows… So, that got me thinking about some of the more ridiculous otome game storylines and premises. The ones that really made me go, WTF.

Our Life: Beginnings & Always Demo Review – How Will Your Life Unfold?

This is yet another late review (I’m slowly working my way through all my game requests), but I’ve been following GB Patch for awhile and I LOVE their games so I was going to get around to playing the demo for their upcoming slice-of-life visual novel, Our Life: Beginnings and Always, eventually. I’ve played a few of their games before and I can honestly say that each of their games is a one of a kind experience, with each new title showing off just how versatile GB Patch is as a studio. They never tell the same story twice, so you can always expect something different from their new releases.

However, Our Life: Beginnings and Always is by far their most ambitious project, spanning several years, following its characters from childhood to adulthood in what promises to be a heartwarming coming of age story. The game is currently on Kickstarter, but the campaign is set to end on November 10th, so definitely check that out! The demo covers the first two stages of the character’s lives (childhood and adolescence), but the full game will cover four different periods of life (childhood, adolescence, teenage, and adulthood). And since Our Life: Beginnings & Always is set in the same world as their earlier game XOXO Droplets expect to see cameos of a few of the boys from that game from time to time. I played through the early demo and I am already in love with this game and its concept!

Reanimation Scheme Demo Review – Summon Up Some Romance

I’m super late with this review, but I wanted to make sure I gave Wind Chimes Games’s demo for their debut visual novel, Reanimation Scheme, my full and undivided attention. I wanted to have this out before the end of the Kickstarter campaign, and I just managed to make it with a few hours to spare.

Reanimation Scheme is a supernatural fantasy romance visual novel, that is rooted in magic, mysticism, and necromancy. Yes, you read that right, necromancy… most of the supernatural games I’ve played tend to shy away from death magic, preferring to focus on the big three of the supernatural world; Vampires, Werewolves, and Witches. But, I’ve had my fill of the same old fantasy stories, so Reanimation Scheme is a welcome change of pace. With it’s spunky heroine, inventive premise, and gorgeous visuals, Reanimation Scheme is definitely worth checking out! Keep Reading to see my thoughts on the demo, which covers three chapters of the game.

[OWLS “Fantasy” Blog Tour] Otome Games: Choose Your Fantasy

It’s time for another OWLS Blog Tour, most of you were directed here after reading Takuto’s lovely post about Sword Art Online Alicization and if you haven’t read his post I definitely recommend giving it a read!! If you stumbled upon this post by chance, welcome to Blerdy Otome! The end of the year is fast approaching and we’ve hit our 10th Blog Tour of 2019. For those of you just joining the party, OWLS is a group of bloggers and vloggers that hope to spread a message of acceptance and understanding through thoughtful community activism! We use our love of pop-culture and other media to discuss a wide range of topics. Each month we host themed Blog Tours where we discuss topics we feel are important to the greater fandom community.

owl

For the month of October our topic is “Fantasy” I decided to discuss otome games (again) and how they portray romance. The appeal of otome games comes not from depicting realistic romance, but from the fantasy of what we wish romance could be.

In the month of October, we will be exploring the world of fantasy in pop culture. The genre of fantasy focuses on telling stories about our external and internal environments. There are many ways we can interpret the word fantasy. For example, we can talk about how a fantastical place could glorify what reality should be, or the dangers of ideal expectations. Fantasy could also be seen as taking a “wild journey” or a “hallucination,” and how that can affect our psyche and well-being. Additionally, fantasy can focus on our personal dreams and expectations, and how those expectations do not align with our reality. Overall, our posts will reflect on how we view the fantasy genre and what we can learn about these pop culture mediums.

– October 2019 Blog Tour Prompt

I’ll reference a few otome games in this post, but there shouldn’t be any spoilers since I intend to focus primarily on the concept of otome games rather than a rundown of a specific title.

Let’s Show Our Support for ALigneD!!

Hey hey Heroes, Travelers, and Wandering NPCs, here we are with another Kickstarter support post! For those of you new, here, Let’s Show Our Support posts highlight current crowdfunding campaigns for indie games (usually VNs and OELVNs). I give you guys the basic rundown of the game and the perks of supporting the game’s campaign, as well as links to all the relevant game related pages and sites.

ALigneD is an adventure game with a heavy focus on VR, but with the narrative driven gameplay of a traditional otome game/visual novel. The premise of the game is a combination of Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One and the anime Sword Art Online and a dash of Dramatical Murder. The game is being developed by Hong Kong based indie game developer Zoomob and is planned for a Winter 2019/Spring 2020 Steam release.

Silver:Line – Demo Review

I usually have a hard time writing reviews about demos, since unlike completed games, they don’t always have all the finalized assets that you’d expect from a full blown release. If you’re lucky, a demo will cover the common route or the prologue, which at least gives you a fairly good feel of the game’s concept and characters. But, if you’re not, a demo is more of a teaser trailer of ideas that doesn’t really stand up to much scrutiny, which doesn’t allow much for me as a reviewer to write about. So I tend to be very particular about which demos I review.

Recently Code V Productions released a demo for their upcoming fantasy visual novel, Silver:Line and I was impressed not only with the quality, but the execution. A fully realized world with an inventive premise and unique characters, Silver:Line is by far one of the best demos I have played this year!

Recruited as an imperial scholar serving the crown of Lucarene, you lead a peaceful life at the castle, responsible for researching, tracking, and recording everything there is to know about the royal city. Living a life you once thought you could only ever dream of, you wouldn’t change anything for the world. But as fate would have it, you’re thrown into a turmoil of events where you’re pinned as a scapegoat and forced to flee the country, running for your very life. You set off on a journey, featuring a colourful cast and new horizons.

My Only Sunshine Review – A Romance VN That’s Out Of This World!

I absolutely love NaNoRenO because it gives up and coming developers the opportunity to make their debut in the game development world and bring their own unique ideas to life. These are usually smaller projects put together by a much smaller team, however, I’ve played quite a few NaNoRenO games in the past that are on par (if not better than) some bigger name commercial releases. You never quite know what you’re going to get with a NaNorenO title, but you can always be sure it will be a one of a kind experience.

So, when Yoshibb reached out to me about their NaNoRenO 2019 entry, My Only Sunshine I was more than happy to give the game a look since the premise was quite unlike anything I have ever seen before: A romance fantasy visual novel involving humanoid versions of the planets. I was intrigued. I’ve played otome games where you date representatives of astrological signs, gods and goddess, but never planets.

Once every millennium, Sun holds a huge gathering of the planetary spirits. While Sun has found herself down in the dumps recently — including a relationship with Terra (Earth) that is on the rocks and what she now considers a largely mundane, solitary existence — she hopes that the get together will brighten things up. However, after Terra ruins her event with his reckless behavior, Sun decides it’s time to play the field and chooses a new planetary partner.

Steam Prison Review – A Deep and Immersive Steampunk Romance

Steam Prison is the newest otome game localization from MangaGamer, following their release of Poni-Patchet’s OZMAFIA in 2016 and the R18 otome, Fashioning Little Miss Lonesome. There is always a lot of hype surrounding new otome localizations, but, Steam Prison was the first big otome release of 2019, not associated with Idea Factory. Steam Prison, was originally released in 2016 by HuneX for PC as both an all-ages 17+ release (the MangaGamer release of the 17+ version). A Vita port was released in 2017, that added an extra route for the MC’s partner, Finn.

In the game you play as an 18 year old police officer named, Cyrus Tistella, living in the raised utopian city known as the Heights. Everything is coming up roses for our heroine, with a new promotion and her upcoming marriage into the high ranking Evans family. Things take a turn for the worst, when Cyrus is accused of murdering her parents. Unable to prove her innocence, Cyrus is banished to the Depths a place where the most brutal criminals are sent to atone for their crimes. But, when she arrives, Cyrus finds that the Depths is not the primitive wasteland she once believed it to be, she soon learns that all is not as it seems as the things she once held to be true start to fall apart.

When the Night Comes Review – A Devilishly Addictive Supernatural Mystery

When the Night Comes is an episodic supernatural fantasy otome game from indie team, Lunaris Games. I’ve played my fair share of supernatural otome games, each promising a fresh take on an already over-saturated genre, but, When the Night Comes is truly something special.

Each new chapter builds on the momentum of its predecessor drawing you into the complex world of magic and mystery. In the game, you are a hunter that has been called to the quiet town of Lunaris to assist with an ongoing investigation into a series of grisly murders. But, there’s more to this case than your superiors are letting on, delve into the world of Witches, Vampires, Demons, and Lycans to slowly uncover the secrets of the town. The closer you get to the truth the more dangerous things become, forcing you to rely on the very creatures you’ve been tasked with hunting. Changeling Review – An Imaginative Supernatural Romance VN

Newbie developer Steamberry Studios delivers a magical adventure in their debut supernatural fantasy visual novel, Changeling. The game follows Nora, a high school senior who finds herself drawn into the world of the paranormal after moving back to her childhood hometown of Pine Hollow. A community of Cryptics (supernatural beings) operates in the shadows of Pine Hollow, each with their own secrets… After experiencing a number of strange occurrences, Nora discovers that she is also a Cryptic and the revelation sends her world into a tailspin. But, unlike her friends and fellow member of the Supernatural Club, her supernatural origins might be darker than anyone could have anticipated. With danger around every corner, Nora must rely on one of six guys, to uncover the secrets of her past while also helping them deal with their own supernatural issues.

I’ve been following Changeling‘s production for a very long time now, from the kickstarter campaign to tumblr dev updates to the beta testing and I’ve talked with the devs at length about the game on a number of occasions. So, I suppose you could say I am really invested in this game.

Mystery, Suspense and Zombies?!- 7’Scarlet: Character & Route Thoughts (Part 2)

Originally this was a part of the main review, but the more I kept writing the more my thoughts on the characters kind of took on a life of their own. So, I’m trying something new and separating out my thoughts on the characters and their routes from the main review. I don’t know if I’ll do this again, but, I had some pretty strong feelings about some of the characters/routes and it just didn’t gel well with the rest of the review.

7 scarlet chara

If you want a general review of 7’scarlet check out my previous post, Mystery, Suspense and Zombies?! – 7’Scarlet Review (Part 1)If you’ve already given that a gander and you just want to know how I felt about the love interests and routes, you’re in the right place. A word of caution though, there are spoilers here, so if you haven’t finished the game perhaps you might want to hold off on reading this post until you do.

Mystery, Suspense and Zombies?!- 7’Scarlet Otome Game Review (Part 1)

7’scarlet is a mystery otome game and one of the most recent localizations to make its way Stateside. The game follows Ichiko Hanamaki, a college student whose brother disappeared a year prior to the start of the game while visiting the town of Okunezato. While investigating the town, Ichiko and her childhood friend Hino stumble upon a strange website detailing several mysteries surrounding the town and decide to participate in an online meetup hosted by a few of the site’s members. Once in Okunezato, Ichiko and Hino meet the rest of the Okunezato Supernatural Club and begin investigating the strange goings on in the town. But, when a series of mysterious deaths began to take place, the town’s dark past is slowly revealed.

7-scarlet

When I picked up 7’scarlet, I wasn’t expecting to stick with it as long as I did, let alone finish the damn thing. I fully intended on just playing one route and tucking the game safely back into my backlog. Sadly, the route I was most interested in playing is the second to last route in the game (I’m not including the True End or the Secret Route). Pro tip: A sure fire way to get me to play all the way through a game is to stick the megane routes at the end of the game. So, I powered through all the routes until I could finally romance the bespectacled hottie of my dreams and by that point I figured why not just go balls out and finish the game. Now that I have that coveted PSN 7’scarlet Completion trophy, I’m ready to give my thoughts on the game.

[OWLS Blog Tour] If I Can’t Have You No One Will – A Yandere’s Obsession

Hey Hey Heroes, Travelers, and Wandering NPCs, it’s February and with it comes another OWLS Blog Tour! Last month during our Metamorphosis Blog Tour we looked at the many transformations characters have gone through for better or for worse. This month we’re celebrating love and romance with our February Adore Blog Tour!

In February, we will be exploring love and romance. The word selected is “adore” because it has two main connotations: to be loved and respected or to feel worshiped. We will analyze characters that give us a feeling of admiration and explain why we love those characters. We will also be exploring different forms of love (familial, friendship, and even self-love) and how those types of love influence our lives.

February 2019 Blog Tour Prompt

Love comes in many shapes and forms, but, in February, we tend to focus on the sweet rose colored, hearts and candy side of romantic love. Rather than focusing on romance and love in the traditional sense, I decided to take a crack at the darker side of love. What happens when love gets twisted into obsession? For this month’s Blog Tour, I’m going to be looking at obsessive love, the point where love becomes an oppressive compulsion that consumes the lover and the object of their affection.

Have You Eaten Today? – Ayakashi Gohan – Otome Game Review

Ayakashi Gohan (あやかしごはん) is a 2014 supernatural fantasy otome game from Honeybee, with an updated Vita port of the game, Ayakashi Gohan ~Oomori~ being released a year later. While the game doesn’t have an official English language release, fan translation team Hanataba Translations released an English patch for the PC version of the game back in 2017.

Ayakashi Gohan follows a young girl, Rin Akane, as she adjusts to life in Momoji Village, a place where ayakashi and humans live peacefully with one another. Over the course of the game, Rin interacts with the various human and ayakashi residents of the town helping to bridge the gap between both races. It’s a lighthearted game about eating good food and romancing hot ayakashi… or so I thought…

[Bite-Sized Review] Kitty Love – Way to look for love

Kitty Love-Way to Look for Love is the latest otome game from DIGIMERCE, and among the first wave of otome games released for the Nintendo Switch. The game follows Honoka, a young shop clerk who is magically transformed into a cat. In order to break her curse, Honoka must lock lips with one of five eligible bachelors. There’s her sweetheart of a boss, Takuma Suguri; her childhood friend, Kohei Natsume; the stoic patrol cop, Shogo Fujimoto; the friendly neighborhood host, Kyosuke Kawahara; and finally the mysterious flower arrangement artist, Narumi Saijo. The love interests, were pretty by the book, checking off all of the usual otome tropes and cliches, but, they are still enjoyable enough. There isn’t a set play order, however, I highly recommend playing Narumi Saijo’s route last, lest you want game ruining spoilers, granted the “big reveal” was kind of obvious from the beginning.

My Magical Demon Lover – BL Game Review

Spicy Ecchi Content + A Yaoi Fantasy Story + A Dash of Comedy = My Magical Demon Lover, a ‘mature players’ dating sim that puts the wannabe wizard Tristan with his choice of three hot demons.

[First Thoughts] Rose in the Embers

“Our love may be forbidden…

But you are all I want. And with a kiss, the walls that stand between you two crumble to dust…

Yours is a love story so shocking it will shake society to its core…

After the transition from the standalone apps to the Love 365 portal app, I kind of fell out of the Voltage Inc. game for awhile. Since the change quite a few new apps have been released, but among the first new apps was the historical fantasy Rose in the Embers  (Romaji Taishō Roman, Unmei no Hito). This is the third historical romance game from Voltage Inc. following on the heels of Sakura Amidst Chaos and Era of Samurai: Code of Love, which were set Sengoku and Bakumatsu Eras, respectively. However, for Rose, Voltage bumped up their timeline a bit, setting the game during the Taisho Era (1912 – 1926).

Rose 2.PNG

I’m not really a history buff, but from what I gather the time period continued the Meiji Era’s push towards modernization and more western ideals, modeled after the Victorian era. So there’s this unique blend of Japanese fashion and ideals meshed with the more “modern” Western ideals, which makes for a visually interesting story. So, I was pretty optimistic when I loaded up the prologue in the Love 365 app…

Witches Need Love Too – First Kiss at a ~Spooky~ Soiree Review

Hey Hey Heroes, Travelers, and Wandering NPCs, it’s the spookiest time of year and I’ve been gearing up for a month-long celebration of all things spooky. Throughout the month of October, I’ll be bringing you guys tons of great Halloween-themed game reviews, lists, and other posts to get you guys in the mood for Halloween!

Today, I’m covering a super cute Halloween-themed yuri visual novel, First Kiss at a Spooky Soiree, from indie developer Nami. The game was originally created over the course of just one month for the annual game jam, Yuri Jam 2016. Like most game jam titles, First Kiss at a Spooky Soiree is rather short with playthroughs taking anywhere between 10 and 15 minutes, so you could probably finish the entire game in under an hour if you’re a fast reader or if you don’t die from the cuteness over load. The game takes place within the same universe as Nami’s Yuri Jam 2015 entry, Syrup and the Ultimate Sweet and features a new cast of characters.

In First Kiss at a Spooky Soiree, you play as Marzipan, a witch that specializes in light magic as she attempts to find someone willing to share a kiss with her. So, she and her BFF, a catgirl named Jam hit up a nearby party in hopes of helping Marzipan lock lips with some mysterious stranger.

Game Details

  • Available for Windows, Mac, Linux
  • 5 pursuable characters (female)
  • 7 unique endings
  • Free to Play
  • Gameplay Length: 30-50 minutes

Romance Woes Amidst an Alien Invasions – PAIRS Review

Walk a mile in someone else’s shoes in the sci-fi fantasy visual novel, Pairs. Originally submitted for NaNoRenO 2017, Pairs follows the romantic ups and downs of two couples in the midst of an ongoing alien war between Earth and the invading Naian people. However, this game is unique in that it allows players to experience both perspectives of each of the two main pairings.  Like most NaNoRenO games, the team had a month to complete the game, so Pairs is a little on the short side.

A visual novel about walking a mile in another man’s shoes. On Earth. During an alien invasion.

An alien with sketchy morals craves a human’s heart.
A young man schemes to get his parents back from death.
A mutant tries to figure out where her heart lies with her childhood friend.
An illusionist struggles with his motivations for becoming a hero.

Four stories. Four people. A chance to understand them all.

A Sex Positive Fling with a Demon – Cute Demon Crashers Review

Cute Demon Crashers is a short 18+ sex positive visual novel from English game developers Sugar Script. The game was originally developed back in 2015 for the annual game jam, NaNoRenO, however due to time constraints Sugar Script was only able to complete two character routes (Mirari and Akki) by the time limit. But, the initial release was such a success that fans raised funds to assist Sugar Script with completing the game. Cute Demon Crashers features four romance interests (3 male, 1 female) and while the game does deal with sexual situations, players can choose to filter the “naughty bits” through censored gameplay. In addition to the filter, players can also choose to turn down any and all sexual situations without their choices having any effect on the progression of the story. The main purpose of the game is to promote a safe and open space for players to explore sex without feeling pressured.

That Which Binds Us Review

Mikomi Games’s That Which Binds Us asks a very simple question: What if the bonds of fate could be severed? What if you could cut off ties with family, friends, a jealous lover? Would you take it? For Evalise, a young woman trapped in a toxic relationship the choice is simple, cut off ties with her no good boyfriend and start over again. So, when a strange (and handsome) bail bondsman offers to erase the memories of her recently incarcerated boyfriend, Evalise reluctantly accepts his offer. With her newfound freedom, Evalise attempts to pick up the pieces of her life and finally start over again, and maybe find love along the way.

All she wanted was to get a bail bond for her troublesome boyfriend. That’s when she met Idris, a very special kind of bondsman. With a flick of a knife, he asked Evalise one confusing question- what if we could make him forget you?

Wishes in Pen: Chrysanthemums in August Demo Review

Afterthought Studios the folks behind the supernatural romance, Purfectly Ever After and the fantasy visual novel, When Our Journey Ends have decided to put their hat into the otome ring with the announcement of their new otome focused subsidiary, LunaniereThe first title in their new otome line is a supernatural fantasy currently on Kickstarter (they’ve already exceed their goal), Wishes in Pen: Chrysanthemums in August. An ambitious undertaking to say the least, Lunaniere has teamed up with game production company Sekai Project to bring their vision to life.

Recently, I sat down and gave the demo for Wishes in Pen: Chrysanthemums in August, a try and while I am impressed with the execution, I couldn’t help but feel like, Lunaniere is playing it safe with their debut title. Wishes in Pen is a fantasy historical romance otome in which a 20-something young woman is magically transported back in time to 1860’s Japan at the end of the Tokogawa Shogunate, following our heroine as she navigates her way through political and social unrest as the legendary Boshin War unfolds. This isn’t a new concept, not by a long shot, historical Japan has been the subject of many otome games, from mobile games like Voltage Inc.’s Sakura Amidst the Chaos and NTT Solmare’s Sengoku Darling, not to mention Two-Five’s Yo Jin Bo and Idea Factory’s Hakuoki franchise. Historical romance otome games are a dime a dozen and guaranteed some success, especially given the popularity of the Hakuoki series in the West.

Demo Basics

  • Available for Windows, Linux, Mac, and Android
  • Five Potential Love Interests
  • Demo Length: 30 mins- 1 hour (Prologue)

Indie VN developers, Vagrant Muffin already have two games under their belt, Fool’s Helper and Lucky Days, but, I’ve only played the former, and for what it’s worth it’s a pretty fun game. How To Woo an Otome Guy in Five Easy Steps!

Contrary to what some of you may believe playing otome games is hard work. Wooing 2D hotties is no easy feat, in some cases it’s harder than actually going out and getting a real lover… go figure. There’s a trick to it that can only be mastered through vigorous training and hours upon hours of in game practice. But, you dear readers are in luck! I did the hard work for you and compiled a list of five tried and true steps for anyone looking to bag the 2D hottie of their dreams! Yes, you read that right, I have taken it upon myself to write up a 5 step guide for wooing your otome game lover!

First, let me clarify, that this list is not meant to be used for wooing real life lovers… just, don’t, unless you’re cool with a little jail time. This is meant to be a tongue and cheek critique of some of the “unhealthy” methods used to woo love interests in otome games. As with any list, your mileage may vary, this is a very general list, so some tips may not work with every game or every character, just use your best judgement and of course have fun! This is meant to be fun…

Let’s Show Our Support for My Magical Demon Lover: A BL Dating Sim

Hey hey Heroes, Travelers, and Wandering NPCs, it’s been a LOOOOONG time since I wrote one of these (bear with me while I get back into the swing of things), but there’s a new crowd funding campaign over on Indiegogo for an upcoming BL dating sim, My Magical Demon Lover from Yaoi Press Games.

For those of you new, here, Let’s Show Our Support posts highlight current crowdfunding campaigns for indie games (usually VNs and OELVNs). I give you guys the basic rundown of the game and the perks of supporting the game’s campaign, as well as links to all the relevant game related pages and sites.

Y’all know how I feel about BL games, so when Yamila emailed me about the game, I knew I just had to whip something up! The Yaoi Press team is currently looking to raise funding to help with the current production schedule and to expand on the content of the game.

Spirit Parade- Hayato Review

Spirit Parade is a commercial supernatural romance English otome game from Lettuce Waltz. While the concept of the game is wholly original, many of the characters and themes featured in the game are taken from various Asian mythologies and legends. The game follows seventeen year old Nara (name changeable) a young girl who unwittingly stumbles upon a portal to the Spirit World. Unfortunately for our young heroine, the portal she used to enter the Spirit World won’t reopen until the end of a month long festival. After spending a month among the youkai and spirits, will Nara finally be able to return her old life in the Human World? Will she want to?

This game has been in development hell for about two years, and to be completely honest I thought Spirit Parade would never see the light of day. But, miracles do happen. Originally slated to be a full game release with five romanceable characters and full English voice acting, Lettuce Waltz decided to release the game per route (as routes are completed) without the voice acting (due to scheduling issues). While I’m fine with the per route release schedule, I will say I am a bit disappointed that the voice acting won’t be included in the initial route releases (though, you can still hear the voices in the demo version of the game) and the team has promised that an additional patch with voice acting will be included at a later date.

*There will be some spoilers…*

Blind Men- BL Game Review

Blind Men is a lighthearted spy fiction BL visual novel created by Man Eater Games. The game follows  Keegan, a young man who dreams of becoming a super villain just like his uncle. But, he still has a lot to learn, when his first heist goes awry he finds himself the unwilling ally of two spies each with their own hidden agendas.

This is a commercial release, coming in at a cool $3.99 USD and is playable on Windows and Mac operating systems. Blind Men is a rather short game with two love interests, a Russian spy, Sergei and Hunter, an American Special Agent. Despite it’s rather short run time, the game offers hours of fun and EIGHT unique endings!

Big thank you to the Man Eater Games team for sending me a review copy of the game!

I Slept With the Bartender?!: Irresistible Mistakes- Go Okubo Main Story

I misjudged Go in my first review of Irresistible Mistakes, I was fooled by yet another Voltage Inc. character bio, you’d think I’d have learned my lesson by now, but nope… Voltage has Go Okubo billed as a “sweetheart con artist”, which couldn’t have been further from the truth and it’s because of this misleading bio that I almost passed up on one of the best routes in the game.

Go bio

I went into this route expecting it to fail, but after playing that first chapter I was singing a completely different tune! Go blew Toshiaki’s route out of the water and I am not ashamed to admit that this is my new favorite (we’ll see how I feel after I play Toma’s route 😉 )! If you want a general overview of Irresistible Mistakes, click HERE, it’s covers the basic premise of the game and will include links to the other character reviews I will write for the game.

**Disclaimer: I DO NOT own any of the images used in this review, ALL images, screenshots, and characters belong to Voltage Inc. Please if you are interested in the game, download the game for free in the App Store or from Google Play and purchase the stories when they are available in your area.

Fangirl Moment: Roommates (Seok Young)

TGIF Heroes and Travelers, it’s Friday and that means it’s time for another Fangirl Moment, the series of posts where I spotlight media I think you guys should check out! This week I’m covering a Korean webcomic I discovered a little while ago, Roommates (aka Can’t Confess) by Seok Young, translated by Han. This is a fun comic about two friends that secretly harbor feelings for one another, things only get a bit more complicated when they suddenly become roommates… It’s just as awkward and hilarious as you’d imagine!

The series was originally published digitally by Mr. Blue back in 2015, but was eventually picked up by Spottoon.com for an English language release. This is a paid release, but you can read the first five chapters for free and by creating an account with the site you can also earn keys that will unlock additional episodes for free. Spottoon also has weekly/monthly free episode rotations, so if you plan accordingly, you can read the whole thing for free.

If you aren’t in the mood for BL, I highly recommend checking out one of my other Fangirl Moment posts (there are a ton to choose from) by clicking right, HERE, I cover a range of topics so I’m sure you’ll find something worthwhile over there!! For everyone else, let’s get this show on the road shall we?

Let’s Show Our Support for “Chess of Blades” A BL Visual Novel (Relaunched)!!

Edit (6/29): The Kickstarter for this game was successful at meeting its funding goal. The final funding amount was $6,738 with 234 backers! The game now has a tentative release date of October/November 2017!

I am super late with this post, I seriously meant to have it up weeks ago, but better late than never, am I right? Back in March Argent Games launched a Kickstarter campaign for their second BL visual novel Chess of Blades, however they were unable to raise the necessary funding by their April deadline… so, they took a step back to reevaluated the project and I am happy to say that they are giving Kickstarter another go!! So, if you missed out on supporting the first campaign now is the time to show your support!!

In the time between the first campaign and the current one, Argent Games has been hard at work bringing polishing Chess of Blades into something spectacular! New characters, improved artwork and more await in this upcoming BL title!

This time around, I’m spotlighting SweetChiel’s upcoming fantasy romance visual novel, Nusantara: Bermuda Triangle, the successor to their 2015 visual novel, Nusantara: Legend of the Winged Ones. While the game isn’t a sequel it does take place in the same universe as its predecessor, with a brand new heroine and adventure for players to enjoy!

Fans of the first game will be sure to love this new edition to the Nusantara universe, while new fans will definitely find something fun to add to their games collection.

Hey hey guys I’m back with yet another Kickstarter campaign! This time around, I’m spotlighting the upcoming dating sim, Two ScoopsThis game is a joint collaboration between Thumb Cramps and Pillowfight and follows an unnamed protagonist as she adjusts to her new job at a local ice cream shop and maybe find love along the way…

I am always excited to see games that break the mold with their characters and Two Scoops does that and more. With a diverse cast of characters and love interests from a wide range of backgrounds and genders, this promises to be fresh new title that is bound to appeal to a wide range of players.

[First Thoughts] Re:Birthday Song ~Koi o Utau Shinigami~

Re:Birthday Song ~Koi o Utau Shinigami ( Re:BIRTHDAY SONG~恋を唄う死神~) is a 2015 Japanese supernatural fantasy otome game, developed by Honeybee (the team behind the popular, Starry Sky series). While the game does not have an official English language release, earlier this year, estearisa released a full English patch of the game. Of course as it is with most patches, you’ll have to purchase a Japanese copy of the PC game (not the Vita port) in order to play it. I will say this now, it’s easier to find copies of the Vita version of the game, however, they won’t work with the patch. (Ebay has a few copies floating around though)

The game follows Kokoro a young girl who suddenly becomes the newest resident of the Netherworld, a place where souls with deep regrets go when they die, as she trains to become a full fledged shinigami. But, because our heroine isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed, she has to take supplementary lessons with a group of shinigami rejects…

I am notorious for never finishing games, so I picked up Re: Birthday on a whim, since my playthroughs of Period Cube have pretty much come to a standstill. So, I figured I’d play one route and go back to PC, what I didn’t expect was to be hit over the head with wave after wave of tear inducing emotions… OH MY GOD THE FEELS IN THIS GAME!! I’d played one of Honeybee’s other titles, Starry Sky in Spring ages ago and it’s like comparing apples and oranges!

Disclaimer: Screenshots used in this post were taken from the game and belong to Honeybee and the other respective developers of the game. Also, this game deals with some mature topics such as, but not limited to: death, suicide, and grief. Just a bit of a warning.

[First Thoughts] Period Cube ~Shackles of Amadaeus~

Period Cube ~Shackles of Amadaeus~ is a fantasy/RPG Japanese otome game developed by Otomate, based on the Drama CD series of the same name. The game was released in Japan in 2016 for the PS Vita, prior to it’s English language release by Aksys Games on April 28th. I’d heard some mixed reviews about this game from folks who played the Japanese version, but I like to give games the benefit of the doubt, especially when it comes to major localizations and releases (Norn9 does not count)… Period Cube is a commercial release, full retail: $39.99 USD on Amazon (affiliate link), which isn’t all that bad for what the game has to offer, especially when importing the Japanese version is double, if not triple that amount.

I seriously thought I’d be done with Period Cube by now, I honestly hoped that I would be, but life has been getting in the way of my gaming. I’m still working my way through the game ( a full review is still a ways off), but I’ve already cleared four routes and I have more than a few thoughts about the game… namely, WTF is with this MC?!! Plus, it’s good to get my ranting out of the way now… There may be some spoilers, but since I’m still playing through the game, there shouldn’t be any major plot reveals…

*Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links, I receive a small commission from Amazon every time you all purchase something using those links. Also all images belong to Aksys Games and Idea Factory!*

Hey hey guys I’m back with yet another Kickstarter campaign! This game is in the final stages of development and the fact that GB Patch is willing to release both a free and paid version of the game is awesome!

Hey hey guys I’m back with yet another Kickstarter campaign! This time around, I’m spotlighting Tamagobun’s upcoming psychological romance visual novel, Silent Voices. Unlike some of the other KS campaigns I have covered before, this will be a free to play release, however, based on what I’ve seen in the demo and the info on the KS page… this game should definitely get your support!

Let’s Show Our Support for False Elegy!

Edit (6/4): The Kickstarter for this game failed to achieve the necessary funds by the deadline. Production of the game is on hold until the developers feel that there is a viable market for it.

Hey, hey guys I’m back with yet another Kickstarter campaign! This time around, I’m spotlighting Team geNe6’s upcoming dark fantasy visual novel, False Elegy. I usually focus on otome games and GxB titles, but this game really stood out from the rest. False Elegy will appeal to a rather diverse audience drawing inspiration from both Western and Japanese media.

The game will be especially appealing to fans of the Fate/Stay series and Tokyo Ghoul which were influential to the developers during production.

Full Service- Demo Review

Double entendres and buff naked hunks abound in Herculion’s upcoming 18+ BL game, Full Service. The game follows Tomoki Nakamoto an overworked young office worker with a rather cynical outlook on life. When a stranger hands him a business card to the Full Service Spa, he encounters a colorful cast of characters that are more than happy to help Tomoki relieve a little “stress”. The game is currently on Kickstarter, so feel free to stop by and show your support, there are still a few days left in the campaign.  Full Service will be a fully voiced commercial release, and will be available for PC (Windows, Mac, Linux) and Android.

You know, I knew there was something familiar about this game, and after re-reading the Kickstarter page again, I discovered something that genuinely surprised me. Herculion isn’t a new group, Herculion is Black Monkey Pro reborn! I thought I was done with BMP after I reviewed the Bacchikoi Expansion Pack, but nope…they are the gift that just keeps on giving!

[NaNoRenO 2017] English Otome Game- The Crossroads

This is a name your own price game and is playable on Windows and Mac operating systems. The game is roughly an hour long, with two male love interests and a total of three endings.

But all is not what it seems at the house, both men are hiding something that will change her life forever.

*If you wish to download the game, do so, HERE!*

Since developers only have a month to create these games, I will be a bit more forgiving of these titles’s shortcomings, however, that doesn’t mean I won’t give you guys my honest opinion in each review.

Let’s Show Our Support for How to Fool a Liar King!

Edit (6/6): The Indiegogo campaign for this game failed to achieve the necessary funds by the deadline. Despite not reaching their goal, RoseVeRte will continue to work on the game and there tentative release date of September 2017!

Hey hey guys I’m back with yet another Crowdfunding campaign! This time around, I’m spotlighting RoseVeRte’s upcoming fantasy romance visual novel, How to Fool a Liar King, the sequel to their 2015 visual novel, How to Take Off Your MaskThe game takes place after the ending of the first game and features a new heroine, with a few familiar faces from the first game.

The first game was really cute and I’m curious to see what new secrets this sequel will reveal about Eroolia and it’s residents. Fans of the first game will be sure to love this new edition to the Eroolia saga and new fans will definitely find something fun to add to their games collection. How to Fool a Liar King is currently on Steam Greenlit, so cast your vote if you want to see a Steam release!

[Full Game Review] English Otome- Cinderella Phenomenon

Cinderella Phenomenon is a fantasy English language visual novel from indie game developers, Dicesuki. Like their previous game, Locked Heart, Cinderella Phenomenon borrows elements from common fairytales, but with a bit of a twist! Follow Lucette, a cold-hearted princess, who finds herself the victim of a witch’s curse. In order to break her curse Lucette must complete three good deeds, but that’s easier said than done for this selfish royal. This game is completely free and is available for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Steam!

At long last, I finally finished playing through Dicesuki’s newest visual novel Cinderella Phenomenon! It took me about two weeks, but I cleared all of the endings, its been awhile since I last cleared a game and now I remember why… it takes forever! But, this game was worth it!! I loved Locked Heart, but, Cinderella Phenomenon is on a whole different level!

Disclaimer: As always while the thoughts and opinions presented in this review are my own, the images and screenshots were created by Dicesuki Games. If you are interested in playing this game, download it from the Cinderella Phenomenon itch.io page or from Steam!!

After a night of heavy drinking, the MC discovers that she slept with the Accounts Planning Executive, Toshiaki Kijima. Unable to reconcile the Demon Executive with the sweet, loving man she shared a night of passion with, the MC initially dismisses the notion that Toshiaki was the one she’d slept with. But, when he sends her a text asking to meet up at the same bar, she realizes the idea might not be as far-fetched as she originally thought! Is there really more to this cool businessman than meets the eye? Or was that night just a beautiful delusion?

toshiaki profile.png

This was the route I was most looking forward to and it did not disappoint. This route was very different from Tachibana’s but in a good way. I can’t see how any of the other routes in the game are going to top this one, it was just so… PERFECT! If you want a general overview of Irresistible Mistakes, click HERE, it’s covers the basic premise of the game and will include links to the other character reviews I will write for the game.

Bacchikoi Expansion Pack- BL Game Review

Edit: In October of 2016 Black Monkey Pro disbanded, so Bacchikoi and all of their other content is no longer available for purchase, but feel free to still give this review a read!

So, I know some of you are wondering how in the world am I going to review an expansion pack, since it’s not really a game. Well, to that I say, *ahem* the Bacchikoi Expansion Pack is really just an overpriced fandisk, so I had no problem eking out a review and for what I paid for it, you better believe I’m writing a review! This game cost about as much as some real games…

I must be a glutton for punishment, because here I am talking about yet another Black Monkey Pro title, at least this time, it’s an expansion pack and not a full game… thank God! I don’t think I could actually put up with another BMP game, I just can’t… If you don’t remember how I felt about the previous Black Monkey Pro games I highly suggest reading my reviews for Sleepover and Bacchikoi and relive all the magic and wonder that is Black Monkey Pro, but forewarning those are NSFW reviews!

*Disclaimer: I don’t own the images used in this review, all CGs and screenshots belong to Black Monkey. Since this game is NSFW there will be some NSFW images after this point. I tried my best to hide some of the naughty bits, but… *shrugs* you’ve been warned!

[News] MangaGamer Anime Boston Game Announcements

mangagamer 1

This past weekend MangaGamer held a panel at Anime Boston where they made a few exciting game announcements, two of which I’m not gonna lie, I wasn’t really interested in, since I’m not really into the whole moe girl thing, but there was one game that really made my day!! MangaGamer is releasing another Boys Love title!!

But there’s nothing wrong with more games, so all of these announcements are a welcome treat!! Of course I’m sure these won’t be the only announcements we’ll be getting from MangaGamer this year, since they always reveal upcoming titles at each of the conventions they attend, so be on the look out for those by following them on twitter or by checking out their Announcement site!

So now that that’s out of the way, here are their Anime Boston game announcements!!

Chess of Blades- Demo Review

Chess of Blades is an upcoming commercial Boys Love (BL) mystery romance visual novel from indie English game developers Argent Games. When Rivian Varrison, the disillusioned son of a famous nobleman, is forced to attend a five day celebration for the King, he finds himself in danger when a crime is committed. With enemies around every corner, Rivian must tread carefully if he wants to make it home alive. Navigate the gilded world of the aristocracy and socialize with other party-goers in order to uncover their secrets and get to the bottom of the strange goings on in this imaginative period drama. Upon its release the game will be available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, but the the game was recently greenlit for steam. The demo covers  roughly an 30 mins to an hour of gameplay (it really depends on how fast you read).

I never get tired of saying this, but it does my heart good to see another BL game in development, since the genre is still pretty niche despite how large the fandom is… hopefully more developers will start producing even more BL titles in the future! *nudge nudge wink wink* Argent Games has been on a roll, it’s been a year, but Chess of Blades is their second title and it promises to be a thrilling addition to their lineup!

I Slept With My Boss?!: Irresistible Mistakes- Shunichiro Tachibana Main Story

After a night of heavy drinking, the MC discovers that she slept with her boss, Creative Director, Shunichiro Tachibana. Embarrassed and unable to remember the sexual encounter, she tries to put the whole affair behind her, but when she’s assigned to work with him on a high profile ad campaign, she finds that she can’t help but remember their night of drunken passion. Things start to look up for our heroine when Tachibana seemingly reciprocates her feelings, but is it love or is he just looking for a fling?

Tachibana profile.PNG

I was genuinely surprised by this route and by Tachibana, Voltage definitely made the one night stand premise seem way more sordid in the promotional material, than it was in the actual route. So, I was kind of expecting something along the lines of one of those cheesy soap operas my Nana likes to watch every day, but this wasn’t anything like that. If you want a general overview of Irresistible Mistakes, click HERE, it’s covers the basic premise of the game and will include links to the other character reviews I will write for the game.

[First Thoughts] Irresistible Mistakes

Voltage has been teasing us with this game for months and finally their newest app, Irresistible Mistakes is available for download!! In this game the MC has a one night stand with a complete stranger only to discover that her one time bed buddy happens to be one of her co-workers?! Voltage had me at one night stand! I have been so hyped for this game since the first time I saw the PV on Voltage’s official YouTube channel.

Irresistible Mistakes combines the office romance premise from games like Office Secrets and Our Two Bedroom Story, with the mature romance of In Your Arms Tonight and Finally in Love Again in order to create something that surpasses all of their other games up to this point!

**Disclaimer: I DO NOT own any of the images used in this review, ALL images, screenshots, and characters belong to Voltage Inc. Please if you are interested in the game, download the game for free in the App Store or from Google Play and purchase the stories when they are available in your area.  Continue reading “[First Thoughts] Irresistible Mistakes”

[First Thoughts] Backstage Pass

Alright, so this is another game that has been sitting in my backlog for way too long. But, since my office was closed for Spring Break  I figured now was a good time as ever to pull this game out of the abyss and give it a play… I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with stats raiser games, on one hand… nah, I’m not even going to try and sugar coat it! Stats raiser games can be a pain in the ass, plain and simple, and I have heard some wonderful stories about the stats raising in SakeVisual’s Backstage Pass, that made me very reluctant to start it…

Backstage Pass  was released twice, the first being the early access beta (2014), which is what I originally bought and never played, and the second being the final completed version of the game which was released August 2016 for PC (Windows, Linux, Mac) and Steam. The game features full English voice acting and at a cool $29.99, I’d say that’s a fair price to pay for the amount of content the game offers.

**Disclaimer: I DO NOT own any of the images used in this review, ALL images, screenshots, and characters belong to SakeVisual. Please if you are interested in the game, purchase the game either through the official site or through Steam!!

[Not Funded] Let’s Show Our Support for Chess of Blades A BL Visual Novel

Edit (4/5): The Kickstarter for this game failed to achieve the necessary funds by the deadline. Despite not reaching their goal, Argent Games will continue to work on the game!

Hey hey guys I know it’s been awhile since my last Kickstarter post, life has been throwing me curve balls left and right. But, I’m back again with another Kickstarter campaign, this time for the upcoming Boys Love romance visual novel, Chess of Blades from indie game developers, Argent Games!!

This is Argent Games’s second title in the span of a year and I for one am just happy to see developers willing to create more BL titles! There is definitely a market for BL games and Chess of Blades promises to be a welcome edition to the community! So, I’m definitely going to keep a close eye on this game’s progress.

The Guy I Like is a Rude Pop Star: Scandal in the Spotlight-Iori Enjo Main Story

Kicking off Megane Madness Month reviews is none other than the evil prince himself, Iori Enjo! This was the very first route that I ever played in Scandal in the Spotlight and the second route Voltage released. He just seemed like the better of the two options available at the time, and in hindsight, I don’t regret choosing to play Iori’s route before Kyohei’s route. In fact, if I’d played this route second, I don’t think I would have liked the guy as much as I did…

iori

Iori is the kind of guy that just grows on you… But, even I have to admit that most folks won’t like him very much. He’s not the easiest guy to love, and even I, a self proclaimed lover of cool intellectuals and ice queens, had a hard time swallowing some of the stuff he said throughout the route. But, I stuck with it and the pay off was worth it?!

**Disclaimer: This is a SPOILER FREE review, but if you don’t trust my word or you like being surprised, I also wrote a general full game review for Scandal in the Spotlight, HERE! I DO NOT own any of the images used in this review, ALL images, screenshots, and characters belong to Voltage Inc. Please if you are interested in the game, download it  for free in the App Store or from Google Play and purchase the stories when they are available in your area.

Falling for the Stoic Leader: Dangerous Seduction- Kentaro Inui

So while I was away at Katsucon, Voltage Inc released the final route in their newest (at least for the English market) app, Dangerous Seduction. I’m not gonna lie, but I am not a huge fan of the mature romance options like Kentaro Inui, so I went into this route not really expecting much…

Inui profile.png

Boy was I wrong! This fills in the gaps left by the other routes and we finally, FINALLY get to see the face behind the organization after the MC! We also get to learn a bit more about the MC’s father and his connection to the team… especially, their enigmatic leader, Kentaro Inui. If you want a general overview of Dangerous Seduction, click HERE, it’s covers the basic premise of the game and includes links to the other character reviews I wrote for the game.

**Disclaimer: I DO NOT own any of the images used in this review, ALL images, screenshots, and characters belong to Voltage Inc. Please if you are interested in the game, download the game for free in the App Store or from Google Play and purchase the stories when they are available in your area.
