Betcha Can’t Read Just One: Reading FanFics is a Slippery Slope

Y’all ever hear that old Lays potato chip slogan, ‘Betcha can’t eat just one’? It was well before my time but, I find that it pretty accurately sums up my relationship with Fanfiction. No matter how hard I try, I can never seem to read just one.

3nfx1h.jpg

It always starts the same way: I find a really good fic—usually KuroTsuki… but BakuDeku is growing on me too—I get really engrossed in the story. Like Sam I Am in Green Eggs and Ham, I read that fic all over the place—on the train to and from work, at my desk during my lunch break, between tasks, curled up in bed, hell, I even read while walking to the station in the morning. I binge the hell outta that fic! And then, like most good things, the fic ends and I’m left with this gaping void in my daily routine.

Side Characters Shouldn’t Be This Cute – Non-Dateable Otome Guys I Wish Had A Route

Otome games are filled with beautiful boys, it’s a part of that fantasy to romance your own personal harem of super mega hot guys… But, have you ever come across a really hot guy in an otome game only to discover that he isn’t one of the main love interests?! You know what I mean, that really really ridiculously good looking side character that makes you wanna renounce LI bae and run off into the sunset with this no-name Joe. It’s unfair to have a good looking side character, because no matter how much they make your heart flutter, he will forever just be a beautiful gem sparkling in the background.

Meanwhile elevated extras like Demento from Period Cube get half-assed excuses for routes, while a perfectly attractive and approachable side character is right there, just out of reach! So, that got me thinking… a dangerous pasttime… I know~ about some of my favorite unobtainable otome side characters. The boys that deserve so much more love, but alas, are just out of reach. Sometimes we’ll get lucky and they’ll get a route in one of the ports or fandiscs, like Finn from Steam Prison who didn’t have a route in the original PC release but got one in the Vita port or Sannan who was recently elevated from tragic antagonist/ally to bona fide love interest in Hakuoki Kyoto Winds/Edo Blossoms.

But, for the purpose of this list, I’m just gonna stick to main games and not FDs, spin-offs, or sequels. And if any of these guys do have a route somewhere else, definitely let me know… cus, I need to see my boys in the spotlight for once!!

Visions for A Better Tomorrow – January 2020 “Visions” OWLS Blog Tour

It’s a new year and with it comes the promise of a new beginning for many looking to put the hardships of last year behind them. Like many, I see the new year as a chance to start fresh, both online and in my personal life. 2019 ended on a high note with me finally securing a full time job, giving me a much more positive outlook for the new year. There will of course be some ups and downs, but I’m definitely optimistic about what 2020 has in store for me moving forward.

So, when the lovely Lyn revealed that the theme for our first Blog Tour of 2020 would be visions, I was eager to put my own personal spin on the topic. Initially, I intended to write about the anime series revisions (which explains the feature image), and while I’ll probably plug the series at some point in this post, I felt that a more personal post was necessary this time around.

Happy New Year! Since it is a new year, it’s a new you! This month we will be talking about various pop culture mediums that focus on envisioning “the future.” What type of future do we want for ourselves, our communities, and the world? Also, we will be sharing our goals and plans for the new year. Once again, happy new year!

-OWLS January 2020 “Visions” Blog Tour Prompt

OWLS has grown and changed considerably since it’s inception back in 2017, I remember being approached by the President of OWLS Katrina Sade to join the group that at the time had a very simple goal, “to create a safe space for people to be free being who they are”. We didn’t have a huge platform back then, it was just a small group of bloggers from the aniblogging community who wanted to make a small difference in the world.

[OWLS “Failure” Blog Tour] Taking Aim Even if You Miss: Exploring Minato’s Target Panic in Tsurune

It’s time for another OWLS Blog Tour, most of you were probably directed here after reading Megan’s personal post about Welcome to the NHK and if you haven’t read her post I definitely recommend giving it a read!! If you stumbled upon this post by chance, welcome to Blerdy Otome!

The end of the year is fast approaching and we’ve hit our 11th Blog Tour of 2019. For those of you just joining the party, OWLS is a group of bloggers and vloggers that hope to spread a message of acceptance and understanding through thoughtful community activism! We use our love of pop-culture and other media to discuss a wide range of topics. Each month we host themed Blog Tours where we discuss topics we feel are important to the greater fandom community.

One of the best ways we can learn is through failure. This month we will be talking about the failures of our favorite characters in pop culture media and what we can learn from them. We will also reflect on our own mistakes and failures and how those experiences have allowed us to grow as human beings.

–November 2019 Blog Tour Prompt

This month we’re looking at Failure and you know, it’s kind of fitting that the penultimate Blog Tour of 2019 would be a topic that would require a bit of self reflection… The truth is, failure sucks. No one wants to admit that they didn’t make the cut, but rather than looking at failure as a negative, I like to think of it as a foundation for growth. No genre embodies this notion like sports anime, regardless of the sport there is always a point in the story where someone loses. But, just because you lose one tournament or match doesn’t mean you’ll lose them all and that’s fundamentally what’s so appealing about sports anime. You see a group of characters learning to overcome their failures and ultimately achieve something better than when they started.

In Haikyuu Karasuno lost to Aoba Josai at the Inter Highs in season 1, it’s a crushing blow after all their hard work and training. They could easily let this defeat define them, but they don’t give up, they work hard and when they face Aoba Josai again in season 2, they’ve learned from their past mistakes and manage to come out victorious. In Yuri On Ice, after experiencing a crushing defeat at the Grand Prix Final, manages to turn it all around the following year and place second in the Grand Prix Finals. The road to that point wasn’t easy and there were plenty of mistakes made along the way, but Yuri never let that keep him from giving it his all! And don’t get me started on Diamond no Ace… Eijun is practically defined by his failures…

Swipe Right: Otome Guys I’d Totally Date in Real Life

Otome games are all about exploring your fantasies, doing things you can’t do in your everyday life. Whether that’s getting sucked into a virtual reality game or fighting alongside the legendary Shinsengumi, in otome games you can be or do whatever you want. The biggest draw of otome games are the love interests, each game gives you your very own harem of hot guys to romance. But, let’s be real, half of us would never date some of our favorite otome guys in real life. In fact, some of the most popular otome guys are downright assholes.

Boy Bye.gif

If not for the fantasy aspect of otome romances we wouldn’t give most otome guys the time of day. Hell, I’m guilty of liking questionable characters, some of my favorite otome guys are either tsundere or kuudere and I find those kinds of guys insufferable in real life. And don’t get me started on oresama characters, ain’t nobody got time to stroke the ego of an arrogant man child.

So that got me thinking about the otome love interests I would date in real life and the results were pretty surprising. None of my favorite otome characters actually made the list, but thems the rub I suppose…

[OWLS “Fantasy” Blog Tour] Otome Games: Choose Your Fantasy

It’s time for another OWLS Blog Tour, most of you were directed here after reading Takuto’s lovely post about Sword Art Online Alicization and if you haven’t read his post I definitely recommend giving it a read!! If you stumbled upon this post by chance, welcome to Blerdy Otome! The end of the year is fast approaching and we’ve hit our 10th Blog Tour of 2019. We use our love of pop-culture and other media to discuss a wide range of topics. Each month we host themed Blog Tours where we discuss topics we feel are important to the greater fandom community.

For the month of October our topic is “Fantasy” I decided to discuss otome games (again) and how they portray romance. The appeal of otome games comes not from depicting realistic romance, but from the fantasy of what we wish romance could be.

In the month of October, we will be exploring the world of fantasy in pop culture. The genre of fantasy focuses on telling stories about our external and internal environments. There are many ways we can interpret the word fantasy. For example, we can talk about how a fantastical place could glorify what reality should be, or the dangers of ideal expectations. Fantasy could also be seen as taking a “wild journey” or a “hallucination,” and how that can affect our psyche and well-being. Additionally, fantasy can focus on our personal dreams and expectations, and how those expectations do not align with our reality. Overall, our posts will reflect on how we view the fantasy genre and what we can learn about these pop culture mediums.

– October 2019 Blog Tour Prompt

I’ll reference a few otome games in this post, but there shouldn’t be any spoilers since I intend to focus primarily on the concept of otome games rather than a rundown of a specific title.

Backlog Diaries: Admitting I Have a Problem…

I’ve kind of been dancing around this topic for awhile now, since like many gamers my backlog is a point of pride and shame. I’m not alone in this, just about every gamer I know has a backlog, that despite our best efforts never seems to get any smaller. In fact, backlogs tend to do the exact opposite.

I’d like to blame sales for my ridiculous backlog, I mean really it’s criminal to let a Steam Sale go by without buying anything and some publishers have taken to hosting release day sales in hopes of boosting their initial sales stats. The system is rigged to promote sales, I know this and yet, I can’t help myself… I am a willing participant yet another Capitalist scheme…

#TheAnimangaFestival – Set Sailing: Why I Love KuroTsuki

Hey Hey Guys, as many of you know, The Animanga Festival is in full swing! But, if this is your first time hearing about the festival, here’s the cliffnotes explanation: Auri and Nairne over at Manga Toritsukareru Koto doing it big for their third (second) Bloggiversary, by hosting the Animanga Festival. This month long celebration will feature themed posts, events, and games that the entire Aniblogger community is encouraged to participate in throughout the month of October. I just happen to be one of the many bloggers participating in the event and everyone has been putting out a lot of great content and it’s only the second week. I’m a bit behind with my Animanga Festival posts, but I just couldn’t pass up on writing something for the October 9th prompt: Set Sailing!

Ever shipped two characters that were non canon but would actually make a great pair? Well, now’s your chance to shine. Head out, explain your stance to support your ship and set sailing!

-Set Sailing Prompt

And of course anyone that knows me knows that I am a huge fan of one particular Haikyu ship…. KuroTsuki is my OTP Haikyu ship! You can keep your TsukiYama and I don’t wanna hear about KuroKen, for me, Kuroo Tetsuro and Tsukishima Kei are a match made in heaven. So of course, it only made sense that I’d write about KuroTsuki for the Set Sailing prompt, it’d be criminal not to share my love for the BEST SHIP IN THE SERIES!!

Is It Me Or Do Otome Games Have An Unhealthy Relationship With Brothers?

I love otome games, and I’ll sing their praises to anyone willing to sit still long enough, but even I can admit that they have their flaws. The portrayal of the MCs is one of the biggest complaints folks have about otome games, since most are little more than blank slate self insert characters. But, fans and critics alike have been beating that dead horse for years now and I’ve said my piece about otome heroines quite a few times in the past, so I wanted to talk about something different: brothers.

I’ve been sitting on this for awhile now, but I never really knew how to go about talking about otome games and their complicated relationship with siblings, specifically brothers. Now, otome games aren’t the only medium to toe the incest line, especially when there are anime like Oreimo floating around… But, over the years I’ve noticed that there are quite a few otome games that either flat out focus on romancing siblings or slip it in as a “secret” ending and I haven’t really seen many people talking about it.

Wanna Chat With Other Otome Fans? Here Are Some Places You Should Check Out

This post is in response to a lot of things, but recently, I’ve been seeing a lot of otome fans lamenting that they don’t have people IRL that they can talk to about their hobbies. Which I can kind of relate to. I have friends that are into Japanese culture, anime, manga, comics, and other nerdy media, but none of them seem to be interested in otome games. Sure, I’ve convinced one or two to play a game on my laptop when we’ve hung out, but they don’t really play them on their own. And my bestie, bless her has sat by and listened to countless hours of my rampant fangirling about my newest otome crush.

Fangirl.gif

But, aside from that, I don’t really have any IRL otome friends. In fact, I’ve met all of my really good otome buddies online, but with that said most of my online friends are more into anime than they are otome games (though, I have managed to convert a few). So, it got me thinking, where exactly do all the cool otome fans hang out? I mean, we are living in a “social media” age, so there are plenty of ways to connect with people that have similar interests as you. But, it can be a bit intimidating when you first start out, especially since most communities are fairly well established. So, I thought it would be helpful to compile a list of places I lurk check out when I want to chat it up with my fellow otome fans online…

Fangirl Moment: Wistful Summer (Webcomic)

TGIF!! This has been a long time coming, but I’m finally bringing back Fangirl Friday!! I’ve been slowly getting back into my blogging stride and I’m going to be honest, these are my favorite posts to write since I’m really just fangirling about random stuff I’ve come across be they movies, webcomics, anime, books, dramas… I even wrote one about Barack Obama. So, this is one segment I’m excited to bring back from the dead! Since this is the first post in a while, I wanted to make this one really special, so I decided to go with something that combines two of my loves: Boys Love and Webcomics… Don’t believe me? See for yourself, most of my previous Fangirl Moment posts are either BL related, Webcomics, or BL Webcomics… I have my vices and BL is at the top of the list most days.

Wistful Summer.jpeg

So, for this week’s post I wanted to cover MunZi’s ongoing BL webcomic Wistful Summer. It’s a drama filled comic about a guy who spent most of his life crushing on his best friend, but just when he starts to get over his crush a handsome stranger appears. Things only get more complicated when the best friend divorces his wife and starts hinting that maybe he’s been harboring some unrequited feelings of his own… O_O

First. First lie, first kiss, first love. When Henry and Sam first met that summer long ago, Henry learned the power of first love. But…time goes on, people part, summer ends and so too did their blink of a relationship. All but a distant memory now, when Henry and Sam gradually become close again, Henry finds himself feeling those fiery emotions for the first time since that wistful summer.

-Synopsis

The comic was first published online in 2018 by Kakao, a Korean webcomic site, but you can read the comic in English over on Tapas. This is a paid release, but you can read the first couple of chapters for free. In order to read the non-free chapters you’ll need to use Ink, which is just Tapas’s internal currency. Tapas also has weekly free episode rotations, so if you plan accordingly, you can read the whole thing for free. I am not that patient, so I broke down and bought enough Ink to binge the available chapters… and it was worth every damn penny!

D.N. Angel is the Reason I have Commitment Issues with Ongoing Series

So, it was recently brought to my attention that Yukiru Sugisaki would start reviving her long running fantasy romance manga series D.N. Angel this year. This is the first mention of anything new from the series since the author went on hiatus 8 YEARS AGO! Yes, you read that right, it has been 8 years since the release of volume 15 back in 2011 and what’s worse, this isn’t even the first time the series has been on hiatus and I’m pretty damn sure it won’t be the last… so, forgive me if I’m not shouting from the rooftops at the announcement that the series is finally back from the dead.

Some context…

D.N. Angel follows Daisuke Niwa a 13 year old boy who is descended from a long line of phantom thieves. Daisuke is kinda shy and pretty average, despite having been put through a rigorous training regimen by his mother and grandfather. Other than that life is pretty normal! On his 14th birthday he finally plucks up the courage to confess to the girl of his dreams, Risa Harada, but homegirl turns him down hard! Full of teen angst and fueld by his broken heart, Daisuke goes home to mope a bit, thats when he gets hit with magical puberty. His body transforms into that of the handsome phantom thief Dark Mousy (my first anime crush). Daisuke freaks the fuck out, thankfully his mom is around to explain that the transformation is completely normal, having affected all of the Niwa men for generations. The change she explains is triggered by the host’s romantic feelings of love, and will keep happening until Daisuke finds someone who can love him and Dark. The rest of the story focuses on Daisuke’s attempts to balance his normal life with that of his secret phantom thief alter ego. To make matters worse, Dark has his own consciousness within Daisuke which often gets him into trouble as they both struggle to coexist. Then Daisuke goes and falls in love with Risa’s twin sister, Riku who absolutely hates Dark after he stole her first kiss… yeah, and I thought I had problems…

A Beginners Guide to Otome Games: Part 3 – Common Character Archetypes

Hey Hey Heroes, Travelers, and Wandering NPCs, its been a while since the last ‘A Beginners Guide to Otome Games’ post. I’ve been slowly working on bringing this blog back where it was before I took a break, so expect more of my post segments to start cropping back up… eventually. Since its been so long since the last post, I figured this is as good a time as any to explain what these posts are…

A Beginners Guide to Otome Games post series is a crash course on all things otome games, but in a way that’s easy to understand for newbies and folks unfamiliar with the genre. When I started playing otome games I pretty much just spent most of my time figuring things out as I went along and even then I had a lot of questions. So, I wanted to create a series of posts that answers some of the basic otome question to kind of give you guys a feel for different aspects of otome games. This series is for you guys, so at the end of each A Beginners Guide post I’ll have a poll where you, the reader, can vote on the next topic I cover! Last post, you guys voted and I listened, so for Part 3, I’m going to cover  Common Character Archetypes!

*Also, if there is something in this post that you think should be expanded or needs more clarification, please let me know and I will update this post accordingly!

Otome Games I Wish Had an Anime Adaptation

On the heels of the Collar X Malice Unlimited fandisk announcement, Idea Factory and Otomate revealed through their twitter account that Collar X Malice is also getting an anime adaptation in the near future. This is not the first otome game to get an anime adaptation, with Hakuoki, Amnesia Memories, OZMAFIA, and Code Realize to name a few all getting the anime treatment.

For those of you not familiar with Collar X Malice, it’s a mystery, suspense, thriller otome game originally developed by Idea Factory under their Otomate brand in 2016 for PS Vita. The game was later localized by Aksys Games in 2017 for an English language release. The game follows Ichika Hoshino a young police officer in Shinjuku, Tokyo after she becomes the unwitting victim of a mysterious terrorist organization that have been terrorizing the city with several large scale attacks. Ichika is captured by the organization and fitted with a collar set to dispense poison into her neck unless she uncovers the truth behind the attacks. With her life on the line and the fate of the city hanging in the balance, Ichika is approached by five mysterious strangers who offer to help her get to the bottom of the crimes and hopefully save the people of Shinjuku and herself in the process.

The premise alone has everything you need for a great story; action, suspense, mystery, romance… I can’t wait to see what the anime has in store for us (and I sincerely hope they do the story justice). But, that got me thinking, what other otome games would I like to see get an anime adaptation? I mean, really, everyone assumes that otome games are just a lot of romance and that’s it. But, the truth is, otome games have some of the best stories that cover a wide range of subjects and genres that would make for amazing anime series. So, I wracked my brain a bit and came up with a list of otome games I think really deserve to have an anime adaptation.

[Melanin Monday] Why Blackface in Cosplay is NOT Okay

With con season in full swing in most places, anime fans across the country are gearing up for weekends full of otaku fellowship. But, for many one of the highlights of any con are the cosplayers, who dedicate months, sometimes years into carefully crafting their costumes and props in order to pay homage to the media and characters they love.

Cosplay

noun

A portmanteau of the words ‘costume play’, is the practice of dressing up as a character from a movie, book, or video game, especially characters from Japanese media.

Amateurs and professionals alike flock to these otaku meccas in hopes of showing off their hard work, strutting their stuff among the throngs of anime fans eager to share in their love of Japanese culture. Cosplay is a way for fans to express their creativity while also showing their appreciation for the media they love. Some cosplayers strive for accuracy, with carefully constructed costumes that perfectly capture the original source material, while others let their imaginations fly with unique alternative takes on popular characters.

[Melanin Monday] Diversity in Otome Games

Hey Hey Heroes, Travelers, and NPCs, out there it’s Monday, and that means another Melanin Monday post!! I know its been awhile since my last Melanin Monday post (I’ve been slacking off), but, for those of you just joining the party, here’s a little refresher. Melanin Monday is a bi-weekly post series that I started for Black History Month, where I talk about Black and Brown skinned characters in anime, manga, video games, etc., but you guys loved it so much I decided to continue it! This week, I’m looking at diversity in otome games!

Otome games promise a player driven gaming experience, giving players the opportunity to romance a diverse group of characters. But, really how diverse are otome games? Sure they feature characters from a wide range of character archetypes, but when it comes to their appearance, they all seem to fall into the same generic bishounen category. What’s more, mainstream otome games tend to have a distinct lack of racial diversity among their romance options. Western otome games have been more successful at integrating more diverse romance options in their games, with characters from a wide range of backgrounds and ethnicity, but, Japanese otome games are much more restrictive in the types of romance options they offer. But, given that otome games are created with a Japanese audience in mind, this is not wholly unexpected.

However, with an increasing number of Western gamers playing otome games, this lack of diversity could alienate individuals looking for games featuring characters that share similar characteristics to themselves. In recent years, Western otome games and Original English Language Visual Novels (OELVNs) have stepped up to provide a solution by offering games with more diverse romance options that are more reflective of their target audiences. As a woman of color, I appreciate the efforts of Western developers to incorporate diverse characters into their narratives, because it creates an opportunity for representation that may have otherwise not existed.

Melanin Monday: Black Folks Killin’ It in the Oscars

Hey Hey Heroes, Travelers, and NPCs, out there it’s Monday, and that means another Melanin Monday post!! I know its been awhile since my last Melanin Monday post (I’ve been slacking off), but, for those of you just joining the party, here’s a little refresher. Melanin Monday is a bi-weekly post series that I started for Black History Month, where I talk about Black and Brown skinned characters in anime, manga, video games, etc., but you guys loved it so much I decided to continue it!

So, in this week’s Melanin Monday post, I wanted to talk about the Oscars… Yeah, I know, I’m not the only one talking about the Oscars, everybody is talking about the Oscars right now. But, after not one but two Black-led superhero films managed to not only snag quite a few Oscar nominations, but, also WIN awards… well, let’s just say that is grounds for celebration. But, that wasn’t all, the 2019 Oscars was a triumph for women and people of color as well, with films like Roma and BlackKklansman snagging quite a few awards last night.

How To Survive Junji Ito Horror in Five Easy Steps!

Hey Hey Heroes, Travelers, and Wandering NPCs, it’s October and here on Nice Job Beraking It, Hero we’re taking a trip into the depths with a month full of Halloween themed posts. And what better way to celebrate Halloween Month than with the Master of Horror, Junji Ito! He is one of my favorite horror mangaka, crafting some of the best horror manga out there, his works range from quirky black comedies to full on nightmare fuel, and I cannot recommend him enough if you’re looking for something deeply unsettling to read. He has a way of making the mundane terrifying, with his surreal stories and unique characters, you can’t help but get drawn into his tangled web of terror!

While rereading a few of his oneshots, I got to thinking what would I do if I found myself the unwitting victim of one of his many horrors. Hell, most of his stories either end in tragedy, death, or in the off chance he’s in a good mood, bittersweet. There really is no getting away scott free in a Junji Ito story, so I did the next best thing and crafted a list of tips that will at the very least keep you from dying a gruesome painful death… If you’re looking for something slightly more optimistic, check out How To Woo and Otome Guy in 5 Easy Stepsfor everyone else, here are five helpful tips that are sure to give you a fighting chance against, Junji Ito’s classic horrors.

[Melanin Monday] So Is It Just Me or Did They Kill A Lot of Black Folks in Infinity War?!: A Rant

If you happened to stumble upon this post by accident, this will be the last spoiler warning before I start my rant… I will not apologize to anyone that knowingly reads beyond this point and gets spoiled for Infinity War, that’s on you boo.\

infinity war.jpg

So I joined droves of moviegoers in seeing one of the most anticipated superhero films to come out this year, Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War. Ten years of planning and 19 films have lead to this sort of final act in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and don’t get me wrong, I absolutely loved Infinity War, it had everything I could ask for in a superhero film: all the heroes (minus Hawkeye and AntMan, they got put on the bus for this one), action, suspense, witty banter, and one of the biggest emotional sucker punches so far this year. It was an almost perfect film and I applaud Marvel (read: Disney) for pulling it off, if you’d asked me back in 2004 if I thought Marvel would have the monopoly on superhero films, I’d have probably laughed in your face and bopped you on the head with my homemade wand and pulled off on the Hogwarts Express back to Harry Potter-ville.

Blerd About Town: Visiting the Cherry Blossom Trees

Hey Hey Heroes, Travelers, and Wandering NPCs, it’s been awhile since I wrote a decent post here on Nice Job Breaking It, Hero and the reason for that is I’ve been pursuing a lot of non-otome game pursuits. Yes, dear readers I’m afraid I haven’t been playing any games lately, but, I have been going out and exploring DC more, and surprisingly there are quite a few otaku and nerd friendly events going on around the Nation’s Capitol so I figured why not document some of my (mis)adventures around the city, and what better event to kick off this post series than the National Cherry Blossom Festival!

I’ve been living in the DMV area since 2009 and I’ve never actually gone down to see the Cherry Blossom trees, sure I’ve gone to the various Cherry Blossom events around the city and of course I’ve been the Sakura Matsuri, but when it came to the trees themselves, lets just say that the idea of wading through hordes of tourists just to look at trees, just never seemed all that appealing to me. But, this year I decided to channel my inner tourist by making the trek down to the DC Tidal Basin to get a gander at these cherry blossom trees and see if they were really worth all the hype (spoiler alert: they kinda are). But before I get into my Cherry Blossom adventure, here’s a brief history lesson about the Cherry Blossom trees and why the Cherry Blossom Festival is such a big deal here in the Washington, DC area!

The Hero That Stole My Heart: Six Reasons Bakugo Katsuki is My Favorite Hero!

I’m not really a big fan of shounen anime, years of Naruto and Bleach kind of burned me out on the genre as a whole. But, recently I’ve found myself falling in love with shounen anime again and it’s thanks in part to My Hero Academia (Boku no Hero Academia for you elitists out there)! I don’t know what it is about the series, but from the very first episode, this anime made me feel things. It brought back all the excitement and fun I had when I was new to the anime fandom, back when I was enamored with the shinobi in Naruto and the mamodos and bookkeepers of Zatch Bell!

My Hero Academia almost single-handedly restored my love of anime and it is for that reason I was moved to write about the series here on Nice Job Breaking It, Hero. But, rather than talking about the series as a whole, I’d like to shine a spotlight on my absolute favorite character: Bakugo Katsuki!

katsuki 2.png

Look at that smile! Doesn’t it just melt your heart?!

Katsuki is a character that has been very misunderstood, sure he’s a bit rough around the edges, but this hero-in-training stole my heart from the moment he was introduced! Who cares about Deku or Todoroki?! The only character I stand behind is Bakugo Katsuki, he is hands down my favorite character in the series!

[International Women’s Day 2018] My Top 5 Otome Heroines!!

Hey Hey Heroes, Travelers, and Wandering NPCs, it’s International Women’s Day! The one day out of the year when we celebrate the achievements of women throughout history… and if you ask me we should be celebrating women every day of the year and not just on March 8th, because we women are out here slaying the game everyday… all day, but, I digress. I could not let this day pass without doing something to celebrate here on Nice Job Breaking It, Hero (busy schedule be damned)!

IWD-logo.png

So, to celebrate, I’m bringing you guys a list of my top five otome game heroines! Yeah, don’t let the lack of reviews fool you, I am still pretty deep in the Otome Games fandom, and I’ve noticed that otome heroines get a lot of flack from the community as a whole. In fact, we’re often quick to make excuses for a “terrible” love interest, who treats the MC like crap, but when we get an MC with “no backbone” we immediately write her off as an affront to feminist ideals and a step backwards for all woman kind… I, myself am guilty of bashing heroines every now and again… but, seriously otome heroines get a tough break, so in order to rectify that I’m spotlighting five phenomenal otome heroines that hold it down in their respective games. It’s hard work dealing with your own personal harem, and these ladies go above and beyond the call of duty.

Why Are All the Black People Slaves?!: A Short Rant about Taarradhin

I was originally going to post this as part of my Melanin Monday segment, but, WordPress decided that my original post was a bit too radical and saw fit to DELETE EVERYTHING I WROTE! But, thankfully despite that I was able to salvage most of it with the help of WP’s nifty ‘History’ feature, so, it wasn’t a total loss…

I want to first clarify that this is not a review, but a critique of Cyanide Tea’s decision to create a game that featured characters of color, specifically Black and brown skinned characters, as slaves in a game that allows the player to romance said slaves. Let me say that again, THIS IS NOT A REVIEW OF Taarradhin! I will write a proper review some time in the near future, but this post, is most certainly not a review, so if you are expecting a review, come back later. For everyone else, the opinions reflected in this post are my own, so, if you are uncomfortable with discussions of race or slavery, you might want to check out one of my other game reviews or discussion pieces

Before I start this rant, I want to give you guys a bit of background about Taarradhin.

Taarradhin is a Pay-What-You-Want original English language visual novel (OELVN) from Cyanide Tea (Lorelei and Auro-Cyanide). The game was created for NaNoReNo 2014 and features two potential love interests (GxG and GxB) with five endings. It’s a rather short game taking between 30 mins to an hour to complete.

Synopsis

A seven-year drought plagues the entire region surrounding the country of Nishtif, leading people to wonder if their goddess Scheknt has abandoned them. In contrast, young noblewoman Neqtia has lived a comfortable life insulated from hardship and suffering. One of the poorer surrounding countries, Djedi, sends their usual tribute of natural resources and livestock to Nishtif in exchange for the larger country’s aid and protection. Rumors that two attractive slaves are among the cargo intrigue Neqtia. What lies in store for her after the slaves are brought to live at her family estate…?

How To Woo an Otome Guy in Five Easy Steps!

Contrary to what some of you may believe playing otome games is hard work. Wooing 2D hotties is no easy feat, in some cases it’s harder than actually going out and getting a real lover… go figure. There’s a trick to it that can only be mastered through vigorous training and hours upon hours of in game practice. But, you dear readers are in luck! I did the hard work for you and compiled a list of five tried and true steps for anyone looking to bag the 2D hottie of their dreams! Yes, you read that right, I have taken it upon myself to write up a 5 step guide for wooing your otome game lover!

First, let me clarify, that this list is not meant to be used for wooing real life lovers… just, don’t, unless you’re cool with a little jail time. This is meant to be a tongue and cheek critique of some of the “unhealthy” methods used to woo love interests in otome games. As with any list, your mileage may vary, this is a very general list, so some tips may not work with every game or every character, just use your best judgement and of course have fun! This is meant to be fun…

Junjou Romantica is Problematic As Hell!- Season 1 Review

So I don’t usually write anime reviews here, but, after watching season 1 of Junjou Romantica I have some strong feelings about the series as a whole, none of them good. I should clarify that I rather enjoy problematic BL/yaoi, hell, I absolutely adore Yamane Ayano’s Finder Series, it’s a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine. But, the infinitely lighter BL classic Junjou Romantica just rubs me the wrong way. So why am I “okay” with Finder, but not okay with Junjou? Well, part of it has to do with when I started both series.

I started Finder rather early on in my BL/yaoi journey, at a time when I was still figuring what I liked and didn’t like from the genre. The steamy smut, was definitely appealing, but upon subsequent readings (especially those first few volumes) I find myself actively cringing at how… problematic the whole thing is.

On the other hand, I started Junjou long after I’d been in the BL fandom, so I just don’t have any nostalgia for the series the same way I do with Finder. To make matters worse, I have read and watched some truly amazing BL/yaoi over the years, and it has spoiled me a bit for some of the older much more flawed “classics” the genre has to offer. So, when I finally sat down to watch Junjou Romantica, a series people have been recommending to me for years, lets just say I had high hopes.

Spoiler Alert: I was not amused, in fact I was horrified to discover that this was the series that sparked many a BL journey! This is the BL anime that people fondly celebrate and praise… Junjou Romantica is problematic as hell! But, does that really make it a bad anime? Or is it a seriously flawed, but ultimately salvageable anime?

Eh, that’s still up for debate. So, in a rather unprecedented turn of events I’m actually going to attempt to write a proper anime review here on Nice Job Breaking It, Hero (I already write reviews over at MANGA.TOKYO, so don’t get used to it)… Also, y’all can thank Kat over at GrimmGirl.com for this, this is purely for her… Let’s get this review on the road, shall we?

Melanin Monday: Why We Need Quality Representation- A Short Rant

Hey Hey Heroes, Travelers, and Wandering NPCs, it’s Black History Month once again and with it comes the revival of Melanin Monday, the post series where I talk about the representation of Black and brown characters in pop culture. While I mainly focus on the nerdier side of the pop culture spectrum, from time to time I will cover more personal posts about my experiences as a Black nerd.

This started as part of Black History Month 2017, but you guys liked it so much that I decided to keep it going, albeit rather sporadically. However, for the month of February I will try to post one of these every Monday.

This week I didn’t really have anything planned since this post coincides with my OWLS Blog Tour post, and I am notorious for waiting until the last minute to do anything… So rather than focus on a particular form of media, I’m just going to talk about the importance of representation in general… as a rant.

[KuroTsuki Day 2018] My 11 Favorite KuroTsuki FanFics!!

ks day

LOOK AT THESE DORKS!!!

It’s 1/11 and that means it’s KuroTsuki Day!! Awww yeah, it’s finally my time to shine!! As many of you that don’t know, I’m a huge fan of Haikyuu, but did you also know that I am a supporter of the Kuroo Tetsurou/ Tsukishima Kei ship?! Well, if you didn’t you’ve been living under a rock, since fellow blogger Kat (GrimmGirl.com) and I have a bit of a friendly rivalry going on, she supports TsukiYama, while I support the far superior ship KuroTsuki…. there have been many a Twitter battle dedicated to these ships. But, that’s neither here nor there, since my ship is obviously the best! #ShotsFired  #KuroTsuki4Lyfe I kid…

So, in honor of this magical day, I am going to share eleven of my favorite Kuroo x Tsukishima fanfics in hopes of swaying some of you over to the dark side!

evil laugh

But, seriously, I really like this ship, so I hope you guys will enjoy these fics as much as I did (and still do)! So let’s get this show on the road shall we! (links are in the titles)

Otome Debates: Localization

Hey Hey Heroes, Travelers, and Wandering NPCs, as promised, here’s the first official Otome Debates post! Going into 2018 I wanted to branch out a bit from just otome game reviews, by adding some editorial styled otome games related content. The idea is to produce informative content about otome games that both fans and non-fans of the genre can enjoy. So what should you expect from this and other Otome Debates posts?

This is a brand spankin’ new bi-weekly (Tuesdays) post series where I talk about a few of the “controversial” topics floating around the online otome community. I’ll be covering a wide range of topics within the scope of otome games and their connected media. You don’t necessarily have to be familiar with otome games or the online otome games community to enjoy these posts, since they will mostly offer a general overview of the topic with points from both sides.

Otome Debates: Introduction

This week’s topic is one that has caused a lot of buzz in the online otome community. It’s a topic that has been at the center of some of the most heated Twitter battles… a topic that has divided the community for years… I wish I was joking, it seems like every time an English language version of an otome game is released in the West, the online otome games community implodes. Friend turn on friends, members of the #OtomeArmada immediately scramble to opposing sides and the rampant passive aggressive tweets begin to fly… But, what is “localization” and is it really worth all the fuss?

A Beginners Guide to Otome Games: Part 1 “What Are Otome Games?!”

Hey Hey Heroes, Travelers, and Wandering NPCs, I’m bringing you guys a super special awesome new post series that was requested by my blogging buddy, the lovely Lita. I’d been playing around with the idea for an ‘otome games for dummies’ series for awhile now, but, I never really knew where to start or what all to cover, until Lita commented on my Otome Debates intro post asking for a post introducing otome games in general. So, I ran with it, but since I don’t do things by half measures, I decided to make this a full blown post series!

In these posts, I’ll give you guys a crash course on all things otome games, but, in a way that is easy to understand for folks unfamiliar with the genre. So, if you’ve been curious about otome games, but didn’t know where to start or who to ask, this is the place for you!

*Also, if there is something in this post that you think should be expanded or needs more clarification, please let me know and I will update this post accordingly!

Right, so now that all the formalities are out of the way, lets get down to the basics of Otome Games! This week’s topic is…. What Are Otome Games?!

*Edit 5/8/18: Added some examples of otome games.

Otome Debates: Introduction

Hey Hey Heroes, Travelers, and Wandering NPCs, welcome to the introductory post of the new Otome Debates series! *throws confetti* Technically, this series won’t start until next Tuesday, but before I spring it on you guys I wanted to go over what to expect from the series when it kicks off next week.

What The Series is About…

This is a brand spankin’ new bi-weekly (Tuesdays) post series where I talk about a few of the “controversial” topics floating around the online otome community. I’ll be covering a wide range of topics within the scope of otome games and their connected media. You don’t necessarily have to be familiar with otome games or the online otome games community to enjoy these posts, since they will mostly offer a general overview of the topic with points from both sides.

The Format…

The basic format will be as follows:

  • Introduction: Brief overview of the topic and an introduction to the various viewpoints people in the otome community have about said topic.
  • Viewpoint Breakdown: This will make up the bulk of the post (roughly 2-4 paragraphs) and focus on fleshing out the opposing viewpoints of the topic. I’ll highlight the main points of each opposing viewpoint, while offering examples to support or refute each argument. I will try to remain as impartial as possible in this section in order to give readers a better understanding of the subject matter without my ickle feelings getting in the way.
  • My Personal Opinion: Like it says, I’ll offer up my opinion on the topic and where I stand on the issues presented in the Viewpoint (name to be changed) section. I’ll try to keep this short, but if I feel strongly about the topic, it might be longer…
  • Conclusion/Wrap Up: A summary of the points presented in the post followed by a poll, so that you guys can weigh in on which side of the debate you stand on (anonymously). You can also share your opinions in the comments section and/or ask for clarification on a point brought up in the post.

Like I said, I won’t be unrolling this bad boy until next week Tuesday, so be on the lookout for that. As a show of good faith, I’ll reveal the topic for the inaugural post… *drumroll* Otome Game Localizations! Yeah, people have strong feelings about localization, so I figured it’d be the perfect way to kick off the new year!!

What do you think of the new post series? Think it’s a good idea? Do you have a topic suggestion? Wanna chat? Drop a line in the comments section (I promise, I don’t bite…much). As always THANK YOU FOR READING!!

I Ship It: 5 Non-Canon Couples That Totally Should Have Been Canon- BL Edition

Have you ever seen two characters that you knew were perfect for one another? Friends that have known each other since they were in diapers. Or maybe bitter rivals that hate each other, but still somehow harbor a deep respect for one another. Or perhaps, they’re the unstoppable baka duo on a high school sports team. I’m talking about those bonds forged through a deep emotional connection between two characters, the kind of bond that transcends the confines of the author’s original intent! RELATIONSHIPS BORN FROM THE HOPES AND DREAMS OF FANS… BEAUTIFUL DELUSIONS THAT GIVE A MIDDLE FINGER TO THE CANON SENSIBILITIES OF THE CREATORS!!

It’s shipping.

I’m talking about shipping…

Whether you love it or hate it, shipping is an integral part of every fandom. If two characters so much as breathe the same air as one another, I guarantee there is a person out there that ships it. But, are shippers really as crazy as folks make them out to be? Is there any basis for their pairings? Are there secret hints hidden in the source material that supports these ships? *shrugs noncommittally* I’m kind of on the fence about shipping, on one hand I do ship characters and I quite enjoy fanfiction, but, I also don’t go out of my way to ship X character with Y character while watching or reading something… that is unless the subtext is blatantly obvious, and that’s how this post was born!

There are times when the subtext is just so in your face you can’t help but connect the dots. In this post I’m going to spotlight 5 non-canon pairings that should have been canon, because… reasons!! This list is not in any particular order, I just listed the pairings in the order they came to me, which I suppose could be used to suss out which pairings are my favorite… but, it’s not. My real OTP isn’t even on this list because as much as I hate to admit it, there really isn’t any in series evidence for the pairing… not that it stops me from loving that particular ship. So, all aboard, this ship is about to set sail!!

Tag Game- Five Flaming Hotties- Otome Edition

fiveflaminghottiesnew

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL, it’s been forever since I participated in a tag game so thank you Mel ( Mel in Animeland) for including me in this one. I will admit that when I received the WordPress notification about the tag I started considering which hotties to use for this post and sadly, I had a really hard time narrowing the list down to just five hotties… I mean, I love all my baes and husbandos for different reasons so picking just five… it was a struggle. Also, I’m doing things a bit different with this post, all of my choices will be from games (heavy on the otome baes).

The rules

  • Mention the name of the blog you were tagged by, as well as the creators of this game Realweegiemidget Reviews and Thoughts All Sorts to all blogs involved and including the picture above.
  • List five of your greatest hotties from TV and/or film, i.e. crushes/objects of your affection, including musicians or sports stars too.
  • Tell us how you were introduced to them and why you like them/what appeals.
  • Add some appealing pictures.
  • Tag seven bloggers for their Five Flaming Hotties.
  • Post the rules.

Fangirl Moment: Her Impact

Hey Hey Heroes, Travelers and Wandering NPCs, it’s that special time of the week again! Friday!! TGIF! And with the end of the the work week comes yet another super special awesome Fangirl Moment post, the series where I feature interesting media I’ve come across during the week (or whenever). I’ve covered a wide range of topics in theses posts, from books to film to anime and manga to webcomics, the sky’s the limit for my rampant fangirling!

Last week was my boy, Kuroo Tetsurou’s birthday, so I did a list of the Top 5 Reasons Kuroo is the Captain of My Heart, if you missed it, definitely check it out! But, if that’s not your style, be sure to check out one of my other Fangirl Moment posts, by either clicking the weekly series tab from the menu or by clicking… HERE!

IMG_20171201_110104.jpg

This week, I’ll be covering an original web comic series Her Impact, an upcoming sports comic that features a woman of color as the protagonist. Y’all know how I feel about POCs in my media, so when the writer, Mikel Miles brought this amazing concept to my attention, I was all over it. Plus, I’m a huge fan of fighter anime and manga,  Ashita no Joe (Tomorrow’s Joe)! I will forever recommend that series, it’s like perfection!! *ahem* Got a little off track there, but, Her Impact is set to be released in 2018, but Mikel was kind enough to send me a copy of Issue #0. It’s a short demo chapter, but more than enough to give me a feel of the story, and I must say I am curious to see how everything pans out in the end.

Fangirl Moment: Kuroo Tetsurou

Hey Hey all you wonderful Heroes, Travelers, and Wandering NPCs! It’s Friday and that means another Fangirl Moments post, the series where I fangirl over anything and everything, from anime and manga to movies and books, everything up for grabs!

Last week, I covered the animated Netflix series, Voltron: Legendary Defender, so if you missed that post definitely check it out!! This week I’m doing things a little differently, instead of covering a form of media, I’m going to talk about a specific character and instead of doing a character analysis, I’m going to do a Top 5 list, because *whispers* I’m writing this from my work computer and my supervisor is coming into the office to shadow…. and this post is kind of time sensitive.

TetsuroKuuro

So today, November 17th is the birthday of my favorite Haikyuu captain, Kuroo “Bedhead” Tetsurou, and in honor of his b-day, I’m going to write about the Top 5 Reasons Kuroo is the Captain of My Heart!! Okay that sounded way better in my head…

Melanin Monday: Why We Need Black Panther

I recently saw Thor: Ragnarok, and while I think it is one of the better films to come out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date, though I will admit a lot of that had to do with the tone of the film, rather than the actual plot (but that’s a discussion best saved for another day). In fact, I absolutely love the MCU, the good, the bad, and the ugly (I’m looking at you Hulk and Incredible Hulk), but there is one film that I am looking forward to the most from the MCU… and no, it’s not Infinity Wars Pt 1…. I mean, I am, that shit looks like it’s going to be epic, but even more than that, the film I am most looking forward to is Black Panther!

I still remember the first time I saw the teaser trailer, it literally gave me chills, hell, I still get chills every single time I watch this trailer. Don’t get me wrong, T’Challa is not the first black superhero to grace the silver screen (and God willing, he won’t be the last), but Black Panther has something the Blade franchise, Spawn, and of course the comedies like Blankman and Meteor Man never quite seemed to capture with their Black super hero leads. Don’t get me wrong, each film mentioned above, has it’s merits, but each one is missing a bit of that inherent Blackness that makes Black Panther stand out as something truly revolutionary.

Fangirl Moment: Voltron Legendary Defender

Hey Hey Heroes, Travelers and Wandering NPCs! I know it’s not Friday… well, maybe it is somewhere in the world… maybe? *awkward laugh* I’ve been kind of AWOL with this old blog for the past few months, forgive me, I’ve been trying to get my life together, but I’m back… kind of. It’s gonna take me a bit to get everything back up and running (I’m a bit rusty), but I recently watched an animated show that I just had to write about! So, while the blogging spirit is flowing through me, I figured I’d best get this post out, before I get distracted again… This week’s Fangirl Moment post will be about… *Drumroll* Voltron: Legendary Defender!

Voltron.jpg

Team Voltron (Front L-R) Pidge, Shiro ❤ , Keith (Back L-R) Hunk, Coran, Allura, and my boy LANCE KYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA *ahem* I mean Lance

Yeah, I got sucked into the Voltron fandom…. I mean, I’d seen a few reruns of the 80’s series when I was a kid, but I never really got into it. Giant robots and explosions weren’t my thing… okay, Power Rangers aside… So, when the reboot was announced I just didn’t pay it much mind. But, after seeing tons of fan art and hearing countless people praise the series, I figured why not give it a try… I’m lying, I finished watching Stranger Things 2 and I needed something to watch while I crocheted and Voltron seemed like the perfect background noise. I never dreamed I’d make it through the first episode, let alone binge all four seasons in the span of a week, but here we are and I NEED MORE!!! So, you guys get to listen to my rampant fangirl ramblings about Voltron! Yay!

Fangirl Moment: Roommates (Seok Young)

TGIF Heroes and Travelers, it’s Friday and that means it’s time for another Fangirl Moment, the series of posts where I spotlight media I think you guys should check out! This week I’m covering a Korean webcomic I discovered a little while ago, Roommates (aka Can’t Confess) by Seok Young, translated by Han. This is a fun comic about two friends that secretly harbor feelings for one another, things only get a bit more complicated when they suddenly become roommates… It’s just as awkward and hilarious as you’d imagine!

The series was originally published digitally by Mr. Blue back in 2015, but was eventually picked up by Spottoon.com for an English language release. This is a paid release, but you can read the first five chapters for free and by creating an account with the site you can also earn keys that will unlock additional episodes for free. Spottoon also has weekly/monthly free episode rotations, so if you plan accordingly, you can read the whole thing for free.

If you aren’t in the mood for BL, I highly recommend checking out one of my other Fangirl Moment posts (there are a ton to choose from) by clicking right, HERE, I cover a range of topics so I’m sure you’ll find something worthwhile over there!! For everyone else, let’s get this show on the road shall we?

Fangirl Moment: Harukaze no Étranger

TGIF! It’s that time of the week again, it’s Fangirl Friday!! WOOT! I’ve been on a bit of a BL manga binge this week, so it seemed fitting that this week’s post be about one of the titles I read.

This week I’ll be covering the Kii Kanna’s ongoing slice of life boys love manga, Harukaze no Étranger, the sequel to her 2013 manga Umibe no Étranger. The series was released back in 2014 and as of this writing, comprises of 2 volumes, with a third on the way. While it’s prequel was was licensed in English by Renta!, this series has not been licensed for an English language audience, however it’s currently being fan translated by Stranger by the Sea Scans!

Don’t Do It: Where I Stand on Piracy in the Otome Community

This post has been a long time coming, and while I have been relatively silent on the whole thing, this is something that needed to be said. Now, there are two reasons I have been quiet about this and they are as follows: One, I know some of the purists out there will find my stance a bit “controversial” (mind you I legit made air quotes when I said that) and I didn’t want to deal with the backlash from that when I was just getting my start… believe it or not I am sensitive about that sort of thing. Two, I was a pirate myself and I had no desire to draw attention to myself by making any claims one way or the other, again in order to avoid backlash…

control your emotions

Before you guys start sharpening your axes and grabbing your pitchforks, I’ll have you know I am reformed and believe me, I have the bank statements to prove it! So, I more or less have a pretty strong opinion about people pirating games, however, you should note that I am not a purist in any sense of the word, so my stance is double sided. I am prepared for a bit of backlash with this one and honestly, you’d be pretty hard pressed to change my opinion on this topic since I have literally been on both sides of the debate. But, I do encourage you all to share your thoughts on this topic in the comments section, however, keep the personal attacks to yourself. I am not against telling someone to *clears throat* “Go fuck themselves”, and that’s literally all the warning I plan on giving, because I do not tolerate personal attacks.

*Disclaimer: This post contains my thoughts and my opinions about piracy and such I tend to use rather colorful language when discussing things I am passionate about, be warned that there will be a bit of swearing involved in this post. I could have censored this post, but I didn’t!

[Guest Blogger] Why Are We Attracted to Anime Bishounen & Bishoujo?

Hello Heroes and Travelers, today we have a special guest post from the lovely, Arria Cross from over at Fujinsei!! Arria approached me about guest blogging here a little while ago and I was more than happy to oblige! Also be on the look out for my guest post on her site soon!! So join me in welcoming her to Nice Job Breaking It, Hero!! So without further ado, I’m gonna turn things over to Arria!!

Hello, folks! My name is Arria Cross, blogger of Fujinsei, an entertainment blog featuring anime, manga, Japanese & otaku culture. Big thanks to my friend Naja for allowing me to guest post here in Nice Job Breaking It, Hero. Yay!

“Husbando” and “waifu” are now very common terms within the fandom to refer to fictional characters in anime, manga, or games that you would like to be your husband or wife. Many fans, however, use these terms interchangeably with anime crush.

Non-fans may view us as weird, obsessive freaks. Viral news about a Japanese gamer marrying (not legally) a game character back in 2009 and a Japanese company offering marriage certificates with 2D anime brides just strengthen misconceptions about us. Before anything else, I would like to clarify that these examples are extreme and do not apply to all fans. Most of us may call our 2D crushes “husbando” or “waifu”, but this does not necessarily mean that we’ll go as far as actually “marry” them in real life. In our fantasies, maybe.

Fangirl Moment: Ohayou To Oyasumi To Sono Ato Ni

TGIF! It’s that time of the week again, it’s Fangirl Friday!! WOOT! I know I said I’d write about Shunju Aono’s comedy slice of life manga series, I’ll Give It My All… Tomorrow, but I recently came across another manga that ignited my fangirl spirit, to the point that I just had to write about it, so, I’ll Give It My All… Tomorrow will have to wait until next week, which in and of itself is kind of poetic. *ahem*

So, for this week’s Fangirl Moments post I wanted to cover a BL manga I came across the other day. I know, I know, I can hear the collective groans of all you BL naysayers out there, sorry, not sorry.

My Top 10 Favorite Generation Six Pokemon

It’s been a long time since I wrote my last Pokemon Top 10 list, I originally intended to have all of these posts done before the release of Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon, but one thing lead to another… ah well, better late than never! This time around, I’ll be covering my Top Ten Gen  6 Pokémon. So let’s get this party started…

kalos

The sixth generation games brought Pokemon to the third dimension with improved 3D graphics and a whole host of interactive features! While liked all of the new advancements and features added to the Gen VI games, I wasn’t quite so impressed with all the new Pokemon that were introduced this time around… they just weren’t as memorable. In fact, I think this was the generation with the fewest new Pokemon rounding out at just 72 critters to capture.

Melanin Monday: Otome Games/ Visual Novels Featuring Black & Brown Characters

Hey, hey all you wonderful Heroes and Travelers out there it’s Monday, and that means another Melanin Monday post!! For those of you just joining us, Melanin Monday is a  bi-weekly post series that I started for Black History Month, where I talk about Black and Brown skinned characters in anime, manga, video games, etc., but you guys loved it so much I decided to continue it!

Since this is an otome game blog, I figured at least one of these Melanin Monday posts should be about Black and brown characters in otome games/visual novels. So I compiled a list of games that featured characters with darker skin tones. This isn’t a comprehensive list of every game with dark skinned characters, but it does the trick for now. Also, most of these titles are English language visual novels since they tend to feature more characters of color than Japanese otome games… but, that’s a discussion for another day.

Fangirl Moment: Star vs the Forces of Evil

It’s gonna get a little weird, gonna get a little wild this Fangirl Friday, because this week I’m covering an animated series that is anything but normal… I’m talkin’ rainbows, I’m talkin’ puppies, for this week’s Fangirl Moment post I wanted to write about the American animated series Star vs. the Forces of Evil!

Some of you should recognize Star as the topic that didn’t win last week’s Twitter poll, but I absolutely adore this show, so I figured why not cover it this week instead! Since the second season wrapped up a few months ago I am seriously suffering from Star withdrawal… so I hope this post will hold me over until the season 3 premiere later this Summer…

Fangirl Moment: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

TGIF! Here we are again with another Fangirl Friday! I know it’s been awhile since the last Fangirl Moments post. Every time I got ready to write one, something else would come up and before I knew it a few weeks had breezed by… I’ll do my best to keep this from happening again, but, hey, life happens… Also THANK YOU to everyone that voted for this topic in the Twitter poll I ran, you guys were a huge help!!

power rangers 1

L to R: Billy, Trini, Tommy, Jason, Kimberly, and Zack

So this week I’m feeling a bit nostalgic, what with the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers film reboot coming out next week and the Twitch MMPR marathon going on right now, I’m in full blown Power Rangers mode! Now, as much as I love the Power Rangers, I’m only going to cover the seasons based on the Super Sentai season Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger… because #notmyrangers!

Melanin Monday: Six Sensational Black Superheroes You Should Know

Hey, hey all you wonderful Heroes and Travelers out there it’s Monday, and that means another Melanin Monday post!! For those of you just joining us, Melanin Monday is a  bi-weekly post series that I started for Black History Month, where I talk about Black and Brown skinned characters in anime, manga, video games, etc., but you guys loved it so much I decided to continue it!

As a Black woman and self proclaimed nerd it really means a lot to me when I see positive images of my people in media. There are so many hurtful stereotypes and images about Black and brown skinned individuals out there and it breaks my heart, so I decided to throw some positive energy out there by combining my love of my brown skin and my love of all things nerdy… two things that have never been mutually exclusive in my heart. I am and will always be a Black Nerd… or Blerd!  So, for this week’s Melanin Monday post I’m spotlighting six spectacular Black superheroes!!

I Kinda Like That Salty Middle Blocker: 11 Reasons I ❤ Tsukishima Kei!

So kicking off March Megane Madness is none other than Tsukishima Kei from Haikyuu!! Now, it’s no secret that I am absolutely head over heels for this salty middle blocker, if you’ve been living under a rock, or if you doubt the depths of my obsession, I highly recommend you check out my Twitter and Tumblr accounts… They’re practically digital Tsukki shrines. *cough* So when I decided to do a month long tribute to megane men, I just knew that this bespectacled blonde would be the one to start things off!

Tsukishima1.png

After thinking long and hard about how best to showcase the light of my life, my beautiful moonbeam… sorry, I mean, rather than tarnish my beloved Tsukki’s good name with a half-assed character analysis, I decided to write up a list of all the reasons I ❤ Tsukishima Kei. But, because that list would probably go on forever, I decided to narrow the list down to just 11 items… because he’s Karasuno’s number 11…duh! Note, that this is just an excuse for me to fangirl about Tsukki, so expect a lot of exclamation marks and a few fangirl squeals!!!

Melanin Monday: I Am Not Your Stereotype- Racial Representation in Anime [Part II]

Hey, hey all you wonderful Heroes and Travelers out there it’s Monday, and that means another Melanin Monday post!! For those of you just joining us, Melanin Monday is a special weekly post series that I started for Black History Month, where I talk about Black and Brown skinned characters in anime, manga, video games, etc.

I was originally going to end the series at the end of the month, but due to the positive feedback, I will continue Melanin Mondays!! However, another weekly post series on top of all the other stuff I have to write for this blog would be a bit too much for me to handle, so I’m making this a bi-weekly series instead. So expect a new Melanin Monday post every other Monday until I get tired of writing them…

Last week I did a Top 5 List of My Favorite Black Male Anime Characters and this week, since it’s the final Monday of Black History Month, I’m going to revisit a topic I talked about two weeks ago: the representation of Black characters in anime. But, if you all will remember, that post focused on the negative portrayals of Black characters in anime, so this week, I wanted to look at the flip side of that, the positive portrayals!

*Disclaimer: I realize that this is a touchy subject for some people, but I want to let you all know right now, that while comments are welcome, I will not tolerate any personal attacks or overtly nasty comments. If you can’t discuss this post in a respectful and civilized manner, then keep your hands off the keyboard… I promise you I will not be very forgiving of anyone that uses my comments section as such! 😀

Fangirl Moment: Free Iwatobi Swim Club

TGIF! Here we are again with another Fangirl Friday! I have been sucked into sports anime hell once again… I don’t know what to tell you guys, this anime was just supposed to be background noise while I worked on some blogging stuff. But, before I knew it, I’d breezed through 10 episodes and hadn’t made any headway on my posts…So, what pray tell was the name of this captivating anime?

*mumbles indistinctly* F…e… Oh you didn’t catch that? *clears throat* It’s that swimming anime… the one with the *ahem* gratuitous fanservice, you know the one…

free-fanservice

[Insert fangirl squeal]

It’s Free: Iwatobi Swim Club… What can I say, I’m weak to scantily clad boys! Oh, did I mention they spend most of the show soaking wet? I didn’t? Well, let me correct that right now. The guys of Free spend the better part of each episodes in tight fitting swimwear with water droplets glistening on their perfectly animated torsos… *fans self* It suddenly got a little hot in here, and is anyone else thirsty?

Melanin Monday: My Top 5 Favorite Black Male Anime Characters

Hey, hey all you wonderful Heroes and Travelers out there it’s Monday, and that means another Melanin Monday post!! For those of you just joining us, Melanin Monday is a special weekly post series that I started for Black History Month (I might be persuaded to continue the series, if interest is high enough), where I talk about Black and Brown skinned characters in anime, manga, video games, etc. Last week I switched things up a bit, with an op-ed like piece on the negative portrayals of black characters in anime and I’m not gonna lie, it wound up being pretty ranty! So for this week’s post, I wanted to transition to something a bit more chill…

Two weeks back I spotlighted  My Favorite Black Female Anime Charactersfive phenomenal women of color that I felt everyone should know about… Well, this week, I’m giving the fellas a chance to shine. These fierce fellas know how to take care of business! Because I think all the men on this list are fantastic, this won’t be a ranked list, I love them all equally!!

Fangirl Moment: Don’t Blame Me

TGIF! Here we are again with another Fangirl Friday! This week I’m covering one of the first BL manga I ever read! So when I saw it on sale on the Juné site, I wasted no time snapping it up. Of course I reread it for this post, and OMG, I fell in love with the story all over again… I’m talking about the yaoi classic, Don’t Blame Me (Ore wa Wakarunai) by Yugi Yamada!

dont blame me banner

For those of you that have been following me for a while, you might recognize this manga from my Top 5 BL/Yaoi Titles post, as the series that showed me there was more to BL than sex. This a heartwarming manga and one of my all time favorites!!

Fangirl Moment: Hot Gimmick

TGIF! Here we are again with another Fangirl Friday! This week I’m covering a manga that’s just so bad it’s good. There are so many reasons to hate this manga, unnecessary angst, drama, questionable romantic relationships, just to name a few, but for some reason I can’t bring myself to condemn it and believe me I tried! I’m talking about the shoujo manga,  Hot Gimmick by Mika Aihara!

hot-gimmick-2

I have never read a manga so problematic before in my life, but there’s a beauty to it, albeit a twisted and rather cringe worthy kind of beauty… This manga is like watching a really bad soap opera or those telenovelas, you just have to see where all the madness leads, even if a little piece of your soul dies in the process.

Melanin Monday: My Top 5 Favorite Black Female Anime Characters

Hello all you wonderful Heroes and Travelers, it’s Black History Month here in the States, and I wanted to do something to celebrate it here on Nice Job Breaking It, Hero! As a Black nerd, I love it when I see characters that look like me in anime, on tv, and in video games. But, more times than not, they’re reduced to side characters or insulting stereotypes, so I want to use this month to highlight a few outstanding black and brown skinned characters. So every Monday from now until the end of the month, will be hence forth known as Melanin Monday!! As of right now this is just a one month thing, but if you guys like it, I might be persuaded to extend it!

So for my first Melanin Monday’s post, I wanted to write about five of my all time favorite Black female anime character!! Each of these beautiful brown sistas, are phenomenal women that shine in their respective anime series! Because I think all the ladies on this list are fantastic, this won’t be a ranked list, I love them all equally!!

Oh, before I kick things off, I want to say a huge thank you to Hazel of Archi-Anime for making the super special awesome Melanin Mondays banner!! She did a fantastic job with it and I can’t thank her enough for doing it on such short notice!! *hugs*

Fangirl Moment: Kokoro Control

TGIF! Here we are again with another Fangirl Friday! I went a little overboard reading Haikyuu DJs last week and this week, so I figured why not share my new obsession with you guys? Generally I’m not much of a shipper, but I will admit that I’m partial to the Eren x Levi pairing from Attack on Titan and the Kageyama x Hinata pairing from Haikyuu. But, I’ll save the angsty AoT stuff for another day… *ahem* I think KageHina is the cutest thing there ever was!! So, this week I’m gonna cover one of my favorite KageHina DJs…. *drumroll* Kokoro Control!!

While some folks credit doujinshi (DJs) as the medium that sparked their love of Boys Love/Yaoi, my journey was quite the opposite. I only discovered the wonderful world of DJs after I’d already fallen hopelessly into BL hell, so this is still relatively new territory for me. Ah, yeah, so for those of you that have no idea what a DJ is, or if you need a refresher, I’ve included the wiki definition below:

Dōjinshi is the Japanese term for self-published works, usually magazines, manga or novels. Dōjinshi are often the work of amateurs, though some professional artists participate as a way to publish material outside the regular industry.

Sinister Specs: My Top Six Sadistic Megane

I kinda sorta have a thing for megane characters… there’s just something hot about a man in glasses that really gets my blood pumping! Ray Bans, dark frames, wire frames, bifocals, trifocals, fashion lenses, *fans self* I love them all! Give a man glasses and he instantly becomes 10x hotter in my eyes… Now, I will admit that I’m partial towards megane characters with dark hair, but I’m not picky, all megane men are welcome in my harem!!

So a little while ago my megane bias was put to the test by MelinAnimeland, Heyitszel, and Jill… They wanted to see just how far my megane obsession went by presenting me with a truly despicable megane character, one that should have been a huge turn off for anyone in their right mind. But, you see my love for bespectacled hotties transcends reason,  however, their attempt to shake my bias gave me an idea. Why not write an entire post about my all time favorite sadistic megane characters?!  Yes, the whip cracking, megane characters that set my heart aflame with their icy bespectacled gaze!! So without further ado, my Top 6 Favorite Sadistic Megane!!

*Disclaimer: I’m not gonna lie, most of these guys are completely horrible, and I in no way condone their actions. This post may contain some triggers for some folks, including, but not limited to the mention of sexual assault and abuse. I don’t go into detail about any of that, but I do mention it in passing…

[OWLS Blog Tour] How the Moral Ambiguity of the Bounty Hunter Disrupts the Hero Narrative of Mainstream Anime

Hey hey all you Heroes and Travelers out there today I’m bringing you all a very special post!! Back in December I mentioned that I’d joined OWLS: Otaku Warriors of Liberty and Self-Respect, a group of bloggers and vlogger that hope to spread a message of acceptance and understanding through thoughtful community activism!

Fangirl Moment: Barack Obama

TGIF! It’s been a long week, but here we are again with another Fangirl Friday!! Last week I covered a hilarious video that spoke to my fangirl heart like no other video before it, and this week I’m going to switch gears a bit. With the inauguration on the horizon, I wanted to pay tribute to the outgoing president, Mr. Barack Hussein Obama II.

president_barack_obama

Say what you will about the man and his policies, but at the end of the day he was a class act from his first day to his last and I will truly miss having him as Commander in Chief of the United States of America. So, in this very special Fangirl Moment post, I’m gonna break from my usual topics and bring you all something a bit more real….

Fangirl Moment: Sexy Anime Boyz

TGIF! Here we are again with another Fangirl Friday! This week I’m doing things a little differently. Usually I pick something I watched or read over the past week and I shine a spotlight on it, but this week I didn’t really watch or read anything… that is until this afternoon, when a dear friend of mine shared something so beautiful, so spectacularly wonderful that I just had to share it!! So this post is dedicated to my dear friend and fellow blogger, Leafy over at Leafさんの夢が。。。

hug.gif

It started innocently enough, two friends catching up, nothing out of the ordinary… and then Leaf showed me something magical! This single video spoke to my fangirl heart like no other video has done before… well, not since LeetStreet Boys’ Imaginary Boys…

I Date Hot Guys on My iPad: A Love Affair with Virtual Bishies

This post has been a work in progress for over a year, but I could never quite work out how write it out, until the other day when I went to play a game in my backlog and I actually groaned… can you believe that?!

Lately, I’ve been so caught up with all the schedules and reviews, that I’ve kind of lost sight of why I started this blog in the first place: because I love otome games and I want to share that love with the world. Ha ha, it sounds silly when I write it out like that, but it’s been a long time since I really, truly enjoyed playing a game. It’s gotten to be such a chore really, buying games, playing them, writing the reviews, editing… somewhere along the way, playing otome games became a routine… *shudders* it became work and that’s something I never wanted to happen! Sure there have been games that I genuinely liked playing, in fact I played a game the other day that brought back a little of that old spark, but the magic that I had when I first started playing otome games has been gone for a little while now.  So, it’s high time I reminded myself why I fell in love with otome games in the first place, before I wind up resenting them altogether.

Let me warn you guys now, this post is more for me than it is for you guys, I really needed to remember what it was that drew me to otoges. So this won’t be one of those pretty posts that I fuss over endlessly until the wording is just right and expect a lot of “…” so if you’re still with me, I want to write about how I got into otome games…

Fangirl Moment: Does the Flower Blossom?

Happy New Year and TGIF!! This is the first Friday of 2017 and with it comes a brand new Fangirl Moment post!! Since this is the first post of the new year and because I have quite a few new followers, I figured this would be a good time to explain what Fangirl Moment posts are:

Fangirl Moments are a part of a weekly post series where I cover a wide range of topics (books, movies, anime, manga, etc). These posts are relatively short (roughly 500 words), just a short snapshot about the topic of the week and are uploaded every Friday (give or take)… Previous Fangirl Moment posts can be found under the Fangirl Moments tab on the top menu, organized by type (or just click the tab for the master list).

So now that that’s out of the way… *ahem* I thought long and hard about what I wanted to cover this week and after much deliberation and many sleepless nights I decided to go with… Oh who am I kidding? I don’t really plan these posts out! 😛 This time around, I decided to go with a BL manga that I bought over the Christmas Break, Does the Flower Blossom? (Hana wa Saku ka) by Shoko Hidaka.

20170105_120836

I’m still waiting on my copy of volume 3…

Does the Flower Blossom? is a five volume slice of life boys love manga, that follows the budding relationship between a mature office worker and a young artist. This manga series is licensed in English by Juné, please support the author and purchase the volumes when they become available in your area!

A Year in Games: My Favorite Games of 2016

First, I’m baaaaack! Well, sort of… this is one of the two year end posts I told you all I’d be writing, I’m just posting it a day early since I’ll be on a plane back to DC on the 30th…

A little while ago, my dear friend Leafy asked me if I planned on doing a top games list for 2016 and at the time I gave her what I thought was a pretty solid, Nah… I’m terrible with lists and schedules so I go out of my way to avoid them when I can. But, as we got closer to the end of the year I found myself thinking about all the games I’d played throughout the year; the good, the bad, and the meh titles and before I knew it this post kind of wrote itself! So here I am, a few days before the start of a new year running through my favorite games of 2016…

Now, I will say this in advanced, not all of these games were released in 2016, most were, but there are a few titles that were released prior to this year… Also, I am not including the Voltage games I played (save Liar), because I plan on doing a separate list for that. Finally, before ya’ll start grabbing your torches and pitchforks because your favorite game isn’t on the list, or you don’t agree with my picks, remember this is my list, if you have suggestions feel free to tell me about them in the comments section (I am always open to game suggestions)! *claps hands* Let’s get this show on the road!!

My Top 10 Favorite Generation Five Pokemon

It’s been awhile, but I’m back again with yet another Top 10 Pokémon list! This time around, I’ll be covering my Top Ten Gen  5 Pokémon. So let’s get this party started…

unova

The fifth generation games renewed my love of the Pokémon series! Both Black and White and their sequels had a much more dramatic narrative than any of the previous Pokemon titles. In terms of storytelling, the fifth generation games were some of the best Pokemon games to date… excluding Pokémon Sun and Moon. However, I have to say that I was not a huge fan of all of the Pokemon introduced in these games… Out of the 156 new Pokémon introduced in Black and White, I really only liked a handful of them. In fact, my team in Black mostly consisted of Pokémon from previous generations, so this wasn’t an easy list to write. But, this was a much easier list to write that the Gen Four list, so silverlinings…

Fangirl Moment: Haikyuu Season 3

TGIF! Here we are again with another Fangirl Friday!! So this week I’m going to return to a series I covered in a previous Fangirl Moment post…. Haikyuu! If you’ve seen my twitter lately, you’ll know that one post was not enough for this amazing series!! So, I’m back with more volleyball induced fangirling with this week’s post about Haikyuu Season 3!

2016-12-12 (12).png

This pic shows the emotional stages I went through while watching season 3 of Haikyuu…

The entire ten episode season covered the final qualifying match for the Spring High Tournament, between Karasuno High and the current national champion team Shiratorizawa. I was literally on the edge of my seat throughout every episode, and the pay off was better than I could have ever dreamed!!

**This post will contain spoilers for Season 3 of Haikyuu, so read at your own risk!**

Fangirl Moment: Arthur

TGIF! Here we are again with another Fangirl Friday! This week I’m covering a TV show that I absolutely loved as a kid! I used to watch this show every single day, both before and after school, and a few days ago, I found myself binge watching the first few seasons on YouTube… I’m talking about the children’s show, Arthur!

I’m in my mid 20’s now, well outside of the show’s target demographic, but I still can’t help but love this inquisitive 8 year old aardvark and his friends in the fictional town of Elwood City!

Fangirl Moment: Dengeki Daisy

TGIF! Here we are again with another Fangirl Friday! This week I’m covering a manga by one of my absolute favorite mangaka. No, seriously, I have read just about everything by this author, but this is one of my favorites… I’m talking about the shoujo manga Dengeki Daisy by Kyousuke Motomi!

dengeki-daisy

Check out my awesome photography skills…

I have been periodically buying all of the volumes for this manga over the years and I’m just missing the last six volumes… That’s how much I love this series, I actually bought it! I don’t waste money on sub-par manga!

*Also, I am not done with this series, SO KEEP THE SPOILERS TO YOURSELVES! I’m serious!*

Fangirl Moment: Yuri!!! On Ice

TGIF! Here we are again with another Fangirl Friday! After cancelling last week’s FM post, I am back in full form, with a fun anime related Fangirl Moment write up. But, first I should probably explain what Fangirl Moments are, since I’ve gotten few new followers recently… *ahem* Fangirl Moment posts are short weekly posts that cover a wide range of subject matter (usually anime, manga, books, or films). I choose the topic at random and they always come out on Fridays, if you are curious about my previous FM posts, click HERE, for the Master list or use the top menu to view posts by topic!

So this week’s post is about an anime series that I’ve recently started watching, an anime series that has been the biggest ship tease I have ever seen… I’m talking about *drumroll* Yuri!!! On Ice…

yuri.jpg

So, I guess now would be the time to admit that when I first saw the announcement for this series a few months ago, I was actually planning on not watching it at all… In general, I’m not a huge fan of sports anime, with Haikyuu being the only exception, so when a friend from Line demanded I watch the series with her, I wasn’t very enthusiastic…

Fangirl Moment: Sherlock

TGIF! Here we are again with another Fangirl Friday! Okay so last week after I saw Doctor Strange, I found myself craving more Benedict Cumberbatch… so, I opened up Netflix and binge watched all three seasons of the BBC series, Sherlock. I’ve seen mixed reviews about the series; people either love it or they hate, so I really didn’t know what to expect from the show…

2016-11-10 (3).png

#RelationshipGoals

I didn’t expect to like this series as much as I did, but it only took me one episode and I was hooked! I’d be lying if I didn’t say Cumberbatch was the main reason I started watching the show, but the Martin Freeman’s facial expressions are what really kept me watching… I kid!
