5 Games Like Code Realize

It’s been a long time since I popped out one of these Games Like posts. Part of me wants to say the delay was brought on by real life obligations, but really I had a hard time thinking of games like Code Realize. I ran the twitter poll back in October, but this post has been sitting in my drafts these past few months because I wanted to pick games that really did Code Realize justice (and fingers crossed that I actually did that).

Last time I wrote a list of 5 Games Like Collar x Malice and this time around I’m bringing you guys a list of 5 games like Code Realize. For those of you unfamiliar with the game, Code Realize is a steampunk fantasy, featuring a cast of characters based on famous literary and historical figures. Code Realize was developed by Otomate for the PS Vita in 2014 and later released internationally in 2015. In the wake of the fall of the PS Vita, Code Realize has made the move to the Nintendo Switch. The game follows Cardia—a young woman whose body produces a deadly poison that melts anything she touches—spends her days in an abandoned mansion to protect others from her affliction. Labeled as a monster by the locals, Cardia resigns herself to a life of loneliness until Royal Guards break into the mansion and attempt to capture her. She is saved by infamous gentleman thief Arsène Lupin, who promises to help her find her father, the only person who might be able to remove the poison coursing through her veins.

Code Realize has been universally praised by otome fans for it’s immersive story and well developed characters. It’s definitely a stand out among otome game titles, managing to balance romance and good, solid storytelling. So if you’ve played Code Realize and you’re looking for something similar to dive into, here are five game titles that are sure to hit the spot! I tried to go with games that have the same feel as Code Realize and not so much a play by play clone of the game. So, they’re not exactly the same, but, they definitely capture the spirit of the game.

The House in Fata Morgana

Where to Play: Steam | Windows | Playstation 4 

So, right off the bat I want to clarify that technically The House in Fata Morgana isn’t an otome game, and while there are some “romance” themes, that isn’t the biggest draw of the series. In The House in Fata Morgana you step into the shoes of a person, amnesiac who awakes in a strange mansion, there they meet a Maid. She offers to help you regain your lost memories, by exploring the mansion’s past—the pair embarking on a journey through time to learn the truth behind the mansion and its former inhabitants.

I’m still working my way through the game, but like Code Realize, The House in Fata Morgana features an immersive and emotional story. This is hands down one of the best visual novels I have ever played, each of the game’s endings offers a unique and enriching experience that you don’t want to miss. The House in Fata Morgana really knows how to hit you in the feels—heavy on the tragedy—but totally worth the experience!

Destined Memories

Where to Play: Google Play| App Store

I will admit that I am usually not a fan of mobage, since I find them tedious and the reliance on wait times frustrating. So, your mileage may vary with this pick, depending on how much you enjoy free to play mobile games. But, despite my qualms about freemium games, Destined Memories does have a pretty interesting story. In the game you play as an acrobat in a world in the midst of a terrible war. But, dispute the chaos that surrounds you, your life is pretty peaceful, that is until soldiers arrive in your hometown. They attempt to capture you, but you are rescued by a trio of thieves who offer to help you uncover the truth behind your past and the reason the soldiers are after you.

On the surface the story is very similar to Code Realize—a young woman with an unknown past is being pursued by a shadowy organization only to be rescued by a group of “vagabonds” who promise to help her out of her situation if she joins them on an adventure—it’s even a steampunk fantasy. But, there are just enough changes here to make for a wholly unique experience; the characters are fun, the story is compelling, and it’s absolutely free!

Steam Prison

Where to Play: Windows, Mac, & Linux | Steam

Steam Prison is a game I have talked about a few times before and while it has its flaws, it is a pretty solid otome game title. It plays around with some great complex themes and ideas, which makes for a story with much more substance than the usual romance heavy narrative you find in most otome games. In the game you play as Cyrus Tistella, a young police officer living in the Heights, an elevated utopia. But, her comfortable life is turned upside-down when she is framed for the murder of her parents and banished to the Depths a place where the most brutal criminals are sent to atone for their crimes. But, when she arrives, Cyrus finds that the Depths is not the primitive wasteland she once believed it to be, she soon learns that all is not as it seems as the things she once held to be true start to fall apart.

While Steam Prison isn’t as flawless in its storytelling as Code Realize, the phenomenal world building and well developed cast of characters make for a unique gaming experience.

A Foretold Affair

Where to Play: Windows, Mac, & Linux | Steam

GB Patch is a developer that likes to switch things up with their titles, so you never quite know what to expect from their games and A Foretold Affair is definitely an experience. It’s a steampunk romance with a twist—you already know who your destined lover is, you just have to convince them that the two of you are meant to be. After getting a glimpsing their own future, Abnormal, Buffalo Seer, will leave home on a journey to locate their intended spouse! But, the road to the future they foresaw won’t be smooth sailing, with enemies all around, Buffalo Seer will have to keep their wits about them.

London Detective Mysteria

Where to Play:  PS Vita| Steam

London Detective Mysteria is a Victorian-era otome game that follows Lady Emily Whiteley, heir to House Whiteley, upon her debut into high society she receives a letter from the Queen of England inviting her to attend a famous detective finishing school, Harrington Academy. Explore London and investigate a series of mysteries, while interacting with characters inspired by famous historical and fictional figures, like, famed detective Sherlock Holmes, infamous serial killer Jack the Ripper, master thief Jean Lupin and more…

Lose yourself these great titles!!

Code Realize is hands down one of the best otome games to make it’s way stateside, and for good reason, with it’s compelling characters, gorgeous visuals, and immersive story, there’s a lot to love! So if you’re looking for another game to fill the void after finishing Code Realize (and it’s sequels and FD) you can’t go wrong with one of these fun titles.
