Hey Blerdy Tribe, if you’ve been following me for awhile you are well aware that I am a lover of boys love media for everyone else… surprise, I’m a proud fujoshi! I won’t bore you here with the details of my hilarious introduction to the boys love genre, but if you’re curious definitely check out one of my earliest posts, Wait, Are those Guys Kissing for all the deets!
But, long story short, I enjoy most things BL from manga to anime, fanfics and yes, even games—and because this is a game review site I figured why not take a look at some of my fave indie BL games! Yes, indie. If I did a list of my fave Japanese BL games, it would just be a list full of Nitro+Chiral games and while I love them, that just seems a bit one-sided and variety is the spice of life, don’t ya think? And trust me there are tons of great titles out there to delight even the most seasoned fujoshi and fudanshi! It can be a bit daunting, so today I’m narrowing down the list to include a handful of my absolute favorite indie boys love games!

I don’t know about you dear readers, but hobbies can be pretty expensive! I can’t even begin to tell you how much I spent on manga just last month alone, but even that pales in comparison to the amount of games I buy each month. Most indie games are pretty cheap, anywhere from two bucks to $25, and some of the more mainstream releases can sometime take you back $40 or more and that can add up! Not everyone has the disposable income to buy every new game that comes out, and no that doesn’t mean I condone piracy, because NO.
But, rather than pirating a game, there are some free indie game options that are just as good if not more so than the bigger budget games on the market—and who doesn’t like saving a bit of cash and getting a quality game? So, whether you’re an avid gamer or someone who plays only a handful of games a year, here are some free games that’ll be a welcome addition to your gaming library.
While these games are free, throwing the devs a few bucks in tips is always appreciated~

I love video games, but even I get burned out on all the gameplay mechanics and strategy. Sometimes I just want to turn off my brain and play a game that makes me feel good—games where I can just sit back, relax, and enjoy some chill vibes. Sometimes we get so caught up on the destination that we don’t take the time to stop and enjoy the journey, so that got me thinking about some of the more wholesome visual novels out there. So I compiled a list of five games that are sure to brighten your day~

In the wake of KFC’s I Love You, Colonel Sanders! A Finger Lickin’ Good Dating Simulator announcement the internet is abuzz with delight at the prospect of dating the fast food chain’s chicken loving mascot. The concept is the brain child of UK based studio Psyop, and promises a unique gaming experience full of cooking battles, delicious finger lickin’ chicken recipes, and of course the chance to romance the Colonel himself.
While most of the internet is eagerly awaiting the latest parody dating sim, some in the otome community are worried the upcoming game will do more harm than good to an already niche genre. I’m always down for a good laugh, so I’ll probably check I Love You, Colonel Sanders! out when it’s released on September 24th on Steam.
However, this isn’t the first dating sim parody game (and it most likely won’t be the last). There are quite a few dating sims out there that are sure to have a few people scratching their heads, so of course I did what any sane person would do and compiled a few of them into a list… Your welcome.

I’ve written about the importance of representation in media quite a few times in the past, I even have a post series dedicated to talking about inclusion and diversity in nerd culture. Most recently, I wrote a post about diversity (or the lack there of) in otome games and after penning the post an indie developer friend of mine reached out to me about the topic. We had an awesome discussion about the depiction of people of color in visual novels and the importance of wholesome representation. She even gave me some insight into the difficulties some content creators have when crafting characters of color in their games, a perspective I hadn’t considered. I’ve seen quite a few polls and surveys floating around about the content of western otome games and visual novels, many of which have sections dedicated to gauging player interests in diverse characters.
I love that there is an open dialogue about diversity in games, especially in romance themed games since there is a noticeable disparity in the number of otome games that feature black and brown characters in major roles. However, I’ve heard through the grapevine that there are a handful of developers that have been saying that they don’t include darker skinned characters in their games because they “look bad” or aren’t as attractive as non black and brown characters. Some people have stated that it’s harder to create characters with darker complexions using the anime art style common in otome games… and hearing that is really heartbreaking. On some level, I feel like this is just a carryover of colorism, and the notion that dark skinned individuals are not as attractive as lighter skinned individuals (which is not the case at all). But, on other levels, it’s less an issue with darker characters looking bad and more a case of an artist needing more experience depicting characters of color.
There is a demand for more diverse games, heck, this past weekend someone used the search term ‘otome games black girl friendly’ to get to my site and I’m gonna be honest with you guys, it made my whole weekend! As more people start playing otome games (and romance visual novels) the demand for more inclusive characters and narratives will only rise and those who stay stuck in their ways are really limiting themselves. So, for the person that searched for black girl friendly otome games and for the folks that think “darker characters look bad” here are a few Melanin Friendly Otome Games and Visual Novels!!

Voltage Inc has certainly come up with so many amazing games, but, there are some that just don’t quite hit the mark. I don’t hate them per se, they’re just not the best. So this isn’t so much a list of games that I hate, but more a list of games that could be better. So this was a hard list to come up with, I enjoy different aspects of each and every Voltage Inc game for different reasons. These games are on here because of my feelings about the entire game, and in no way a reflection of the individual characters in the game. So in short, I may like certain characters in each of the games on the list, but the overall game not so much.
Before you all start grabbing your torches and pitchforks, this list is purely my opinion…You are more than welcome to agree or disagree with me if you want, by all means leave a comment and suggest better “worst” games. So without further ado here we go: My Top 5 “Worst” Voltage Inc Games.
