30 Day Haikyuu Challenge: Days 14- Favorite Friendship

Ah yeah, I’m still late with this post, but since I have a bit more to say about this topic, I’m not doing a double post today! Yay?! In my defense I have been reading Haikyuu fanfiction all week so it’s not like I was completely neglecting my love of the series…

haikyuu challenge

I had a hard time choosing what to write about for this prompt, since there are so many great friendships in this show. Hell, you could argue that the show focuses more on the bonds the characters share with one another than it does on volleyball…. but that would be preposterous. So, rather than picking one friendship, I picked three!!*Ahem* My favorite friendships in Haikyuu are….

*These are in no particular order, I love all of these friendships the same*

Before I get into this post, I have to say that it was damn near impossible to google these pairs without encountering either a steamy fanfic or some even steamier fan art. This isn’t a complaint, just an observation and a warning for all of you out there that are unfamiliar with the beautiful world of shipping (read: Hell)… So, about those pairings…

Kuroo and Bokuto

bros kuroo and bokuto.gif

This is the kind of bromance the minstrels of old would sing about in their songs! Okay, so I will admit that my love of Kuroo and Bokuto’s friendship is largely due to all of the Haikyuu fanfiction I have read in the past, which have more or less romanticized the relationship into this epic bromance that transcends all logic and reason… But, the fact remains that Kuroo and Bokuto are actually on really good terms with one another despite playing for different teams and even have a bit of a friendly rivalry going on.

But, what I love most about these two is just how chill they are, both Bokuto and Kuroo are captains of their respective teams and third years, but you wouldn’t know it by looking at them. They don’t put on airs or act like they are better than everyone else, they’re just a couple of teenagers that love volleyball and love having fun. Sure they can be a bit excitable and more than a little immature, but when Bokuto and Kuroo are around it’s bound to be a party!!  Also how could I talk about these two without mentioning their classic friend call… Oya? Oya, oya, oya!

Oikawa and Iwaizumi

bros iwa and oikawa.gif

Okay, so remember when I said that I couldn’t google these pairs without encountering steamy fanfics and fan art? Well, the biggest offenders were these two. I will admit that while I am partial to the Kuroo x Tsukki pairing, I do have a soft spot for IwaOi…. But, that has nothing to do with this post, so I’ll save the shipping talk for a future post…*Awkward laughter*

I had no profound reason for choosing these two for this list, I mean, it would be almost criminal, not to have them on this list! Why? Well, Iwaizumi and Oikawa are best friends and this isn’t some fan theory or something the tumblr fangirls have made up for their super steamy erotic fanfics… these two are honest to God BFFLs! They have known each other since they were children and spend most of their time together, both on and off the court. But, what I love the most about their relationship is how supportive they are of one another.

Oikawa can be an annoying prick sometimes, but despite his antics, Iwaizumi stands by him, even going so far as to giving him a bit of tough love when he gets out of hand. They really complement each other well, Oikawa is emotional and childish and Iwaizumi is grounded and a bit blunt, but it works!

Tsukishima and Yamaguchi

bros tsukki and yams.gif

Last, but not least, Yamaguchi and Tsukishima! I will admit that I am not a fan of the TsukiYama ship, in fact I go out of my way to pretend it doesn’t exist (I’m more of a KuroTsuki kinda gal), nothing against the ship, I just value the friendship between Tsukki and Yams more. Usually seen quietly judging everyone around them, it’s rare to see one without the other, especially in the first season, Tsukishima and Yamaguchi were practically joined at the hip!

So what’s so special about these two? Well, Tsukki is a bit of a dick who does his best to keep everyone at arms length, but the one person who doesn’t seem bothered by his snarky attitude and generally unpleasant nature is Yamaguchi. He is the only person that sees through Tsukki’s IDGAF attitude and accepts him for the lovable jerk that he is… Granted, even Yamaguchi has his limits, even going so far as to call Tsukki out on his BS, which oddly enough works. He is the only person that can yell at Tsukishima Kei and actually get him to pull that stick from up his butt. Now, if that isn’t true friendship, I don’t know what is!

Those are my bro picks, but there are so many other great friendships in Haikyuu that I didn’t mention, that’s where you guys come in!! What are your favorite friendships? Which characters do you think are the ultimate bros? Let me know what you think in the comments section! As always, if you like what you see like or subscribe and THANK YOU FOR READING!!

  1. Watching Haikyuu I really liked Tsukishima and Yamaguchi’s friendship as well. It was really sweet and kind of needed so that we didn’t all write Tsukishima off in season one as nothing but a jerk.

  2. Oikawa and Iwaizumi as well as Daichi and Sugawara has all my support!
Well, so does Kuroo and Kenma, but then again, I like everything in Haikyuu!! so….
