I’m not going to lie this was a tough one for me because I don’t really pay much attention to the animation. At least not enough to discern bad animation from good animation. So when I read this prompt I was at a loss for which anime to select…
What makes this choice even harder, is that the prompt is kind of vague. Do I choose an anime with the best overall animation or one that animates certain scenes really well? In the end, I gave up on being technical about it and just picked an anime. I saw this anime a little while ago, but I remember really liking the animation… large noses aside. So, my pick for the anime with the best animation is…
I ended up picking the 2006-2007 supernatural anime series Red Garden. Say what you will about the plot, which I will admit, is not as well developed as I would have liked considering the premise. But the animation style, now that is a different story… The character designs for Red Garden are gorgeous, which for many reviewers is the one saving grace of the series. Since the show takes place in New York City, the animators went the extra mile to make the characters look more realistic than your average anime characters. The animators put a lot of detail into the individual character expressions, which works well with conveying the emotional aspects of the story. My only real complaint were the noses, which the animators went out of their way to make larger than normal (I guess to make everyone look more American).
But what I really loved about Red Garden were the individual character designs and the clothing! I’ve never been so jealous of an anime character’s wardrobe in my life! The characters in this show look like they have been plucked straight out of a teen fashion magazine. Each girl’s clothing tells their story and the subtle changes in their fashion choice reflect their character’s growth over the course of the series. Rachel is the fashionista of the group so her wardrobe is the most versatile, with a mix of styles which serve as a direct foil to Claire’s which is more practical and tomboyish wardrobe. Then there’s Kate, with her posh, tailored clothing and Rose with her cute doll like clothes to round out the group. I am well aware that the animation was not as consistent as I would have liked, but the clothes… those were always on point!

I’ve never heard of Red Garden. Do you have any scene in mind that’s an example of the animation at its best, or is it much more subtle than that? For my pick, I can’t decide!! I’d be inclined to say Kara no Kyoukai, Paprika, and Grave of the Fireflies. KnK’s effects are stunning, Paprika excelled in fluid surreal imagery, and Grave of the Fireflies captured reality extremely well.

I love Paprika! It was such an interesting film.I agree the way the animators transition between the surreal and the everyday was perfect! Grave of the fireflies is a one way trip to tear station… I missed most of the animation because I was crying so hard lol
I haven’t heard of Red Garden either, but it looks very different, just based on the screenshots and your description. I’ll have to see what it looks like in action.
A recent anime that had amazing animation was One Punch Man! Every fight looks so fist-pumpingly awesome! The animation is so fluid and seamless. Nothing feels cheap, and it seems like it was animated with love. If you haven’t seen it, I recommend you check it out either online or starting on Toonami this weekend.

I honestly don’t notice animation unless it is particularly bad or doing something a bit different. I do remember I loved how Maka was animated in Soul Eater (particularly in some of her fight sequences) but I would hardly argue that Soul Eater consistently has good animation.

I think I consider good animation if it means it did suspense well and dynamic camera work. Daiya and Haikyuu are good examples, as is Evangelion/Rahxephon/Escaflowne, of anime’s delivering impact through camera work~
