I absolutely love Pokemon, it has been the mainstay in my life and one of the few things to stand the test of time. Pokemon is a huge nostalgia trip for me. So in honor of the 20th Anniversary of Pokemon, I will be releasing a Top 10 Favorite Pokemon list for each generation of Pokemon.
So lets channel my inner child as we travel through time back to the Kanto region! Back then, there were only 150 Pokemon, and for this list I’m going to choose just 10 of them. Each Pokemon on this list holds a special place in my heart!
Number Ten: Dewgong
Dewgong was one of the few ice type Pokémon available in the first generation. But, to be honest I like this guy for purely aesthetic reasons. Dugongs (the animal), which this Pokémon is based on, are typically referred to as mermaids. Dewgong is the embodiment of majesty and playfulness.
Number Nine: Eevee
This Pokemon is one of the cutest Pokemon ever, you just want to give it a big squeeze! Eevee is the Pokémon of limitless potential, thanks to all of the different Eeveelutions. It is capable, either with the use of evolution stones or based on certain conditions, of evolving and changing its type. Darwin would be proud of this Pokémon!
Number Eight: Butterfree
This was one of the first Pokémon I ever fully evolved. It was there with me from the beginning as a tiny Caterpie to an almost useless Metapod and then, after time and grinding, it evolved into a beautiful Butterfree! But, you can’t talk about Butterfree without mentioning the episode of the anime where Ash released his precious Pokémon so that it could be with its true love! One of the saddest moments in Pokémon history!
Number Seven: Ninetales
Vulpix is cute, but Ninetales is the picture of grace! There is nothing more perfect than a fire fox, it has a subtle and ancient charm. It is described as being and intelligent and vengeful Pokémon, said to curse those that mistreat it! Ninetales is like a vengeful old world god, especially since it is known to live for 1,000 years. This is not a Pokémon you want to cross.
Number Six: Dragonair
After all the trouble I went through to catch a Dratini in the Safari Zone, this Pokemon better be on this list! This Pokemon, along with Dragonite is a badge of honor, not only because of it’s Dragon typing, but because of all the work it took to get it! The design is elegant and sleek, the epitome of grace and regality that one would expect of a Dragon type Pokemon.
Number Five: Arcanine
Arcanine looks like it would make a great pet. Fierce and playful, this Pokemon looks like it could kickass in battle, but still enjoys a nice belly rub. Plus, it has really great design, like a mix between a dog and a lion, but with only with all the good parts. Loyal, fast, and brave, Arcanine is everything a trainer could ask for in a Pokemon!
Number Four: Gengar
This Pokemon scared the crap out of me as a child… Gengar was truly a thing of nightmares. Part shadow, part ghost Gengar is definitely a force to be reckoned with especially in battle! But I realized after seeing it in the anime that the poor guy is just misunderstood. Gengar is just a trickster who wants to be loved!
Number Three: Sandshrew
Sandshrew was the first and only Pokemon card I ever had (my mom wouldn’t buy the cards for me), and from that moment it was love at first sight. I love it for no other reason than its cute, just look into its beady black eyes and tell me its not adorable…go on…I’ll wait…
Number Two: Pidgeot
Pidgeot has a kick ass design, it is simply majestic with its long flowing head plumage to its keen eyes (see what I did there)… Then don’t get me started on Ash’s Pidgeot from the anime…I still tear up thinking about it…This is one of the few Pokemon that was made more badass by mega-evolution, simply gorgeous.
Number One: Wartotle
Typically I gravitate towards Fire type Pokemon, but in Gen I, my absolute favorite Pokemon is the scrappy Wartotle. There is just something about this little guy that appealed to me as a child…It just looks like the kind of Pokemon that never gives up, something about the eyes says, “I’m gonna win this battle or die trying!”

My Kadabra/Alakazam just ripped through everything. It takes a lot of work to catch those sneaky Abra, but what a boss it is when leveled up.
I know right! Trying to catch Abra was such a pain, so I usually just gave up on them lol!
Cool list. If I made a top ten I would include Ditto.
Ditto is also a super useful pokemon! I usually leave my dittos in the daycare center and forget about them, so they wind up being really high levels.
I find it really hard to make ranked lists of this type, but I’d definitely big up Gyarados and Zapdos. The former because it’s a total boss if you have the patience to get it (and teaches dilligent training) and the latter because it was one of my most prized Pokemon cards and I remember taking it all the way to the Elite Four.
For some reason I always think of Gyarados as a second gen pokemon (because of the red one at Lake Rage). But, I totally agree, have enough patients to grind with Magikarp, Gyarados is a welcome reward. Zapdos is also a pretty awesome Pokemon!
I never really used ol’ Gyary until the red one too, but I always make sure to grab one now. Z’Gok is a vital part of my Nuzlocke team at the moment. Also trying to train one on Platinum to deal with Celia’s goddamned Garchomp…
