Thrifty Gaming: Games That Won’t Blow Your Budget #61

Hey there Heroes, Travelers, and Wandering NPCs, I know I missed the last two Thursdays of posts let’s blame that on my leaking ceiling… but, it’s once again that special time of the week—Thrifty Thursday!

In a world where it’s all about the almighty dollar, sometimes it’s a little tough to make our pennies stretch enough to accommodate our hobbies. But, there are plenty of ways to balance your budget while still enjoying the things you love, you just have to be a little thrifty about it. So, I created Thrifty Gaming in order to spotlight some lesser known indie titles that are both entertaining an affordable.

If you’re a new follower or someone who has been following since my Nice Job Breaking It Hero days and have been gone for awhile, here’s a refresher… Thrifty Gaming, is a weekly post series where I spotlight three games/visual novels that are under $10.00. These can be mobile games, PC games, and a few times I have found some nice indie console titles too. The list used to focus on just otome games and romance visual novels, but after requests from a few readers I have since expanded to other gaming genres. I don’t include sales or limited time offers, each title has to be consistently priced at $10.00 or less without any promotions to be included in this line up.

Note, these are not reviews, rather recommendations so your mileage may vary with some of these titles. This week’s post will include a brief synopsis and links to each game so you can add them to your gaming library! You don’t have to break the bank to enjoy your hobbies, so save a little bread and check this week’s thrifty gaming picks!

Melanin Friendly Game – ‘Lake of Voices’

Hey there Blerdy Tribe, it’s Melanin Monday here on Blerdy Otome and that means I’m spotlighting another Melanin Friendly Game! For those of you just joining the party—every Monday I spotlight games that feature Black and brown characters for anyone looking for titles with just a bit more representation. As a blerd and a gamer, I am always on the lookout for representation in my games. This is largely a personal project for me—there are almost no “diverse game” tags on major game sites—so, it can be pretty difficult find games with characters of color… unless you already know where to look.

I skipped last week, but I’m back and I’m spotlighting a game I’ve covered before, but when you come across a game this good it doesn’t hurt to talk about it again! This week I’m covering the horror suspense visual novel Lake of Voices, developed by indie game studio GB Patch. The game follows guard for hire, Kikka, and her companion Belleme as they attempt to cross Sinnlos, a lake that’s home to gruesome monsters. The creatures that dwell beneath it’s murky depths have claimed the lives of many unfortunate travelers. In order to complete the journey, Kikka and her companion must rely on mysterious Guide if they have any chance of surviving the treacherous two day journey. However, they are not the only travelers hoping to cross Sinnlos, but with a larger group, the chances of survival are significantly decreased…

The Light at the End of the Ocean Game Review

I will admit that when the Jane Titor emailed me about her first commercial visual novel release, The Light at the End of the Ocean, I didn’t know what to expect. I was familiar enough with her blog, but I completely missed the fact that she was a game developer and had she not contacted me I might have missed out on a truly wonderful game—a sentiment I have expressed on more than one occasion.

The Light At The End Of The Ocean Review 1.png

In The Light at the End of the Ocean a young woman wakes up in a lighthouse with no memory of who she is or how she came to be there. The stoic lighthouse keeper informs her that she crashed her boat on the beach, but offers little else about the circumstances surrounding their meeting. The keeper does however, inform her that help will arrive soon and that she is free to explore the island in the meantime. But, the more the young woman learns about the island and it’s inhabitants, the more unsettling things become. What secrets does the island hold? Who is the mysterious lighthouse keeper? Will the young woman ever discover the truth?

Blerdy Otome Monthly Recap – July 2020

Hey there Blerdy Tribe, man has it been a crazy year… and yes, I am still working from home. Is it too late to just count 2020 as a loss and jump to 2021? July was a bit of a mixed bag for me since I spent most of the month dealing with an ongoing leak that caused severe damage to my ceiling. Which was just one more reason for me to find a new apartment and blessing of all blessings I was approved for a great new place and I’ll be out of this hell hole come September!!

There were of course some positives in July: I was invited to participate in a round-table discussion with fellow black creatives over on the Manga Mavericks’s podcast! I had a blast talking with some truly talented individuals and it was great swapping stories and just all around having a great time. (I’ll share the link when the episode goes live). I’m also one of three hosts in an upcoming podcast… but, the details of that are a bit hush hush for the time being, so stay tuned for that!

August brings with it more fun opportunities and the 5th Anniversary of this blog!! So, before we dive in to the new stuff, let’s take a bit to look back at the month of July here on Blerdy Otome!!
