Betcha Can’t Read Just One: Reading FanFics is a Slippery Slope

Y’all ever hear that old Lays potato chip slogan, ‘Betcha can’t eat just one’? It was well before my time but, I find that it pretty accurately sums up my relationship with Fanfiction. No matter how hard I try, I can never seem to read just one.

It always starts the same way: I find a really good fic—usually KuroTsuki… but BakuDeku is growing on me too—I get really engrossed in the story. Like Sam I Am in Green Eggs and Ham, I read that fic all over the place—on the train to and from work, at my desk during my lunch break, between tasks, curled up in bed, hell, I even read while walking to the station in the morning. I binge the hell outta that fic! And then, like most good things, the fic ends and I’m left with this gaping void in my daily routine.

Withdrawal sets in as I long for the story and characters I have come to love… and sometimes I succumb and reread the fic once more just to capture a glimmer of the magic and wonder the fic once brought into my life… but soon that fades and like an addict I need my next fic.

Archive of Our Own
This is where it all starts…

I scour Archive Of Our Own in search of The Perfect Fic, hours of shifting through tags and cross referencing chapter length with the last update date… and then I find it: The One. The fic that will make me forget about my last great love… but soon it too ends and I am compelled to renew my search, chasing my next literary high.

I am not ashamed to admit that I’ve spent entire weeks doing nothing but reading fanfics. In fact, I pride myself in my appetite for fanfiction. However, I tend to get carried away and neglect other things… like sleep… and gaming… and dates…

So, I’ve learned to temper my urges, read in moderation. Limit my reading to my work commute and weekends and maybe the occasional after work evening. I’ve been good. I followed the rules and restored balance to my life…

And then…

Someone makes the mistake of asking me for fanfic suggestions, and that’s all it takes for me to slide back down the slippery slope into FanFic Hell…

I’m currently really into the BakuDeku ship right now, and I just finished reading As Fate Would Have It by  and A Mate’s Worth by , both really good omegaverse fics! So, if you know of any really good omegaverse stuff featuring BakuDeku or KuroTsuki send them my way, I’m due for another foray into FanFic Hell… and if you happen to find a nice long AsaNoya fic… send that too (there is a surprisingly small pool of fics featuring them as the main couple).

And of course, if you’re currently wallowing in FanFic Hell, def share your current reads with the rest of the class! We’re all in this together and sharing really is caring!!

Thank you for reading and supporting Blerdy Otome! If you like what you see be sure to drop a like or a comment to let me know what are some of your favorite fanfics.

  1. That fanfic pit is something serious. I get you sis cuz I’ve been there. Getting swepted away is easy when you get a good fic. I’ve dabbled one and off for years, I only really do naruto fanfic though.

    1. Yeah, it’s a slippery slope. One minute you’re reading one the next thing you know it’s midnight and you’re about 5 stories into AO3.

Oh! one of my IRL friends used to write SasuNaru fics.

Gush about cute otome boys~
