Fangirl Moment: Stranger Things

TGIF! Here we are again with another Fangirl Friday! This week I’m covering a show that has recently been blowing up my various social media timelines and dashboards. Today’s post is about the insanely addictive Netflix original series, Stranger Things!

For weeks, everyone that I knew would rave about what a great show this was and how I just had to watch it… So a week or two ago, my bf and I hunkered down and watched the entire series on Netflix! We watched all eight episodes, which given our hectic schedules, too a few days to coordinate. But, oh my gosh, I get it now! I totally see what all the hype was about and I can’t wait for season 2!!

So what is Stranger Things? Well, Stranger Things is a 2016 supernatural mystery Netflix original series, starring Winona Ryder and Millie Bobby Brown. The series takes place in the 1980’s in a small town in Indiana and borrows several science fiction themes from the era.

“When Joyce’s 12-year-old son, Will, goes missing, she launches a terrifying investigation into his disappearance with local authorities. As they search for answers, they unravel a series of extraordinary mysteries involving secret government experiments, unnerving supernatural forces, and a very unusual little girl.”

I don’t know what it was about this show, maybe it was the supernatural/mystery element or maybe it was the cast, but I fell in love with this show from the first episode. I haven’t been this hooked on a series since Game of Thrones!! After finishing the first episode, I was just bursting with questions, like: What’s happening? What’s with the lab? Oh my gosh, is that kid dead?

So, hungry for answers, I quickly clicked to watch the next episode delving more deeply into the mystery of the series. The cast was great, and I was especially impressed with the child actors, this was some of the best child acting I’ve seen in a long time. But, I guess that’s because they were acting their ages, which made their performances that much more believable.

The story is good and all of the twists and turns will keep you guessing until the very last episode! This is a character heavy series with a plot that always manages to surprise you. We see the events unfold through the eyes of the characters. I especially love that we get to experience the majority of the story through the eyes of a group of children, which gives the show a nostalgic edge.

The characters are fun and retain just enough realism to make them relatable without being too preachy or stereotypical. The show isn’t without it’s flaws, namely with how Lucas is treated by the other guys in the main group. He really gets the short end of the stick and I for one was not okay with how easily he gets dismissed halfway through the series. The story at times is a little predictable, but nothing that takes away from the enjoyment of the show. I actually recommend watching the show if you have the time, there’s something for everyone here!!
