Confessions of an Otome Gamer: It’s Okay NOT to Play the Latest Game

It’s been a while since my last Confession and that’s because I didn’t have anything I needed to get off my chest. But, it’s a new year and with it comes the promise of new game releases and the inevitable pull we as gamers feel to keep up with the latest trending game. FOMO is real and no one wants to be out of the loop. But it’s hard keeping up with new releases and it’s exhausting trying to keep up with everything.

Of course, today, the North American servers for Twisted Wonderland just opened and despite my already packed schedule and backlog there is an almost all consuming urge to jump on the bandwagon and play it. I knew the release was coming, and now that it’s here I’m excited but if I’m being honest I’m not chomping at the bit to play it right this second. But, the reviewer side of my brain is nagging me to play it with everyone else so I can draft up some content for my site, which trust me, been there done that and it absolutely did not “spark joy” in my life.

As a reviewer I almost have to be up to date on game releases and news in order to stay relevant, which is definitely at odds with my more casual approach to gaming—I like to take my time with games, dragging playthroughs out for months or more. The only exceptions I make are when a game is given to me specifically for a review, because there is an expectation that I should play the game and write about it before the release date (which sometimes doesn’t happen). So when it comes to other games, I like to take my time and go at my own pace.

I get it, not everyone is like me, a lot of folks dive into new games without any effort, blazing through them in a few days. And, I am in awe of those folks, but for me I’d much rather be late to the party than force myself to rush to a game. So I told myself that this year I wouldn’t force myself to play a game just for the sake of having content, but rather because I actually wanted to play it. Because, I want to enjoy gaming, this is a hobby not a chore and it’s okay to not always be in the thick of it with the rest of the fandom.

So, this Confession is for anyone burning themselves out trying to keep up with the latest release—It’s okay, you don’t have to play [insert game] right now, it’ll still be there when you’re ready. So just have fun!

  1. Love this! I’m currently playing Bustafellows to review on my page but it’s been taking me months to finish it due to being busy with work and everything. I felt guilty at first but then I realized that it’s fine. I should also enjoy the experience and not rush it you know?

      1. I’m currently a few scenes into Mozu’s route so I’m not too far from done I guess. I just have the attention span of a goldfish and get easily side tracked lmao. But I am definitely enjoying the game.

  2. Totally agree with you!
They’re even PSP games I haven’t played yet xD
Twisted Wonderland isn’t available here, so I won’t be playing. I’m fine with Tears of Themis only

    1. SAME! I still need to finish Norn9 and P4G… eventually lol Hopefully they’ll open up and release it in more territories soon
