30 Day Anime Challenge-Day 3: My Favorite Male Anime Character

Okay so unlike the prompt for Day 2, the choice for Day 3 was a no brainer! The minute I read the prompt, this character immediately popped into my head. He is the epitome of cool, from the slick way he walks and talks to the way he handles his ship, this guy is a BAMF! One minute he’s kicking ass and taking names, the next he’s causing massive amounts of property damage. This guy is a boss!

like a boss

This character is one of my all time favorite anime characters, and I don’t see anyone else taking his place anytime soon. He lives life by his own rules, as he crosses the galaxy in search of his next bounty. He hates kids, animals, and women with attitudes… So 3…2…1…Let’s jam, My favorite male anime character is…

Spike-eat

Yup, my favorite male anime character is Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop, the bounty hunter with a flair all his own. For those who don’t know, Spike is the protagonist of the 1998 anime series Cowboy Bebop…if you haven’t already seen the series what rock have you been living under? go watch it now, you are really missing out on an amazing series… Spike Spiegel is a 20-something green haired Martian bounty hunter. He along with his partner, Jet Black travel the stars on the Bebop in search of criminals, vagabonds, and their next meal ticket.

Before he became a bounty hunter, Spike was a member of a crime syndicate with his reputation on the up and up. But, that all changed when he fell in love with his partners girl and tried to elope with her. Of course when his partner found out about the affair, he was none too  pleased, so he attempted to have Spike killed. The lovers escape and go their separate ways, not long after Spike pairs up with ex-cop Jet and the two become bounty hunters.

It’s kind of hard to write exactly what it is that makes Spike my favorite male character, maybe it’s his tragic past, maybe it’s his laid back attitude, or maybe it’s because he’s rather easy on the eyes. Spike is such a complicated character, he doesn’t fit into a specific category like most characters, his motivations change based on the situation. He marches to the beat of his own drum, which often leads to more trouble for him in the long run. While he isn’t really driven by any established moral code, he does make sure to always repay his personal obligations. Unlike most protagonists that I have encountered in other anime that I’ve seen throughout the years, Spike doesn’t have some big character altering experience (at least not during the course of the series). He remains roughly the same from the first episode, Asteroid Blues all the way until his final scene in The Real Funk Blues part II… and I can appreciate that.

What do you think of my choice? Who is your favorite male anime character? Feel free to let me know in the comments section! As always THANK YOU for reading!!!

  1. You can never go wrong with a character voiced by Steven J Blum. Still one of the saddest character deaths ever.

    See ya, Space Cowboy. ;-;

  2. I love Spike. He’s too cool, and I absolutely love his English voice actor, Steven Blum. My favorite character is a continuation of my favorite anime: Light from Death Note. I know he’s not the most likable character, nor is he particularly “good.” But that’s what I love about his conniving nature. He’s deliciously evil, and I can’t get enough of him. He was also the very first character I ever cosplayed as so there’s some significance for me there.

    1. Thank you for sharing! It’s funny that you say Light is your favorite, because I was more of an L fan. But I agree Light had his epic moments…for a villain lol

      1. I love both of them, but something about Light’s love for revealing secrets, thinking multiple steps ahead, and making THE LOOK is just so delicious for me. Kinda almost reminds me of myself. But don’t worry… I’m not evil…

      2. Hmmm…not evil you say… I feel like we all have a little Light in us, it’s just that we never get the chance to let it out

      3. I may share some of Light’s other traits of trickery and deceitfulness, but I try to use them for purposes other than evil, haha.

      1. Plus I loved his American and Japanese voice actors <3 That doesn't happen a lot for me. Same with the rest of the cast.

Gush about cute otome boys~
