[First Thoughts] Bad Boys Do It Better

Edit: So, I seriously considered editing this post, which I wrote after only playing the prologue, as my opinion of the game has since changed. But, I kind of like the feel of this post, so in the end I didn’t change a thing.

So, Voltage must love high school romances, because they keep cranking these bad boys out like there aren’t any other otoge premises to choose from. Do I sound bitter, well you bet I’m bitter…I am so tired of high school romances, I thought we were getting somewhere with After School Affairs. At least in that game you play as a high school teacher, but, no, Voltage Inc is taking us back to school with their newest title, Bad Boys Do It Better!

Bad Boys Do it Better

What’s with all the highlights?

As you can no doubt tell from my glowing introduction, I am not overly excited about this game. In fact I’m expecting to be pleasantly disappointed, yet again by yet another foray into the rose colored spring time of youth, but I’ve been surprised by Voltage before, so we’ll see…So without further ado, lets get this ball rolling!

**Disclaimer: I DO NOT own any of the images used in this review, ALL images, screenshots, and characters belong to Voltage Inc. Please if you are interested in the game, download the game for free in the App Store or from Google Play and purchase the stories when they are available in your area.**

Fangirl Moment: Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart

TGIF! Here we are again with another Fangirl Friday! This week I’m gonna hit you guys in the gut with a French animated film that showed up on my Netflix homepage…Have you ever watched something so strange and confusing that you couldn’t help but fall in love with it’s awkwardness? Well that’s what happened when I first watched the animated film, Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart. It was a surreal musical experience that I simply won’t soon forget, and I’ll admit I teared up at the end too.

Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart (La Mécanique du cœur) is a 2014 animated film, which follows a young man, Jack (voiced by Mathias Malzieu) who was born on the coldest day of the year. Because of this he was born with a frozen heart, so a local midwife/witch replaced his dead heart with a small cuckoo-clock. While the procedure did save his life the midwife, Madeleine, warns young Jack there are three rules that he must obey in order to ensure the longevity of his artificial heart.

[Full Game Review] English Otome- Seduce Me 2: The Demon War

Seduce Me 2: The Demon War, like its predecessor, is a fully voiced, supernatural romance visual novel produced by Seraphim Entertainment and created by Michaela Laws. The original voice cast is back and in full form, their vocal talents shine as they give their all in a series of heart wrenching and emotional performances. In addition to the stellar voice cast, Seduce Me 2 (SM2) boasts a few new features which work together to bring the wonderful story started in Seduce Me (SM) to a satisfying and beautiful close. The five incubi and Diana the succubus are back, each with their own routes, however unlike SM, the romance routes feature both Good Endings and Bad Endings. The additional branching storyline, drills home the game’s message of fate and the burden choices have on destiny. As you play the choices become more difficult, as the player is forced to decide whether to selfishly cling to their love for their incubi or to secede their happiness for the greater good. In the end no matter what you choose, someone has to suffer. This game features some difficult topics, which may not be suitable for some audiences.

Like with the first game all sex scenes are optional. You can purchase the game on itch.io, HERE or on Steam, HERE.

**So the disclaimer… I don’t own these images or characters, they belong to Michaela Laws and Seraphim Entertainment. On that note, there will be some semi-NSFW images in this post, but no private areas will be shown, just some really suggestive angles. The thoughts and opinions presented in this post are my own, it’s fine if you don’t agree with me, but be respectful when commenting (I’m open to all opinions here).

[Sub Story] Astoria Fates Kiss- Private Lies

So this is a special post just for you guys, before I dive into Hydra’s Season 2 stories! So, instead of a full blown review, I’m going to cover Hydra’s first sub story, Private Lies. This story takes place shortly after the events of Hydra’s season one main stories and essentially takes the place of a typical epilogue. The story is three chapters long and comes with it’s own special image.

Forbidden Romance: Dangerous Relationship- Kei Toyonaga

Disclaimer: I am going to warn ya’ll in advance, this review is my opinion feel free to disagree with me if you will… But keep it civil, I have no patience for trolls (consider yourself warned). Also this post will contain some strong language, do with it what you will.

I like to think of myself as a conscientious buyer, when it comes to games.  I have a three step process that I use to vet my games before purchasing, and this is all games (indie or otherwise)!

  1. I look the game up and read the description. If I like the premise I move on to Step 2
  2. Read reviews and comments. Usually a quick run through of the comments in the App Store or on Google Play will suffice. But, if I notice a high concentration of troll posts, I might expand my search to blog reviews or gaming review sites. If the reviews seem positive I move on to Step 3
  3. I then download the game and play through the free trial and or prologue. If I am still interested at this point, this is the point in which I actually make a purchase.

This process has served me well in the past, hell, I’d go so far as to say it’s damn near fool proof. If I follow all of these steps, I avoid wasting money on shitty games, even when I don’t use this process it’s still extremely rare for me to accidentally buy a crappy game. Like I said, I pride myself in my ability to sniff out shit games, but I am human and I have been known to slip up….this was one of those times…Before I continue on to the actual review, I want to talk about my critiques of games, for reference, because I assure you this game deserves all the rage I’m about to type out in this review.

Fangirl Moment: Blue Morning

TGIF! Here we are again with another Fangirl Friday! This week I’m doing something for all of my BL/Yaoi Fangirls out there…Today I’m going to cover the yaoi manga, Blue Morning. This post will be SAFE FOR WORK…There will be absolutely NO NSFW images in this post, so rejoice (or curse my name), this post can be read in public without consequence!

I’ve said this before, but it is extremely rare that I pick up an ongoing series. They are just more trouble than they’re worth, and I end up forgetting about them anyway due to huge gaps between updates. In order for me to even think about picking up an ongoing series, the plot has to be on point, something that I won’t easily forget between releases… But the true test of an ongoing series is whether or not I will also spend money on it! I don’t throw my money around lightly, so I certainly won’t bother buying a manga series until it’s complete…  I have been burned one too many times in the past (looking at you Tokyopop), so I am extremely picky about which manga series I buy. So for me to not just read an ongoing series, but go so far as to purchase it as well, says a great deal about my opinion of the series…. I have made that exception only four times to date, and Blue Morning was one of them!

The Cyborg Executive Who Stole My Heart: My Wedding and the 7 Rings-Seiichirou Hayami

Sorry, it’s taken me awhile, but this character was chosen by you guys about four weeks ago during that week’s poll. Well I saw the votes and I’m not one to disappoint, so here’s my review of Seiichirou Hayami’s route in My Wedding and the 7 Rings!

I didn’t know what to expect from this route going in, because not much is known about Sei at this point in the game. In the other routes, he is merely the facilitator of the late CEOs will, and the man in charge of the Marriage Program. He mostly takes on an advisory role, assisting the MC as she completes the program, though he has been known to create minor obstacles for the MC and her chosen fiance as well. Despite his role in the marriage game, very little is known about Sei. At work he is one of the top executives of the Sanno Corporation, having worked under the former CEO, his skills are second to none. But, his emotionless disposition has lead to him being referred to as a cyborg among his peers.

From Consciousness to Reality: DRAMAtical Murder-Ren Review & Final Thoughts on DRAMAtical Murder

First, I can’t believe that I’m finally done with this game! DRAMAtical Murder was the first game I reviewed on this blog and it has taken me nine whole months to get through it all. This is a huge achievement for me, I usually play one route and never touch the game again. I have game commitment issues lol…. So, unlike the other reviews I plan on keeping this as short as possible, so I can fit in my overall final thoughts on the game at the end, besides I pretty much got all my ranting out in the Tumblr live blog. I will try to keep the spoilers to a minimum, but this is the True canon route of the game, so that might be easier said than done. So without further ado, the last DMMd route, here’s Ren!

From Machine to Man: DRAMAtical Murder- Clear Review

I was feeling pretty low after finishing Mink’s route, in fact, I completely lost all desire to even finish this game at all….but after taking a few days away from DMMd, I gained some of my fighting spirit back. So, after seeing Clear’s antics in the common route, I was expecting this to be one of the more light-hearted routes of the game (which I seriously needed after finishing Mink’s route). Clear is the most upbeat of the available love interests, and his route is full of hilariously over the top moments. I think I laughed myself silly during the first half of the route, but suddenly without me noticing, Clear’s route did a complete 180. There is so much more to Clear than meets the eye, and I never expected this route to be the most emotional and heart-wrenching route of the game.

clear

Clear is a mysterious character, as you can see from his above character profile, very little is known about him at the beginning of the game. He is a very energetic and friendly, but his odd mannerisms often confuse those around him. He’s like a cute puppy following the others around as they plan their assault on Toue.

**Disclaimer: I don’t own these images, they belong to Nitro+chiral…and this goes without saying, but there will be minor SPOILERS under the cut… Also, there is a NSFW image in this post (it’s rather tame by BL standards, though) you have been warned*

The Silent Butler Who Stole My Heart: Butler Until Midnight- Kyo Aizawa

My writer’s block is finally over!!! Yes, now I can finally get down to business, and defeat the Huns I mean finally bang out some more reviews…I finally had time for another Voltage route and this time it’s one that you all voted on!! It’s taken me awhile, but this character was chosen by you guys about four weeks ago during that week’s poll. Well I listened, and I couldn’t have been more pleased with this choice, give yourselves a pat on the back this was and excellent route.

Kyo InfoCard.PNGI have been wanting to play this route for some time now, yet I never could find the time to. Ever since I saw his blank, expressionless face in the prologue, I knew that I just had to play his route and learn the reason behind it. The title of  cool loner does not do him justice, there is so much emotion beneath his blank stare if you only take the time to look.

[Full Game Review] English Otome-Seduce Me

This is one of those games that I absolutely enjoyed playing, but never really got around to writing a review for…So, now that I have some free time and in honor of the sequel coming out on May 20th on Steam, (I got the game from itch.io, so I have to wait until June 20th) I decided to go back and play the game that started it all! So whether you’ve already played this game and are in need of a refresher before Seduce Me 2 is released, or someone new to the game, you’ve definitely come to the right place!

Released in 2015, Seduce Me is a fully voiced PC English visual novel, produced by Seraphim Entertainment and created by Michaela Laws.  First, I can’t tell you how awesome and rare it is for a FREE indie English otome game like Seduce Me to have a full voice cast…and for said voice cast to be good too! It’s like winning the lotto right after you lose your job, not necessarily impossible, but unlikely as hell! So big props to Seraphim and Michaela for pulling this off with the help of their backers on Kickstarter, some out of pocket money, and a whole helluva lot of determination!

Fangirl Moment: Mirai Sentai Timeranger

TGIF and Happy Friday the 13th! Here we are again with another Fangirl Friday! This week I’m doing something that’s one part childhood nostalgia and one part full blown otaku… The Super Sentai Series!

For those of you unfamiliar with the Super Sentai series,  here’s a brief overview… Super Sentai is the name of a long running Japanese superhero themed television series, following the exploits of the Super Sentai who protect the balance between good and evil. Teams members typically wear different colored suits and have a corresponding theme tied to their powers. Teams usually consists of five members, but there have been smaller teams. The Super Sentai use an arsenal of weapons to take down baddies, but what they are most known for are their giant Mecha, which they use to battle enemies, usually during their final showdowns! Oh yeah…and did I mention that the Super Sentai series is the inspiration for the Power Rangers? No, maybe I should have started off with that… Currently there are 40 different Super Sentai shows.

From Bondage to Freedom: DRAMAtical Murder- Mink Review

I was not looking forward to this route, in fact I was planning on skipping Mink’s route all together. But, in order to unlock Ren’s route, I had to complete the Good Ending for Koujaku, Noiz, Clear and Mink… So, I had no choice but to suffer through it. Mink is perhaps my least favorite route of the game, even before I played it, I wasn’t very interested in Mink as a “love interest”. Even now after playing through his entire story, I’m still not a fan.

2016-05-04 (85)

Mink is the leader of the prison Rhyme team Scratch, and to be honest that’s all that anyone really knows about him. He shares little with his fellow team members, and has a tendency to speak with his fists. But, beneath his stoic exterior lies a complex character whose emotions run much deeper than anyone around him could ever imagine. I was surprised by this route, I definitely got to see a different side of Mink than I expected.

**Disclaimer: I don’t own these images, they belong to Nitro+chiral…and this goes without saying, but there will be minor SPOILERS under the cut… For your sanity and my own, there will be none of the rapey or especially violent CGs in this post…You’re welcome!*

From Pain to Pleasure: DRAMAtical Murder- Noiz Review

It has really been a long time since I last picked up this game. DRAMAtical Murder and the Koujaku reviews were my first ever reviews on this blog, and here I am almost seven months later writing another one. Boy has the time flown by…my only hope is that I’ve improved some since those first reviews (at least I think I have). I have since written an updated review of DRAMAtical Murder, which can be found, HERE. After muddling through Koujaku’s route, I set my sights on Noiz… But, I was so overwhelmed by how dull Koujaku’s route was that I put DMMd on the back burner until I could forget about it. Well it took seven months, and here I am finally ready to give DMMd another shot!

Noiz chara card.png

I did not expect to love this route as much as I did, but oh boy did I ever! Noiz is hands down my favorite route of the game! Noiz is the creep who drive by Rhymes Aoba in the common route. At first his blunt attitude rubbed me the wrong way, but the more I played, the more I began to like this socially awkward bunny!

**Disclaimer: I don’t own these images, they belong to Nitro+chiral…and this goes without saying, but there will be some character related spoilers under the cut and one or two NSFW images in this post (censored) you have been warned**

Last Window: The Secret of Cape West Game Review

A thief crosses a dark room, his prize a lone safe…A mysterious woman wearing a hat and sunglasses leaves a soon to be demolished apartment building…A man with no job returns to the only place he calls home…and a letter about long ago secrets.

So much has changed since that fateful trip to Hotel Dusk, a year ago. For Kyle Hyde the past never seems to stay in the past. The past and the present collide as the secrets of Cape West hit close to home for our former gumshoe turned salesman.

last window cape west.png

Last Window: The Secret of Cape West is a 2010 Nintendo DS single-player adventure visual novel and the final game produced by the now defunct company, Cing. Because of Cing filing bankruptcy, the game was not released for the North American market. Like its predecessor, Hotel Dusk, Last Window is played by holding the DS system sideways like a book.

Fangirl Moment: Banana Fish

TGIF! Here we are again with another Fangirl Friday! This week I’m reviewing a genre fluid manga…technically it’s a shojo manga, but you wouldn’t think it to read it. This manga has everything, gang battles, political deals, mysterious drugs, romance (?), drama, angst, tragedy, and to tie it all up, subtle (like really subtle) BL undertones. The manga I’m about to cover is my favorite series of all time. No matter how much time passes, and no matter how many manga I read, nothing has even come close to it! The series is licensed in English by Viz, but it is currently out of print! I have searched conventions, old book stores and online…and I still don’t have the whole series yet….soon though!

Banana Fish, a 19 volume classic manga series by Akimi Yoshida, was released between 1985 and 1994. The series was immensely popular in Japan, spawning three spin-off stories: Private Opinion, Angel Eyes, and The Garden with Holy Light. The musician, Gackt loved this manga so much that he wrote a song about it entitled Asrun (Aslan) Dream (it’s really good too)! This manga really took me by surprise, the artwork while rough at first really grew on me, and the plot…wow…this is not your typical shojo manga, it transcends genre labels! While this post will be Safe for Work, I do need to clarify that this manga does have some content that may not be suitable for some readers. However, none of said content takes away from the plot in any way, in fact it only enhances it!

Trigger warnings: child prostitution, rape/forced sexual situations, coarse language, death

Hotel Dusk: Room 215 released in Japan as Wish Room: Angel’s Memory is a 2007 Nintendo DS single-player adventure visual novel developed by the creators of Another Code: Two Memories (aka Trace Memories in NA) and now defunct company, Cing. It was released as part of the Touch Generation of DS games, which were geared towards attracting non traditional gamers.  Unlike typical DS and 3DS games, Hotel Dusk is played by holding the DS system sideways like a book.

The Guy I Like is a Cancer: Starry Sky in Spring- Suzuya Review

So of all the love interests in this game, Suzuya was the one that I was looking forward to the least. And after my lukewarm feelings about Kanata and Yoh, I wasn’t really expecting much. Suzuya is the most mature guy in the group and designated Mama Hen. While the others are bickering like children, he’s the one who acts as mediator.

2016-04-26 (12)

Unlike, Yoh and Kanata, who wear their hearts on their sleeves, Suzuya’s true thoughts and feelings are often shrouded in mystery. He was definitely my surprise favorite of the game.

Disclaimer: I don’t own these images, they belong to Honeybee, while the translation of the patch was done by OGE…and this goes without saying, but there will be SPOILERS under the cut…

Continue reading “The Guy I Like is a Cancer: Starry Sky in Spring- Suzuya Review”

The Guy I Like is a Pisces: Starry Sky in Spring- Kanata Review

So, for my second route of the game I chose to pursue Kanata, he was probably the character I was looking forward to the most. I love tsundere characters, I find their hot/cold personalities cute, they are my otoge bias. Kanata was everything you’d expect from a tsundere, it’s obvious that he is in love with Tsukiko, but he keeps his feelings hidden…though to be honest, the only person really fooled by his act is Tsukiko.

2016-04-24 (21)

I definitely enjoyed Kanata’s route more than I did Yoh’s, maybe its because I felt bad for the guy. He’s been in love with the same girl for years, but she is too oblivious to notice! Then when she does acknowledge his feelings, she does her best to deny them, friend zoning him in the process.

Disclaimer: I don’t own these images, they belong to Honeybee, while the patch translation was provided by OGE…and this goes without saying, but there will be SPOILERS under the cut…

The Guy I Like is a Capricorn: Starry Sky in Spring- Yoh Review

A lot has changed since my first playthrough of Starry Sky in Spring back in 2013. Not only am I older, but my opinion of high school romance otoge has changed considerably. I’ve grown disillusioned with the cutesy, sugary sweet romance premise that tends to plague otoges with high school settings. So, you can imagine that this was a slow go for me…a really slow go.

2016-04-24 (18).png

Like the first time I played the game, I chose Yoh Tomoe as the first love interest, because he was the character that left the biggest impression on me. Again, let me stress that my opinion has changed significantly since the first time that I played this game. While I liked the game overall, I feel like the individual routes were predictable and full of fluff moments. I enjoyed Yoh’s characterization in the game, but there were a few moments when I found myself rolling my eyes at the lets be friends forever theme.

Disclaimer: I don’t own these images, they belong to Honeybee, while the translation of the patch was done by OGE…and this goes without saying, but there will be SPOILERS under the cut…

Fangirl Moment: Lie to Me

TGIF! Here we are again with another Fangirl Friday! So I have a confession to make, I had a really hard time coming up with a topic for this week’s Fangirl Moment post. There was so much going on with school that I almost cancelled this week’s post altogether…but then it came to me…K-drama…I could write about another K-drama. So here we are covering another one of my favorite K-dramas: Lie to Me!

The show follows a civil servant, Gong Ah-jung (played by Yoon Eun-hye), who works in the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. One day at the hairdresser’s she runs into her high school frenemy, who brags about her perfect life and husband. Not wanting to be shown up, Ah-jung lies and says that she too is happily married to an amazingly handsome and rich man. But the little white lie takes on a life of its own, spreading beyond Ah-jung and her friends to the world of elite businessmen. Soon everyone seems to think that Ah-jung is the wife of a prominent young hotel owner, Hyun Ki-joon (played by the dreamy Kang Ji-hwan).

Fangirl Moment: Ten Count

TGIF! Here we are again with another Fangirl Friday! This week I’m doing something for all of my BL/Yaoi Fangirls out there…Today I’m going to cover the yaoi manga, Ten Count. This post will be SAFE FOR WORK…There will be absolutely NO NSFW images in this post, so rejoice (or curse my name), this post can be read in public without consequence!

Let me preface this by saying, I generally don’t start ongoing series, I hate waiting on updates. But, I have made a few exceptions in the past…very few. In order for me to go against my no ongoing series code, the series in question better be damn good; this manga is that good!

Ten Count is an ongoing (currently 4 volume) yaoi series by Takarai Rihito, the author being Seven Days and Only the Flower Knows. The series follows the relationship between mysophobic secretary Shirotani Tadaomi and clinic counselor Kurose. While the relationship between the two men is essential to the plot, a lot more focus is put on Shirotani’s mysophobia. If you don’t know, mysophobia is a pathological fear of contamination and germs [Wiki].

Mini Review: DRAMAtical Murder

This is an exciting post for me, not only is this My 100th Post, but DRAMAtical Murder was the first game I ever reviewed on this blog! So this post is a really special post! I actually went back and looked at my review from back then, and I can say with confidence that I’ve actually gotten better at writing reviews since then. So here I am seven months later and I’m finally getting back to the game that started it all. Hopefully, I can do this game justice by writing a proper review…

DRAMAtical Murder is a 2012 Nitro+chiral sci-fi boys love visual novel. If you are familiar with Nitro+chiral’s other works, you’ll know that they have a flair for “dramatic” and “gruesome” endings, so consider yourself warned. I first found out about this game while watching a Let’s Play for Hatoful Boyfriend (talk about two different worlds), but during the video someone suggested that the next “Let’s Play” should be DMMD. No one else seemed to know what game they were talking about and even the person who’d suggested it was pretty vague on the concept. The only thing anyone knew for sure, was that it was a BL visual novel and that the bad endings were bloody.

Fangirl Moment: Flowers and Bees

Flowers and Bees, also known as Hana to Mitsubachi by Anno Moyoco is a 7 volume slice of life, comedy-romance manga and one of my favorite manga series of all time! I was originally introduced to this manga by a friend of mine back in high school. She lent me all of the volumes that she had (at the time the first five), it took me less than a week to read through them all. So i quickly ran back to get the remaining two volumes only to discover that she didn’t have them! I quickly turned to the internet for scans, but there aren’t any! After a brief moment of dispair,  I convinced my mother to order the remaining volumes from Barnes and Noble. The series is out of print…so it was a while before she could even track down the remaining volumes, hell it took me forever to get the first five volumes for myself!

Released in 2000, Flowers and Bees, follows ordinary high school student Komatsu, a hapless underdog in the most basic and literal sense. Komatsu is the guy that girls ignore or laugh at, especially the school it-girl, Sakura, who goes out of her way to make his life a living hell. Our poor hero is the guy that just can’t catch a break no matter what he does. So, tired of living a life of ambiguity, Komatsu vows to change his luck around and become a heartthrob girls like Sakura will be tripping over themselves to get with… He seeks the advice of the Devil Sisters Kyoko and Harumi, who submit him to their own special torture training so that he too can become a Beautiful Man. He puts himself to all manner of treatments and make overs just so he can pick up girls and experience the sweet life. Follow Komatsu as he learns about a world of desperate housewives, sadistic women, love hotels, as he stumbles and fumbles his way towards love and self acceptance.

The Gentlemanly Teacher Who Stole My Heart: After School Affairs-Hidetaka Sera

Available: Google Play | App Store | Amazon App Store

Let me preface this review by saying that I’m not  a fan of the gentlemanly types. I dunno, there’s something wrong about the perfect characters that just rubs me the wrong way. I try to like them, but they can be too perfect at times…Initially this was that kind of story in fact for the first few chapters I kept giving this route the never ending side eye of doom. Especially with all the not so subtle hints about forbidden romance…Really Voltage? Romeo and Juliet? Come on, you can do better than that!

But, after that…Mr. Sera’s route took an unexpected turn and I loved it! The plot twist was “unexpected”, but welcome! Hidetaka is downright princely, with a winning smile and dashing good looks. On top of that he’s a dedicated English teacher and a famous translator too, but one can’t help but wonder if there is something sinister behind that sweet smile of his…

*Disclaimer: I don’t own these images, they belong to Voltage…and this goes without saying, but there may be slight SPOILERS under the cut…*

The Cold IT Executive Who Stole My Heart: My Wedding and the 7 Rings-Kai Fujisawa

*In light of the incidents on Tumblr…I’m pushing up my timeline and publishing this a week earlier than originally planned*

I finally managed to find the time to tackle some of these Voltage games from my backlog! While I have the time I’m going to bang out as many of these as I can. So first up is Kai Fujisawa!

Initially, I was not overly excited about My Wedding and the 7 Rings, in fact I was quite content to forgo this addition to the Voltage lineup. My Forged Wedding was one of my favorite games, and the fake marriage premise was played out for me. But, that was before I saw this guy, the minute I saw Kai’s character design, I started singing a completely different tune. Kai is the calculating aloof type, both in his personal and in his professional life. Which makes him the perfect fit as Sanno Corporation’s Special Executive of IT Solutions. He is ruthless, not stopping at anything to get what he wants and if that means marrying the MC and having a loveless marriage…then so be it.

Mini Review: My Wedding and the 7 Rings

So, because Voltage is putting out new games and stories faster than I can play them all, my backlog is extremely long right now. Every time I tackle a game, Voltage puts out another one, so finding the time to play them all has been hard to do. However, I did manage to find the time to play through a few games, this was one of those games.

IMG_1661

A little over a year ago, Voltage released the English language version of  My Wedding and the 7 Rings a spin-off of the extremely popular, My Forged Wedding (MFW). The new game takes place in the same universe as the MFW series, and even features two of the love interests from the previous game, with a slightly modified back story.  Continue reading “Mini Review: My Wedding and the 7 Rings”

Mini Review: Starry Sky ~ in Spring ~

So, I’m playing this game along with three other bloggers, as part of a gaming group. We’re supposed to have the game done by May 1st, so this is more of an introduction of sorts to the game.

Starry Sky is a series of Japanese PC otome games (has since ported to PSP) developed by software company Honeybee. Starry Sky~ in Spring~ released in 2009, is the first game in the series, which centers around Tsukiko Yahisa (name changeable), the first female student to attend Seigetsu Academy. Each game features three love interests, in Spring the three love interests are Yoh Tomoe, Kanata Nanami, and Suzuya Tohzuki. Each love interest has a personality modeled after western zodiac signs. The game was followed by a spin-off sequel, Starry Sky~After Spring~, which takes place between the events of the main game and the epilogue.

Currently the game is not available in English, but there is a free full English patch for the PC version of the game. In order to use the patch, you have to purchase the actual game either on Amazon or elsewhere and then patch the game directly. It’s a process but if it means supporting the game, it’s worth the trouble. Fellow blogger, Cat has written a review of the PSP version of the game.

Time Hollow- Game Review

*So this is my first non-otoge review…let me know what you think of it!*

What if you had the power to change the past with just the flick of a pen? Would you use it? What about the consequences? Are they worth it?

These are the questions Ethan Kairos must answer, when he wakes up one morning to find a strange wormhole at the head of his bed. When he reaches inside he finds a strange green pen that allows him to open holes in time!

Time Hollow is a 2008 Nintendo DS single-player adventure visual novel. Written by Junko Kawano, it serves as the spiritual successor to the 2001 Playstation 2 game Shadows of Memories (which is also a really great game).

Toma Review

I can’t tell you how happy I am to be done with this game! It has been a long road to this point, and let me tell you, playing every route in a game is definitely a full time commitment. I have seen good, bad, and just plain ugly in this game, just to get to this point. So after watching Ukyo kill the MC with absolutely no warning what so ever in just about every bad ending of the game, I was a little curious about how his route would play out. I guess I was expecting some big character revelation or something, perhaps even a little explanation for his actions throughout the game…And you know what I got? Exactly that, this route is what is considered to be the canon route. Everything is explained, and I mean everything, the events of the other routes, Ukyo’s random bad endings, even Orion.

So, I landed every single bad ending this route had to offer (and there are SEVEN of them) before I could land even the normal ending. This route is not for the faint of heart, you really have to work to earn your happy ending!

*Side Note: I will not have an MC/Heroine section in this review…I feel that there just isn’t enough about her to fill an entire section in this game. I was actually really disappointed by the MC in this game.

Toma…Toma, Toma, Toma…sigh…Toma…I know I said this before, but I really have mixed feelings about childhood friend routes. Some are amazingly sweet, especially when executed well, while others…not so much. I don’t really like childhood friend stories at the best of times and from what I’d seen of Toma in Shin’s route, let’s just say that I was not overly thrilled to play his route. I didn’t need to get the end of Shin’s route to suspect that beneath his big brother act was a seriously twisted and messed up individual. The first indication that this route was different from the previous three was the addition of the Doubt indicator on the Parameters screen. The second indication was the fact that his Suspicion indicator is maxed out from the beginning. None of the other guys started at 100% Suspiscion, not even Shin, and he was accused of pushing the MC off a cliff. And even then I had to work for it! So then, I began wondering: What makes Toma so special? Why is his route so different? Well I’m afraid the answer is simple…he’s batshit crazy psycho insane in love with the MC.

*Side Note: I will not have an MC/Heroine section in this review…I feel that there just isn’t enough about her to fill an entire section in this game. I was actually really disappointed by the MC in this game.

So my Spring Break was not wasted…I finished Kent’s route…and let me tell you, I am so glad I didn’t play him first…he would have spoiled the rest of the game for me. I love, love, LOVED Kent! He is by far the best route of the game so far, I was so surprised by how much I liked this adorkable math whiz! There wasn’t really a “mystery” in this route…instead a good deal of the focus is put on the relationship between Kent and the MC, this is probably why I liked it so much. There was no over the top drama or conflict, which was refreshing given the plots in some of the other routes. I got the Normal Ending on the first try, as I did with the other routes in this game and then I got the Good Ending…and then I stopped…I couldn’t bare to get any of the Bad Endings…but then I came to my senses and for the sake of you guys and this review I went back and played for them… *mutters darkly* The things I do for reviews… Aside from that bit of torture, Kent’s route was amazing from start to finish!

*Side Note: I will not have an MC/Heroine section in this review…I feel that there just isn’t enough about her to fill an entire section in this game. I was actually really disappointed by the MC in this game.

Of all the routes available in this game, Ikki’s is probably the one that I was least looking forward to. I really don’t like the flirty, playboy types at all, I go out of my way to avoid them when I can. It was actually due to a mistake that I clicked Ikki’s route in the first place, I mixed up his route and Toma’s…not that I was looking forward to Toma’s route any more so than Ikki’s. He’s the typical playboy, good looking and always surrounded by women, but for some reason he’s dating a normal (mute) girl like the MC. So, the route itself, I want to say that despite my reservations his route managed to surprise me, but I’d be lying. While I didn’t outright hate Ikki’s route, I didn’t really enjoy it either, he’s just not my type.

As I did with Shin’s route, I did not get the Good Ending on the first try, I got one of the Bad endings, but weirdly enough I liked Ikki way more in that ending than I had in the entire game.

*Side Note: I will not have an MC/Heroine section in this review…I feel that there just isn’t enough about her to fill an entire section in this game. I was actually really disappointed by the MC in this game.

The Strict Megane Teacher Who Stole My Heart: After School Affair- Shinichi Kagari Review

Available: Google Play | App Store | Amazon App Store

So after an unbearable amount of waiting and pinning, Voltage finally decided to release Shinichi Kagari’s route for After School Affairs…Okay, I know I’m exaggerating, but damnit he should have been the first released route to begin with! If you follow me on Twitter or Tumblr you’ll know I was none to pleased with the decision to release Shinichi after Rikiya…but it was totally worth the wait! I couldn’t have been more pleased with this strict megane math teacher, he was more than I could have hoped for and the MC *sigh* I couldn’t be more proud of her! After playing Amnesia I can’t tell you how happy I am to have an MC that talks…and to actually have a personality to boot, I could cry!

Shinichi is strict and meticulous when it comes to his job, expecting nothing less than perfection from his students and coworkers. He starts off with a huge stick up his butt, quick to criticize even the slightest mistake. But, he only pushes people he sees potential in, so I guess it’s coming from a good place… On the other hand his home life is a mess..he reminds me of Tsugumu Kido from Our Two Bedroom Story in that respect. He is definitely not as strict with his home as he is with his school affairs.

Fangirl Moment: Mushi-Shi

Mushi-shi is a 10 volume manga series, released between 1999 and 2008. In 2005 the series was turned into a 26 episode anime series and a 20 episode second season was released in 2014, there are also two OVAs, a live action film (Joe Odigiri is awesome 😀 ), and an anime film. In a world of fast paced action shounen series and overly fluffy shoujo romances, the episodic occult detective series, Mushi-shi, is an oddity.

I love Mushi-shi, in fact it is one of my favorite series, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve re-watched the series over the years…it’s just so calming. From the open chords of the OP to the ethereal instrumentals of the ending themes, Mushi-shi definitely puts you in the mood for something mystical.

The story takes place in an imaginary period between the Edo and Meiji periods of Japan and follows Ginko a Mushi-shi (Mushi master) as he travels Japan solving problems caused by Mushi. It’s kind of hard to explain what mushi are, but for the most part mushi are primitive creatures more akin to fungi and bacteria. Usually, they co-exist with plants, animals, and human, without much problem, in fact they are imperceptible to humans, save for a few exceptions. Mushi are an integral part of nature, and rarely interact with humans, but when they do people tend to get the short end of the stick. The stories all range from bittersweet to downright Disney, but please rest assured that every person that comes into contact with mushi are changed in some way…usually for the better.

I usually don’t go for the childhood friend characters, but I really liked Shin’s character design. From the piercings to the jacket, everything about him seemed to scream bad boy, plus he’s a bit of a tsundere, which trumps everything. I actually really enjoyed Shin’s route, it had just enough mystery and suspense to keep me reading until the very end. I will admit that in hindsight the reveal was obvious, but at the time it took me a some time to figure it out. I had a really hard time getting the good ending in this route, first landing one of the bad endings which came right out of left field…I really did not see that coming at all, it was almost too random to be believable (especially when you haven’t played any other routes). Other than that the route was pretty good, everything lined up nicely plot-wise and Shin didn’t have a single out of character moment, all in all a solid route.

*Side Note: I will not have an MC/Heroine section in this review…I feel that there just isn’t enough about her to fill an entire section in this game. I was actually really disappointed by the MC in this game.

My Lover is a Stern God: Star Crossed Myth-Zyglavis Review

So here I am again binge playing a game on the first day of its release, but Zyglavis was just too good to pass up! I was pleantly surprised by this route, it is awesome! In the beginning Zyglavis is like a mix of Scorpio and Eisuke Ichinomiya, what with the constant spew of insults and the three second response time limit…But the more I played the more I enjoyed the route. This was a rare treat, and I am more than happy to give up a little sleep for this route!

Despite his initial coldness, Zyglavis is secretly the most compassionate of all the gods. Plus he’s gorgeous, just look at him, that long flowing hair, those penetrating eyes…

Mini Review- Amnesia: Memories

So I finally got around to finishing my first route in Amnesia: Memories! Yay! *throws confetti* As always, I’m a few months behind the rest of the otoge community, but I can live with that. I took my time playing this one, and I’m kinda glad I did…there was a lot going on with this game. Don’t get me wrong I enjoyed the game, it was fun, but there were some things that I had problems with.

So I decided to play Shin’s route first, because he happens to be on all the promotional art, and he looked cute. Usually I’d go for the megane hottie Kent first, but something told me that it would be in my best interest to play Shin’s route first…and I’ll have to let you know in a later post if that was the right decision.

My Lover is an Abrasive God: Star Crossed Myth- Scorpio Review

So this was suggested by voltage-lover-headcanons over on Tumblr. Thanks for the suggestion. I wasn’t sure if I was going to do a review on Scorpio, but your message on Tumblr was so nice, I just couldn’t say no!

Scorpio is one of my favorite Voltage characters, I fell in love with this dark haired god almost from the beginning, his dark hair and cool expressions just set my poor fangirl heart aflame. As I have said before I have a type: cool aloof, tsunderes, and snarky ice queens, Scorpio is all of that and so much more.

Scorpio description

Scorpio is a foul mouthed god, with a penchant for punishment, which I will admit may be a little off putting at first. His jerk levels at times are on par with the likes of Keith from Be My Princess, but once he falls in love Scorpio becomes a passionate, if not a tad bit possessive lover. I absolutely love Scorpio as a character, he and Takuto Hirukawa from Love Letter from Thief X are shining examples of tsunderes done right! It’s a shame that he always comes second to Eisuke Ichinomiya in every poll and tournament….

Fangirl Moment: I Shall Never Return

IMG_0615

So one of the manga series that I bought at Katsucon was the acclaimed yaoi classic, I Shall Never Return by Kazuna Uchida. I absolutely love this manga, everything about it just screamed 90’s, from the fashion to the angst ridden plot, it was a non-stop ride from start to finish. I couldn’t help but get swept up in the story of Ritsuru and Ken, as their friendship evolves into a passionate love affair. I could not put it down, quickly breezing through all five volumes in a matter of hours, it was just that good! Don’t let the art put you off this amazing title (I happen to love 90’s art), you will regret not reading this amazing title.

The five volume series released between 1992 and 1996 follows the friendship between Ritsuro, a straight laced high school student and Ken, a high school drop out who leads a life of sex and drugs. Despite Ken’s destructive lifestyle, Ritsuro sticks by him even after it causes friction between him and his girlfriend Moeko. I want to commend this title for actually having a female character that is important to the plot! Moeko is much more than the typical female prop character, she is an important friend to both Ritsuro and Ken, without getting in the way of the relationship between the two male leads. She is a side character that actually adds depth to the story in a meaningful way.

First Thoughts: After School Affairs

I usually don’t do this, but I figured for once, why not get ahead of the curve a little…Yesterday Voltage released a brand new game, After School Affairs! Am I excited about this game? Eh, not really, but that didn’t stop me from downloading it the minute it was available in the App store, like I do every Voltage game, good, bad, or indifferent…So here we go:

Once again Voltage is taking us to school, however this time instead of being one of the students, we get the chance to play as a teacher?! I know right! We’ve finally graduated from high school romances to forbidden teacher romance! Not that I have a problem with their available high school romance stories, it’s just nice to play as an adult some times is all.

Mini Review: Remembering A Knight’s Devotion

So with all the hype surrounding the newer Voltage Inc games, the older games aren’t getting as much attention. By older I mean those hidden gems that don’t appear on the Voltage Visual Romance Apps Facebook page, nor do they have fancy gifs on their Tumblr. No these unsung heroes are the forgotten foundation of the Voltage empire, and for many the start a long-term love affair with 2D pixel men…So I just wanted to throw a small spotlight on an older game by writing about my first ever otome A Knights Devotion. Yes, scoff if you want to, Voltage was my first introduction to the otome genre three years ago, and I haven’t look back since! I still remember playing it under the register at my barista job…*sigh* memories.

The Guy I Like is a Mobster: Kissed by the Baddest Bidder-Soryu Oh Review

So this started off as a rant about the Voltage Inc visual novel Kissed by the Baddest Bidder (KBTBB), but the more I began writing, the more it became a tribute to  Soryu Oh.

IMG_0642.PNG

Don’t get me wrong, I still have some fundamental issues with some key aspects of KBTBB, but I’ll save it for another day. But, then this post kinda sat in my drafts for weeks while I played other games, because KBTBB and I had a bit of a falling out of sorts, I just need to see other people for awhile. It happens like that sometimes. It wasn’t until I stumbled upon this birthday post on the Voltage Visual Romance Facebook Page:

To be honest, I had forgotten how HOT Soryu is with his hair down…*cough* So in honor of his birthday on Feb. 17, I decided to go back and replay Soryu’s Season 1, and remember just what drew me to the cool mobster in the first place…

The Robotic Butler Who Stole My Heart: Butler Until Midnight-Tomoki Matsuba

*This has literally been sitting in my drafts for a month…lol*

So while taking a break from Astoria, I managed to find time for Votage’s newest game Butler Until Midnight…I must have died and gone to otoge fangirl heaven! Voltage didn’t have to try hard to sell me their newest game, Butler Until Midnight, I was down from the first video on their YouTube channel! I mean, butlers! Frickin, BUTLERS!!!! *cough* Ahem, *cough* I was excited for this game. Of course, there was one character that caught my eye, Tomoki Matsuba.

IMG_0345

Unlike Yuma and some of the other guys, he seemed like the ideal butler type. He was everything I could have hoped for and more. In the beginning, Tomoki, is a harsh perfectionist with an impeccably accurate internal clock (homeboy can calculate the time down to the second). But, before I knew it this butler really wormed his way into my heart…

Genre: Boys Love (BxB), Romance, Comedy, Drama, Angst

Release Date:2011

I will admit that Boys Love webcomics have become a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine. I like to think of myself as a connoisseur of sorts when it comes to BL content, a collector, at least you’d think so from the state of my backlog. Now I won’t say that I always read for the plot, because that would be lying, but a really good BL comic has to have a decent plot to keep me coming back for more. The smut and art get me in the door, but it’s the plot that keeps me clicking. AngelYeah‘s KaitoShuno was just that comic!

The Guy I Kinda Like is a Greek God: Astoria Fates Kiss- Hades Season 1 Review

Because of some impromptu snow days I finally got the opportunity to play Hades’s season 1 stories and OMG, it was everything I could have hoped for and more! He is such a gentleman and I found myself swooning over him just as much as the MC (maybe even more). I don’t think I have anything bad to say about the guy, but maybe I’m biased, I’ve had my eye on him from the beginning. But, I do want to take a moment to applaud Voltage and Astoria Fates Kiss for the inclusion of POC (People of Color)! Several of the characters in this route, come in various shades and hues, and I cannot tell you just how happy that makes me! As a person of color it makes me super happy to see characters that look like me in an otome game. It’s rare that POC are given primary roles in games, TV, and other media, so to have a love interest with a little color is quite the welcome treat!

The Guy I Kinda Like is an Ice Cold Criminal: Astoria Fates Kiss- Hydra Season 1 Review

Initially I had some reservations when Voltage announced that they’d be revamping their Voltage USA line of games as AmeMix. In the past I had found their other English games, lackluster at best and not much to my taste. So, when Astoria Fates Kiss (formerly Labyrinths of Astoria) was released I didn’t pay it much mind. But, after a while curiosity got the better of me, and I soon found myself binge playing the game in one sitting. At the time Hydra was the only appealing character available.

hydra-season-2

I was hesitant, so I only bought his Main Story 1, but before I knew it I had purchased the second and third Main Stories as well…I really enjoyed his route, it had action, drama, and romance. I laughed, I cried (well maybe not cried per se, but I did tear up a bit), I even wanted to punch Hydra a few times…He is such a stubborn butthead. If I had to sum him up in two words it’d be: lone wolf. Hydra is a man with very strong convictions and morals, which put him at odds with the MC and some of the other characters in his route. He can be pushy and singleminded at times, which makes him a bit unsympathetic when others don’t agree with him.

So this goes without saying: There will be SPOILERS (I will try to keep them to a minimum, but I make no promises)! If you want a spoiler free review of the game check HERE, where I give a general overview of the Labyrinths of Astoria or HERE where I give a preliminary assessment of Fates Kiss.

My Lover is a Deranged Rabbit: Alice in the Heart- Peter Review

Edit: On September 25, 2015 QuinRose’s parent company Artmove ceased distribution of ALL QuinRose games. As of right now the game is still available in the GooglePlay store, but has been removed from Apple’s App store! Despite this I hope you enjoy this review!

Alice in the Heart has not been received favorably by many fans. I’ve read several reviews and rants about its many shortcomings. Many have called the game half-assed, drawing attention the poor translation quality, hastily edited CGs, and lackluster writing. For me this is my first ever Quin Rose game (I’m a Quin Rose virgin 😉 ), so I may be a bit more forgiving of shortcomings in the game…I’m not going to go into a whole lot of detail about the gameplay as a whole, for that check out my earlier post about the game HERE, where I give my first thoughts about the game, the review covers the prologue.

So I decided that Peter would be the first guy I tried in the game… He’s the first guy you meet, so why not…Down the Hole croppedI have mixed feelings about Prime Minister Peter White…For one he’s a megane man, which may have influenced my decision to play him first, but Peter is the complete opposite of my type. He is madly in love with Alice from the jump, which at times can be a bit suffocating, his affection was a bit too pushy for me. I found that I liked cold, cruel Peter a bit more than I liked overly affectionate Peter…. While I did get Peter’s Best Ending on the first try, the translation made it a little hard to understand…so I had to play his route a second time for the sake of clarity.

Alice in the Heart

Alternate Titles: Alice in the Country of Hearts, Hāto no Kuni no Arisu

Year: 2014

Developer: QuinRose

Platforms: IOS, Android, PC, PSP

Edit: On September 25, 2015 QuinRose’s parent company Artmove ceased distribution of ALL QuinRose games. As of right now the game is no longer available in Google Play or the App store! Despite this I hope you enjoy this review!

So I’m about a year late at finally playing this game. So when I heard that we were going to get an English port of Alice in the Country of Hearts, I was super stoked! Alice in Wonderland the otoge, is like a dream, but then I heard about the terrible translation. It broke my heart…So with heavy heart I decided to pass the game up and moved on…But now that the semester is done with and winter break is on the horizon, I figured it was time to finally give the game another try…

So the elephant in the room…the translation! It’s completely awful, but bearable. I mean I will give QuinRose props for translating the entire game on their own, especially since they aren’t native English speakers!

Mini Review- Astoria: Fate’s Kiss

So as many of you may know Astoria: Fate’s Kiss is the sequel/ second season of Labyrinths of Astoria

Now that Season 1 has come to a close, in preparation for our second season, we’d like to announce a name change, from “Labyrinths of Astoria” to “Astoria: Fate’s Kiss”! Love can be like like a labyrinth – first, you have to fight your way through challenges to be with the one you love! So then, the next stage is up to fate! (。•̀ᴗ-)✧

Voltage/AmeMix

I am so hyped and I’ve only played the prologue! Let me start off by praising Astoria and Voltage for including POC, and for those who don’t know that is “People of Color“, as characters in the game! It is refreshing to see characters of all shades and hues as side characters and main characters! I mean holy Hera, even Zeus, the king of the gods is black…and not kinda Black, he’s Black, Black! Like a chocolate dipped dream! Yes! It is so rare to see POC characters in otome, and I for one hope that Voltage USA, keeps it up with their future AmeMix releases!

Mini Review: Scandal in the Spotlight

So I sorta kinda fell in love with REVANCE!

REVANCE is the fictional boy band in Voltage Inc.’s mobile otoge Scandal in the Spotlight: Our Secret Love Song. At first I was hesitant, SITS, comes on the heels of Serendipity Next Door, which also featured a secret love affair with a musician. However, unlike Spotlight, Serendipity Next Door was cancelled before the story could really take off. So I wasn’t really ready to invest my time and money into another game, only to see it cancelled prematurely. Boy am I glad that I changed my mind, the game reminds me of Voltage’s older (at least to me) games like Love Letter from Thief X and Be My Princess, in that I instantly fell in love with all of the characters! There is something special about each and every one of the selectable guys, and believe me when I say I haven’t felt this way about an otome for a long time.

The Guy I Kinda Like is Unfriendly: My Last First Kiss- Ichiya Misono Season 1 Main Story

What can I say, I have a type…

So first off, is it me or does Ichiya remind anyone of Ryoki from the manga Hot Gimmick?

  1. They both lived in the same apartment complex as their love interest.
  2. They both terrorized their love interests as children (and to some extent when they grew up).
-Ryoki pushed his down a flight of stairs, while Ichiya stole the MC’s stuffed bunny and locked her on the roof for hours in the rain.
  3. They both want the MC to be their girlfriend to dissuade an an unwanted suitor
  4. Both guys had messed up home lives
-Ichiya’s parents divorced when he was in junior high, while Ryoki’s parents divorced later in the manga, but they were distant for a long time prior to the split. His dad even had an affair…

Mini Review: No Thank You!!! (aka Why Safe Words are Important)

No Thank You!!! is a 2013 Boy’s Love (BL) visual novel originally developed by Parade. In 2015 the game was released in English by MangaGamer, but unlike the original release this version was…COMPLETELY UNCENSORED! I repeat, completely uncensored, this game is absolutely NSFW!

Summary

The story takes place over the course of an entire summer. It begins with you, the protagonist saving a man from being hit by a car. You narrowly push the man out of the way, but the car clips you instead, as a result you develop amnesia. The man, Inui, thanks you for saving his life by giving you a job at his Jazz club, and puts you up in an apartment, at least until you regain your memories. Since you can’t remember your name, the staff dub you, Haru. So begins your summer at club, Sonato, which is the front for detective agency that specializes in cases the police can’t solve. As the summer wears on you form bonds with your fellow coworkers and help solve cases, while trying to piece together who you really are.

Mini Review: Seduce Me 2 Demo

The purpose of demos are to get you hyped for the actual game, well mission accomplished! Michaela Laws’ newly released demo does that and more! I have never been so ready for a new release as I have for Seduce Me 2, the sequel to free to play otome Seduce Me. I can’t wait for the game, and I am more than willing to pay any amount just to get my hands on it when it is released.

Mini Review: Labyrinths of Astoria (AKA Astoria: Fate’s Kiss)

Banner_LoA.jpg

So I wasn’t a huge fan of the previous Voltage USA titles, they all just fell flat for me…I felt that instead of adapting the existing Voltage games for an American audience, Voltage should have been more consistent in updating the stuff they already had! So when Voltage announced that they would be releasing Voltage USA 2.0,  AmeMix, let’s just say I was less than enthused…To say I was hesitant about the new venture is a bit of an understatement, to be honest I had even resigned myself to completely ignore its existence… but curiosity…and a lot of good press later had me downloading the first (and only) game in the series: Labyrinths of Astoria (now Astoria: Fates Kiss) onto my Ipad Mini…and there it stayed unopened and unplayed for weeks!

That is until I received a ‘Coming Soon’ notification for Hades’ Main Story 1… and Lord help me… that man can get it!

From Friends to Lovers: DRAMAtical Murder Koujaku’s Review

This has been sitting in my Drafts for a while now…I thought some time would give me a little perspective…

So I just finished playing DMMd, and I got Koujaku’s Good End on the first try! Yay me! But to be honest this route was kind of dull for me. I usually go for the tsundere types and ignore the childhood friend/brother types, but Koujaku was just too good looking to pass up. And boy is he the mother of all childhood friends! Koujaku is Aoba’s flirty/womanizing childhood friend with just enough of a troubled past to warrant him having his own route.

Koujaku 5

Koujaku is the resident hairdresser of the Old District and leader of the local Rib team, Benishigure. As stated above he and Aoba are childhood friends, but sometime before the plot, Koujaku and his mother moved away from Midorijima to the Mainland. When he returned (alone) he and Aoba continued their friendship as if no time had passed. Because of his skill, Koujaku is the man women love and men want to be. He has amassed a large number of female fans who, throw themselves at him every chance they get.

**Disclaimer: I don’t own these images, they belong to Nitro+chiral…and this goes without saying, but there will be minor SPOILERS under the cut… Also, there is a NSFW image in this post (it’s rather tame by BL standards, though) you have been warned*

Koujaku Specific Common Route Events

Fangirl

The girl in pink is about to implode…

When we first meet Koujaku, he entertaining his adoring fangirls, after having diffused a misguided, jealous boyfriend. Aoba happens by catching Koujaku’s full attention, this incurs some ire from the gathered girls who fight to keep his attention. But sorry ladies, this is the wrong game for you…The two friends shoot the breeze for a while, when one of the girls tries to touch Aoba’s long beautiful blue hair. (A BIG no no!) Koujaku grabs the lady’s hand just before she can touch him and diffuses the situation with a few sweet words. The men part ways promising to see each other later. Aoba runs off to his next fateful encounter of the day.

(Skips NON-Koujaku relevent Common Route Plot Events)

Aoba blacks out and wakes up in a strange place, he realizes he has been dragged into Rhyme. He gets his ass handed to him for awhile before a particularly intense headache awakens his inner badass! He orders a barrage of SUPER EFFECTIVE attacks before blacking out again. He wakes up in front of the junk shop sore and confused, before passing out again. Somehow he gets home and we are treated to the sexiest CG ever….

CG13

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh

Aoba thinks he hears a sound (creeper mode Koujaku) outside his window as he drifts off to sleep, but he dismisses it. A few hours later Aoba is awoken by Beni, Koujaku’s snarky Allmate. (I love Beni!) He goes downstairs to find Koujaku making good on his earlier promise to stop by, they eat and return to Aoba’s room. Now as I said in my First Thoughts post, sexy men smoking is just plain sexy…Koujaku lights up on the balcony and Aoba remarks that he only smokes when he visits. He wonders if it’s because Aoba’s place is the only place he feels at home. The pair talk and Koujaku remarks that Aoba’s long beautiful blue hair needs a cut, but Aoba reminds him that he cuts his own hair. Apparently he has magical glowing sensitive pain feeling hair, so he usually lets it grow long. Because of this, Koujaku thought he was a little girl when they first met.  The conversation drifts to the drive by Rhyme battle Aoba experienced, and Koujaku warns him to be careful before leaving.

(Again Skips Non-Koujaku related Plot)

We next meet Noiz (the mystery Rhyme drive by) who has broken into Aoba’s room in order to challenge him to another match. He informs Aoba that he actually won the earlier match, surprised Aoba experiences a heroic BSOD. Here you are give a choice, if you choose “hear a sound on the stairs” Koujaku comes to your aid. They have a pissing contest until Clear and Tae-san interrupt.

nosebleed___dmmd_by_creepycanon-d6wvfra

Tae-san don’t play!

The group head downstairs for tea and doughnuts…yeah…doughnuts…After a few awkward doughnut eating scenes later, Koujaku and Aoba discuss the mysterious Rib team disappearances and Mizuki’s (leader of the Dry Juice Rib team and another friend of Aoba) weird behavior. Everyone leaves and the plot keeps on truckin’.

Here are some highlights:

  1. Noiz kisses Aoba
  2. Koujaku and Noiz continue their pissing match
  3. Aoba finds that Dry Juice has been erased
  4. Aoba gets another weird game download
  5. Tae-san gets kidnapped
  6. Aoba gets kidnapped, almost raped….and then let go?!
  7. Rescue mission to save Mizuki
  8. Aoba accidentally breaks Mizuki

After the failed mission Aoba blacks out again, waking up safe and sound in his room. He goes downstairs to find Tae-san and the rest of the gang downstairs (without the doughnuts this time). Tae-san then introduces the plot. She reveals that she used to work for Toue, the evil corporation that owns Midorijima, as researcher. She was tasked with discovering how to repair inactive brain function and the effects of various drugs on the brain. She thought her research would be used for the good of humanity, but surprise surprise Toue had other plans. They wanted to create an army of brainless zombies to help them take over the world! *que Pinky and the Brain theme music* Upset Tae quit her job and settled in the Old District to live out her life in peace, but Toue wanted her back. So they had Morphine kidnap her, she also reveals that the missing Ribsters were used in failed Toue brain experiments. To round out her exposition dump, Tae reveals that Aoba has a mysterious power called Scrap, that allows him to control persuade people with his voice. He’d actually used it on Mizuki, but because he was unaware of his power he broke Mizuki’s will. *que ‘With great power comes great responsibility’ speech* The final revelation of the night is that Aoba used to be a ruthless bad boy….oh and a Rhyme user, but an accident in Rhyme landed him in the hospital. His Scrap consciousness took over and he hurt a nurse, he then fell into a coma. when he woke up he’d completely forgotten about Rhyme.

Victorious Childhood Friend

The common route ends with the group deciding to storm the citadel Platinum Jail and take down Toue for good. If you made the right choices during the Common Route, you will find yourself in Koujaku’s Route.

DMMd_crack_for_ver110_2013-08-11_18-11-52-27 (1)

Welcome to Koujaku’s Route, please keep your hands and feet inside the ride at all times…

Untitled

Oh yeah, romantic piggyback ride….check

Let me start off by saying that Koujaku’s version of the Platinum Jail is gorgeous! It’s a mix of modern and traditional Japanese architecture, even Aoba and Koujaku are momentarily dazzled by it. And then the plot rears its ugly head again, soon after entering the Platinum Jail, Aoba and Koujaku run into some women and Koujaku’s latent womanizing nature rears its ugly head. At this point I almost stopped playing! Koujaku is like that friend that invites you to a party and then ditches you right after you get there (dick move). He drops Aoba like a sack of potatoes to go party with the girls, much to Aoba’s (and my own) disgust. Aoba decides to explore on his own for a while before turning in for the night. Koujaku slinks in some time after midnight, with no information and a half assed apology. Aoba is not amused to say the least.

maxresdefault

As if the skull necklace wasn’t enough…

This continues for the next few nights, so our shunned cutie decides to follow Koujaku like a jealous ex. Angry Aoba follows him to a members only club, unable to enter he decides to abort the mission. But as luck would have it a completely not suspicious man in a blue kimono offers to help him get into the club. This fox eyed man who Aoba dubs ‘A helpful stranger’ gives him a members card and wishes him luck finding his friend. Now that he’s alone in the rave like atmosphere of the club, Aoba feels light headed, he gets sick and passes out. The doped up clubbers laugh and step on our poor incapacitated Aoba. I half expected the guy in the blue kimono to show up, but lo, our hero is saved by none other than Koujaku. Relieved Aoba promptly vomits on Koujaku’s beautiful kimono….and I silently cheer, as he has been a complete jerk to Aoba the entire trip. Embarrassed Aoba apologizes, but Koujaku is having none of it. He holds Aoba to his bosom and wipes away the vomit, his long fingers lingering on his soft lips….I jest…I jest…He wipes Aoba up and carries him princess style out of the club. During the walk home, Aoba does his best impression of a human backpack and the friends reminisce about old times. Aoba misses a really good opportunity to question him about his suspicious activities and goes to sleep….He wakes up sometime later to find Koujaku washing his Kimono in the bathroom. Both Aoba and I were not ready for the sheer sexiness that is a half naked Koujaku…But that isn’t what catches his eye, oh no, it is the giant tattoo that takes up a large portion of his back, and the multiple scars that blemish his perfect skin. He wonders when he got them, as he didn’t have them when they were kids. He figures they must have happened after he left the island, which further reminds him that there is a side of Koujaku he doesn’t know. He silently hopes that one day Koujaku will notice him reveal his secrets.

Sexy back

Is it hot in here?

Aoba confides in Koujaku that he cant trust him, and Koujaku though disappointed, agrees that he is right to feel that way and leaves. Aoba has a dream about his childhood which prompts him to forgive Koujaku, but when he knocks on his door no one answers, his anger renewed Aoba returns to the club to tell him off. But instead of Koujaku he meets blue kimono dude, who chats him up for a bit, Ren informs Aoba that Beni is near and they continue their search. The weather taking a hint from the plot decides it’s time to rain. Aoba runs home to dry off, soon after Koujaku returns in a jealous rage demanding to know what’s going on between Aoba and blue kimono. Koujaku channels his inner rapist, forcing himself on Aoba, who argues with his inner Scrap persona not to hurt Koujaku.

rape

I felt kind of awkward watching this scene unfold….

Aoba commands Koujaku to stop with his Scrap, promptly punching him for extra measures. Koujaku snaps out of it before any more damage can be done, but further pisses me and poor Aoba off by NOT explaining himself. I mean come on, at the very least you could apologize, but no, he doesn’t say anything!  At this point I thought I’d made the wrong choices at some point and I was hurtling towards one of the bad endings I’d heard so much about, but nope, this is still the good route. Aoba leaves the house to clear his head and runs into blue kimono, again…but this time the creep invites him home with him. Broken, Aoba agrees (bad idea…very bad idea).

This is where the route takes a turn for the ridiculous! Aoba willingly goes in this stranger’s house surprised at the tattoos hanging on the wall, one is an exact copy of the tattoo on Koujaku’s back, but for some reason Aoba can’t quite place it….really…I find that hard to believe…He then drinks the tea Ryuuhou (blue kimono) offers him, no questions asked. So it’s no surprise when Aoba looses consciousness and wakes up strapped to a table. He reveals that he wants to tattoo Aoba and that he knows about his power, but before he can go any further Koujaku comes to save him. Ryuuhou messes with Koujaku until he looses control, forcing Aoba to stop him with his power. Ryuuhou pulls a Megatron, just as the members of Benishigure burst in. The pair escape to their makeshift headquarters to formulate a plan.

Koujaku and Aoba rekindle their relationship, when Koujaku finally reveals some of his secrets. He is the bastard son of a yakuza boss on the mainland. When he left the island as a child he lived with his father who hired Ryuuhou to tattoo him. In the good end you learn that the tattoo is slowly consuming Koujaku and that when he looses control of his emotions the tattoo takes over. It is also revealed that he killed his mother during one of his rages and returned to the island soon after. Ryuuhou it seems was working with Toue and the tattoo is all a part of their mind control zombie project. Yep…mind control tattoos…Koujaku and Aoba storm Toue only to find Ryuuhou waiting, Koujaku hulks out and kills him, but instead of reverting back he loses himself. Aoba uses his Scrap to save him and everyone lives happily ever after…I’m so serious….

i love you

How could anyone say no to that face?

Some time later everyone returns to their normal lives, Aoba admits that he and Koujaku haven’t talked much recently, when who shows up but the man himself. Koujaku asks if he can come over to talk later, to which Aoba agrees. Koujaku admits that he cares for Aoba as more than a friends and asks Aoba if he returns his feelings…..

Koujaku the horn dog appears and that can only mean one thing….

CG58

I think Koujaku’s reached his limit already…

But then this takes it to another level….

nosebleed

Yes Koujaku, the manly man, Koujaku gets so excited finally consummating his relationship with Aoba that he gets a nose bleed….Aoba and I had the exact same reaction….I laughed for a good ten minutes….After a particularly passionate and awkward love making session, Koujaku has a request for Aoba. He wants to cut his hair…He claims it has been his lifelong dream! In the epilogue we see the two alone at Koujaku’s place, Aoba sporting a much shorter do…

it took 2 hrs

Final Thoughts

His whole route just fell flat for me. I didn’t really feel the love between him and Aoba, friends with benefits maybe, but becoming lovers at the end was a stretch.

I didn’t feel anything from him, he seemed like one big tease from the start. Sure he cares about Aoba, but I never got the feeling that it was more than just a platonic kind of relationship. They already had an established relationship, so there wasn’t a huge build up like with the other characters. They were just besties who evolved into lovers because the plot demanded it, not because there was some huge revelation in their relationship. The entire route was about growth from a childhood FRIENDSHIP to an adult FRIENDSHIP (key word friendship).

The entire conflict with Toue was kind of put on the back burner for a majority of this route, and at one point I completely forgot that they were the big bad. During the second half it’s Koujaku and Aoba’s relationship that provides most of the conflict.Koujaku doesn’t want to involve Aoba in his dark past, and then to make matters worse Aoba uses the Power of Love to free Koujaku from his inner demons… All in all despite the complaints I liked this route, but it is not my favorite.

First Thoughts: DRAMAtical Murder

DRAMAtical Murder is a 2012 Nitro+chiral BL game (same folks who made the delightful Sweet Pool among others…). The game takes place in the not too distant future and follows protagonist, Aoba, a blue haired junk shop worker with beautiful long blue hair. He lives with his grandmother Tae and spends most of his time making deliveries that is until he is dragged into a virtual mind game called Rhyme!

So I heard about this game a year ago, ironically enough watching a Let’s Play video for Hatoful Boyfriend…Back then everyone was very vague about the game, so all I knew was that it was a BL game and that the bad endings were pretty gruesome…But now that there’s an anime…I can’t even search reviews for the game without seeing *SPOILER WARNING* ( it has been a pain keeping spoiler free).I will spend the next few days playing DMMd while my bank account recovers some from my last Voltage Binge. But between work and sleep I don’t have high hopes for getting too far, so here are some thoughts I had while playing:
