It’s not uncommon for people to grow attached to anime characters. In most cases we spend a lot of time watching these guys on screen, so it makes sense that we’d grow attached to them. So when an anime character dies, it’s only natural that you feel sad about it….
If I’m being completely honest with you guys, there are actually two anime deaths that I consider to be the saddest anime deaths ever. So, instead of going through the trouble of picking one over the other, I’m just going to share both of them! My picks for saddest anime deaths are…
Jiraiya’s Death from Naruto
So first up is Jiraiya… When this character was first introduced in the series, I never thought I would ever get so attached to him such a lecherous pervert. But, as the series progressed and I learned more about him and his outstanding accomplishments, Jiraiya became one of my favorite Naruto characters. So, I was devastated when he died alone at the hands of his former pupil, Pain! I actually teared up during this scene… it was just so heartbreaking…
Maes Hughes’s Death from Full Metal Alchemist
I know I mentioned this scene during my Day 12 post, so I won’t write much here… but this is by far one of the saddest anime deaths ever! Hughes was such a fun and well liked character, and he did not deserve to die alone in a phone booth like he did. The only consolation is that Roy Mustang gets his revenge on Envy in one of the most epic anime fight scenes ever!

Oh my goodness, Jiraiya’s death. I was so scared when he was fighting Pain. I was fearing the worst, and I can’t believe he actually died. Then Kakashi died. Then he came back. Heh.
Maes Hughes is also a good classic pick for saddest, though the part that actually made me cry was his daughter asking everyone what they were doing to her dad. So sad!
My vote will go to a character who died in One Piece. I won’t say who because despite the fact that you won’t watch it, I still couldn’t dare spoil it. All I’ll say is very very few people actually die in the show (besides flashbacks) so this particular death was even more tragic and unexpected,
I am still hurt by the fact that they could bring everyone else back to life, but Jiraiya had to stay dead!

There is only one death that I know about in One Piece… and from what I heard it is a doosy…

Hughes death is incredibly sad. I think though that it’s more sad because of the impact on his family and friends rather than the fact that he died. We don’t really know all that much about Hughes other than his obsession with his daughter and his friendship with Mustang, so it’s more the toll his death takes on the characters who survive that packs the emotional punch.

Ahhhh they’re both so heartbreaking. But if I had to chose between the two, I found Jiraiya’s death the saddest.
Yeah I feel you Jiraiya’s death broke my heart… and then to add insult to injury, they were able to revive just about everyone else that had died EXCEPT Jiraiya!
I KNOW because his body was in the ocean T-T, at least the bad guys couldn’t use him against Naruto and the others. Though in all honesty, the bit that made me finally cry after holding back tears was when Naruto found out and was remembering memories of Jiraiya. But it’s just so sad that Jiraiya isn’t able to see what happens after.
I know the characters reactions to death are always heartbreaking! But it was so much worse with Naruto. He’d already lost so much and for him to lose another person was just too much to handle!

She’s not exactly dead but she might as well be; my choice is Nina Tucker. Hughes was super sad but at least he was an adult who had a life. He also chose to be in the military which, let’s face it, is dangerous job. But Nina was just a child who had not experienced life much and had no choice in anything. 🙁

I think these are pretty good choices – both deaths were prefaced pretty well within their respective narratives and I think its interesting in a melancholy way that at the time of both their deaths both characters were desperately trying to get out a message that was integral to defeating their enemy. Entertaining parallel between your choices there.

I actually didn’t realize the similarities between these scenes, awesome observation skills.
I remember Jiraiya’s death when reading the manga, very sad death of a very beloved character. It’s sad that when a character becomes a mentor, they often have a death flag waving over their head for the sake of the protag’s character development.
I don’t want to reveal too much, but around the ending of season 1, there was a character who died that…. definitely gave me pangs of sadness. The voice acting was so strong as a reaction, I was so impressed during that scene.

Shin Sekai Yori made me cry multiples times because of deaths, and Code Geass was another that wrecked me because of deaths. It’s why I refuse to rewatch them (⌒_⌒;)
Hughes death was really saddening, as was Jiraya’s, and Nina Tucker indeed. FMA is such a gutwrenching anime, tho I haven’t finished the original nor Brotherhood, I saw enough to know (^_^;)
I don’t think I ever watched shin sekai yori… but I totally agree Code Geass is one of those series that I can only watch once lol

The Hughes funeral was so sad. Even beefy Armstrong teared up during that part with Maes’ daughter.
Those are sad picks. Jiraiya was one of my favorite characters and seeing killed was unbearable. Maes death was worse. He should have stayed alive for his daughter. I hated envy.
