Have you ever seen an anime that was so bad that it was good? Those bottom of the barrel anime series that no matter how cliched or how stupid, you just can’t stop watching. The kind of anime you watch alone in the dark with the shutters drawn shut…
Over the years I have seen my fair share of anime, some good and some… I just don’t talk about. So without further ado, for the Day 5 prompt… my pick for an anime that I am ashamed that I liked is….
I watched this before I knew what a harem anime was… so I went into this show with absolutely no expectations or biases. I saw this back when I was new to anime so I didn’t know I was supposed to dislike it, and even now that I do know better, I can’t help but find the whole thing cute.
In Maburaho individuals with magical abilities are born with a set spell count, which is predetermined at birth. If a person reaches their spell count, regardless of their age or health status, they die. So, individuals with high spell counts are usually afforded a higher status than individuals with low spell counts. However, a person’s spell count has absolutely no bearings on magical ability, but it usually pans out that individuals with higher counts are more powerful.
That’s not the case for Kazuki Shikimori, his family is known for creating some of the most powerful magicians, but poor Kazuki has the unfortunate misfortune of having a low spell count. His spell count is so low that he ranks at the bottom of his class at Aoi Academy, a prestigious school for magicians. However this doesn’t stop him for being sought after by three of the hottest girls in school. Over the course of the series, each girl tries to win Kazuki’s affections in an effort to get a piece of his pedigree DNA, and one day give birth to powerful magical offspring. First up is Yuna, transfer student that seems to be a past acquaintance of Kazuki’s (even though he doesn’t remember her), she seems to genuinely care about Kazuki, even going so far as to declare herself his future wife. Next is Kuriko, the hottest girl in school, she’s only interested in Kazuki for his genes. She spends a majority of the series trying to seduce her way into Kazuki’s pants, but as the series progresses she too falls in love with him. Last up is Rin, a young woman from a prestigious magical family, who is under orders to secure Kazuki’s magical genes in order to replenish her family’s dwindling magical lineage.
I don’t know what to say, I usually dislike harem anime like Maburaho, but for some reason I couldn’t help but watch it week after week. There was something endearing about the series that made it stand out from other harem anime series. Maybe I kept watching to see which of the three girls Kazuki would end up with. Maybe it was because the story was something I’d never seen before. I have no idea what to tell you, I just really liked this show, as cliched and predictable as it was, Maburaho is a decent anime series.

I’ve never seen that anime, but I’ve heard a bit about it
I haven’t seen Maburaho, but I’ve heard of it. Most of the anime I enjoy but am ashamed of are the numerous harem shows I used to watch when I was younger. Perhaps the stupidest one was Sister Princess, in which a boy had a harem of 12 sisters. I don’t remember the details, but I don’t think there was actually incest… Anyway, it was pretty bad, but I watched it and liked it when I was younger, so there… Haha…
Lol harem anime tend to be most people’s guilty pleasures. I’ve never heard about Sister Princess…hmmm I may have to look it up, maybe not watch it though lol

Hahahah this post is funny.
Tbh I highly recommend The World God Only Knows. It’s about a guy named Keima who’s this sarcastic dude who only likes 2d women rofl and obsessively plays otome games. (Well the ones for guys but I don’t think they’re the eroge kind) and he ends up getting contracted by demons to “conquer” real women which he can’t imagine doing rofl. It was honestly very good and I usually stay the hell away from harem shows like this but it was really good. The last episode especially was emotional.
My Lil bro told me about this one, I just never got around to watching it lol. Maybe now I’ll give it a shot

Asobi ni Iku yo is one of my favorite guilty pleasures. A harem anime about a race of alien catgirls coming to Earth to play and do stuff. It’s as atrocious as it sounds, but for whatever reason, I find it charming.

ahaha Maburaho I remember watching this show it was of first harem animes I had ever seen. Wasn’t sure how to take it all in back then oh my god lol One show I shamefully liked a lot was strawberry panic considering it was my first yuri ever I just loved it 😀 I have no shame no more !!!!

I’m desperately trying to remember an anime I’m ashamed of liking, but I can’t even recall which ones I like. I guess that’s the downside after watching anime for a decade (and more than 500 of them). I totally didn’t look through my list of completed anime either. But maybe Chuu-Bra!! or Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko? Okay, maybe not, I barely remember any of them. Mahoraba maybe? Though, again, I barely remember it. Let’s just come to the conclusion I’m not ashamed of anything I watched and that I really must have liked a lot of non-memorable anime.

Well harem shows can be very funny at first. People generally get sick of the genre however as each show just seems to repeat the same gags and plot devices.
Yeah, exactly! Plus from what I’ve seen the protagonists rarely choose one girl at the end… which is frustrating after watching x episodes of back and forth between the protag and his harem

I tend not to feel that ashamed of anything I like, and anything I SHOULD be a little self-conscious about watching I tend to think is average at best. The closest thing I can think of is KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World, purely because I know it’s a polarising series and I can see why some people don’t like it. But I found it not only funny, but strangely compelling!
