Room No. 9 BL Game Review – The Most Intense Game of ‘Would You Rather’

After finishing the romantic comedy otome game Love Spell: Written in the Stars I set my sights on the newest boys love visual novel Room No. 9. This is the second Parade game to make it’s way stateside, following MangaGamer’s localization of No Thank You!!! in 2015—and I’m going to be honest with you, despite coming from the same publisher, these two games couldn’t be more different. In fact, with it’s psychological horror elements, Room No. 9 has more in common with the recent JAST Blue localizations of Sweet Pool and Togainu no Chi. There is a lot to unpack with this game and I won’t be the first person to say that Room No. 9  is NOT for everyone.

I went into Room No. 9 without having read anything about it—not the game bios, not the Steam page… nothing. It wasn’t until I saw the insane disclaimer and the content filter setup at the start of the game that I had any indication of what was in store for me with this game and for what it’s worth, I think there’s more of a precedence for going into the game blind. Like the main characters, you are thrown headfirst into the confusion and fear that surrounds their unfortunate situation, which in turn makes the abject horror and psychological upheaval Daichi and Seiji face all the more terrifying.

Thrifty Gaming: Games That Won’t Blow Your Budget #64

Hey there Heroes, Travelers, and Wandering NPCs, it’s once again that special time of the week—Thrifty Thursday!

In a world where it’s all about the almighty dollar, sometimes it’s a little tough to make our pennies stretch enough to accommodate our hobbies. But, there are plenty of ways to balance your budget while still enjoying the things you love, you just have to be a little thrifty about it. So, I created Thrifty Gaming in order to spotlight some lesser known indie titles that are both entertaining an affordable.

If you’re a new follower or someone who has been following since my Nice Job Breaking It Hero days and have been gone for awhile, here’s a refresher… Thrifty Gaming, is a weekly post series where I spotlight three games/visual novels that are under $10.00. These can be mobile games, PC games, and a few times I have found some nice indie console titles too. The list used to focus on just otome games and romance visual novels, but after requests from a few readers I have since expanded to other gaming genres. I don’t include sales or limited time offers, each title has to be consistently priced at $10.00 or less without any promotions to be included in this line up.

Note, these are not reviews, rather recommendations so your mileage may vary with some of these titles. This week’s post will include a brief synopsis and links to each game so you can add them to your gaming library! You don’t have to break the bank to enjoy your hobbies, so save a little bread and check this week’s thrifty gaming picks!

Love Spell: Written in the Stars Game Review – Love at the Flick of a Pen

In recent years, I have found myself more drawn to indie otome games than traditional Japanese otome games and that has a lot to do with the seeming disconnect I’ve felt with the stories. Don’t get me wrong, I still love my otome games—I’m absolutely looking forward to the upcoming English releases of Cafe Enchante and Piofiore: Fated Memories—but as a whole I’m not seeing too much variety in the types of otome games that make their way to the West (ie. story heavy action-y otome games). I get it localizing companies are pushing what they think will sell best on the English market, and I can’t fault them for choosing games that are most likely to have more “mass appeal”, but there is a distinct lack in lighthearted comedic otome game localizations, that I find to be quite sad.

In comparison, the indie scene doesn’t have the same restrictions, so there’s often much more variety in the types of games that are released. So if you’re looking for a more relaxed otome gaming experience, you can’t go wrong setting your sights on some of the indie games available—like Love Spell: Written in the Stars, the debut romance game from female led indie studio Great Gretsuki. Follow the game’s heroine, Luna, as she embarks on a magical journey, full of love, laughter, and just bit of adventure!
