Hey Hey Heroes, Travelers, and NPCs, out there it’s Monday, and that means another Melanin Monday post!! I know its been awhile since my last Melanin Monday post (I’ve been slacking off), but, for those of you just joining the party, here’s a little refresher. Melanin Monday is a bi-weekly post series that I started for Black History Month, where I talk about Black and Brown skinned characters in anime, manga, video games, etc., but you guys loved it so much I decided to continue it!
So, in this week’s Melanin Monday post, I wanted to talk about the Oscars… Yeah, I know, I’m not the only one talking about the Oscars, everybody is talking about the Oscars right now. But, after not one but two Black-led superhero films managed to not only snag quite a few Oscar nominations, but, also WIN awards… well, let’s just say that is grounds for celebration. But, that wasn’t all, the 2019 Oscars was a triumph for women and people of color as well, with films like Roma and BlackKklansman snagging quite a few awards last night.

If you happened to stumble upon this post by accident, this will be the last spoiler warning before I start my rant… I will not apologize to anyone that knowingly reads beyond this point and gets spoiled for Infinity War, that’s on you boo.\
So I joined droves of moviegoers in seeing one of the most anticipated superhero films to come out this year, Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War. Ten years of planning and 19 films have lead to this sort of final act in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and don’t get me wrong, I absolutely loved Infinity War, it had everything I could ask for in a superhero film: all the heroes (minus Hawkeye and AntMan, they got put on the bus for this one), action, suspense, witty banter, and one of the biggest emotional sucker punches so far this year. It was an almost perfect film and I applaud Marvel (read: Disney) for pulling it off, if you’d asked me back in 2004 if I thought Marvel would have the monopoly on superhero films, I’d have probably laughed in your face and bopped you on the head with my homemade wand and pulled off on the Hogwarts Express back to Harry Potter-ville.

TGIF! Here we are again with another Fangirl Friday! This week I am super late… like a whole day late with my Fangirl Friday post, though technically it’s still Friday where I live. But, that’s besides the point, the reason I’m so late with this post is because I decided that I wanted to write about something super current. For this week’s post, I’m covering the newest film in the MCU lineup, Doctor Strange!!
I had no idea what to expect when I walked into the theater, because aside from seeing one Doctor Strange animated film on Cartoon Network years ago, I don’t know much about the guy… However, that didn’t stop me from getting a ticket to the film in 3D…

TGIF! Here we are again with another Fangirl Friday! This week I’m covering a one of my favorite animated films. I’m talking about the critically acclaimed 2001 animated film, Spirited Away (Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi).
So what brought on this post? Well I recently watched the film again this past weekend and all of the memories just came flowing back! I just had to write about… it would be criminal not to have a post about this amazing film on my blog!

TGIF! Here we are again with another Fangirl Friday! This week I’m going to talk about a movie I saw with a friend a few weeks ago! I meant to write this post earlier, but one thing lead to another…I’m making excuses, today’s post is all about the third and final film in the Bridget Jones trilogy, Bridget Jones’s Baby!
Was this the best movie I’ve ever seen? Nope. Was this the best film of the year? Absolutely not! Was this even the best film in the trilogy? Not really. But, did I giggle like a schoolgirl when Colin Firth appeared on screen for the first time? You bet I did!
So why am I writing about this? Well, Bridget and her shenanigans (along with a healthy amount of Ben and Jerry’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough ice cream) have gotten me through some tough times in the past. I have fond memories of the first film (the second not so much) and to this day, I still watch the first film whenever I’m feeling especially down about something. So, when I heard that there was going to be a third and final film in the series, I couldn’t wait to buy my ticket!
*This post will contain some spoilers for the film, so proceed with caution!*

TGIF! Here we are again with another Fangirl Friday, where I write about my absolute favorite anime, manga, dramas, webcomics, books….whatever! This week I’m taking it back a little to one of the first manga to make me actually cry, Hotarubi no Mori e (lit. Into the Forest of Fireflies’ Light).
Hotarubi no Mori e is a 2002 manga oneshot (also apart of a 2003 tankobon of the same name) written by Yuki Midorikawa, the author behind Natsume’s Book of Friends. The story follows a young girl, Hotaru, and her friendship with a mysterious masked man, Gin, who lives in the woods outside of her grandfather’s home. She meets Gin at the age of six and quickly learns that Gin is not a normal man, but a supernatural being. He warns her that she must never touch him or else he will disappear forever. She promises not to touch him and they strike up a summer friendship that spans years. But, as the years pass and Hotaru matures, her feelings grow into love, and both struggle with the limitations of not being able to touch.

So I may have mentioned this before, but the guy I was seeing…and kind of hoping to marry broke up with me not too long ago. So I’m kind of somewhere between sad and bitter.
I guess that is kind of how I feel… (found somewhere on Pinterest)
So you may be asking yourself… “What do I do with all this free time?” You may not be ready to jump out into the dating scene, nor do you want to play the role of the third wheel to all of your stable coupled friends, so you find yourself at home browsing Netflix to distract yourself. A bleak outlook for some, but losing yourself in a couple of good movies or TV series that you were too busy to see when you were coupled up, may be just the time waster you need right now. And boy does Netflix deliver…at least right now it does…I’m sure that within a month or so some of these will have been removed (in that case try Hulu or Amazon Prime)…

Let me first say that I absolutely love the film and the book, but if I had to choose I loved the book more. I will admit that I saw the movie first…and while I’m confessing sins…I saw it dubbed, so I’m more accustomed to Christian Bales, than I am to Takuya Kimura (but I will admit he was the sexier Howl :D) But I digress…there are several differences between the novel and the film…for one the film oozes all the classic Miyazaki tropes, which I will get into more later in the post…so here we go!
Witch of the Waste
So again…*disclaimer* I saw the movie first…
So in the beginning, both the book and the movie agree: The Witch of the Waste is the main antagonist, but really that’s kind of Howl’s fault. About a year before the story Howl (the serial philanderer) thinking she’s hot stuff, pursues her, but for some reason or another changes his mind and dumps her. This (rightly so) pisses the Witch off to the point where she makes it her mission to find Howl and make him her’s forever and always. And here my friends is where the similarities end! [SPOILERS AHEAD…no seriously…spoilers…like really real spoilers…]
